Round 1: Y L S T I E U S P

C1: PULSES (6)
C2: SUITES (6)
DC: TISSUEY (7) STIPULES (8)
Score: 6–6 (max 8)
STIPULES are small leaf-like appendages to a leaf.
Round 2: R J T A I E R L M

C1: TRAILER (7)
C2: TRAILER (7)
DC: MALTIER (7)
OT: RETIRAL (7) RETRIAL (7)

Round 4: N F N E O E D C I

C1: CONNED (6)
C2: CONFINED (8)
Score: 13–27 (max 30)
Elliott bags a baseball cap for a good spot with this Darren, to take an early double-digit lead against Charlie.

Round 5: 3, 6, 7, 1, 8, 25. Target: 494.

C1: 494. ((7x3)-1)=20x25=500-6 (10)
C2: 494. ((7x3)-1)=20x25=500-6 (10)
Score: 23–37 (max 40)

Amanda relates a tale of mixing up the words cheveux and chevaux when trying to make excuses to a swarthy French estate agent, for not going for a drink with him on ‘A Place In The Sun’. She finished up telling him that she was washing her horses rather than her hair in her very basic French.

Teatime teaser: FLATTOES -> FALSETTO

Round 6: Y S T O E A D F W

C1: STEADY (6)
C2: STEADY (6)
DC: WAFTED (6) WASTED (6)
OT: DEFATS (6) FASTED (6) SAFETY (6) STAYED (6) STOWED (6) SWAYED (6) SWEATY (6) TODAYS (6)
Score: 29–43 (max 46)
A very flat round to help Elliott maintain his lead

Round 7: P G P R I A O T G

C1: TAPIR (5)
C2: GROAT (5)
DC: GATOR (5)
OT: AGITPROP (8)
Score: 34–48 (max 54)
AGITPROP is political propaganda in art or literature, but I reckon that it is also a nasty forward in Rugby Union

Round 8: S N T U E A D N A

C1: STUNNED (7)
C2: STUNNED (7)
DC: ANDANTES (8)
Score: 41–55 (max 62)

Round 9: C X Z S E U O M H

C1: MOUSE (5)
C2: HOUSE (5)
DC: MUCHO (5)
OT: CHEMO (5) CHOSE (5) OCHES (5) CHUMS (5) COMES (5) COXES (5) HOCUS (5) HOMES (5) MECHS (5) MOUES (5) MUXES (5) SCHMO (5)
Score: 46–60 (max 67)
Yet another flat round and Elliott must be feeling very hopeful.

Susie tells us the origins of some astrological words, including comet, planet, etc.

Round 10: 5, 1, 4, 8, 1, 50. Target: 354.

C1: 354. ((8-1)x50)=350+4 (10)
C2: 354. ((8-1)x50)=350+4 (10)
Score: 56–70 (max 77)

Teatime teaser: AGUNFALL -> LANGLAUF
A dodgy TT, leaving all but the German speakers bemused.

Round 11: B P T O I A S O R

C1: RAPIST (6)
C2: RATIOS (6)
DC: PASTOR (6) ABORTS (6)
OT: PROBITS (7)
Score: 62–76 (max 84)

Round 12: T L R E A O W D N

C1: DOWNRATE (8)
C2: TRAWLED (7)
DC: LEOTARD (7) LEADWORT (8)
OT: DANEWORT (8)
Score: 70–76 (max 92)
An excellent spot by Charlie, to get him right back in the match.

Round 13: N S K I A E D N L

C1: KINDLES (7)
C2: SKINNED (7)
DC: ANNELIDS (8) KNAIDELS (8)
ANNELIDS are segmented worms and KNAIDELS are a type of Jewish dumpling. I must admit that I am rather partial to nice dumplings, Jewish or otherwise.

Score: 77–83 (max 100)

Round 14: 2, 3, 1, 4, 3, 75. Target: 886.

C1: 886. (3x4)x(75-1)=888-2 (10)
C2: 891.
Score: 87–83 (max 110)
Charlie makes a good solution (the same as mine :D ) to put him in front just before the line.

Round 15: N I M B L E R I G

C1 buzzes on 16 seconds to say LIMBERING which is correct.
Score: 97–83 (max 120)
Charlie gets the Conundrum to finish Elliott off, in a very good game that could have gone either way.
Elliott could easily have won a game or two against weaker opponents.
Charlie is making very good progress and he could go all the way with a bit of luck, as he is a good solid all-rounder.
