Maybe she was confused with TEAM, in which there is (I've heard) no I.

Obviously another container ship bound for 3rd world famine relief has hit the rocks near Westward Ho! and the cargo has been washed onshore, much to the delight of native Devonians, who are proudly wearing their haul for all to see.

Somewhat simpler 2nd numbers: (100 - 10 - 3) x 9

Couple of DC beaters:

Round 9 - CUBAGES.
Round 12 - MELODIST.

In Fell Corner, I missed DIALECT/DELTAIC/CITADEL/EDICTAL in round 2 - frustrating.

Also what was with the challenger loving his 3 vowels? In round 6 a final vowel produced SCORELINE (in fact CSREOILN out of the first 8 + 4 of the 5 vowels produces a nine) and then in round 8 a final vowel would have produced DELATIONS (in fact TDNOEALS only takes two letters to make 9s, both of which are vowels. Bonus points for anyone who can guess the final vowel).

Good start. Clearly not I as that was mentioned - DELATIONS.

Extra points if people can tell me what vowels (without cheating) can be added to NCSIEOLR to make a 9 (I've given you E for SCORELINE already).

RECLUSION/INCLOSURE LONICERAS/CENSORIAL COLONISER can't get I

Excellent. Can't get I, you're correct.

Only puzzle left then is DELTANOS + I is DELATIONS, what is the only other add to DELTANOS.

It pissed me off a bit too, I came here to say the extact same thing.
In Rd 6 I was looking for A, E or U sore LONICERAS, SCORELINE and INCLOSURE (Dunno which the 4th vowel was). Then in Rd 8, I was looking for I or O for DELATIONS or LOADSTONE.

Its not the contestants fault for not being able to spot these words and calculate that its best to pick a vowel, but just annoying that on the last letter, he could have easily picked either both times, and he ended up picking the less favourable one each time.

It *is* in the contestant bumf that picking 4 vowels will maximise the chance of a long word.

Yeah, but if they are against a better opponent, it is good tactics to keep the selections flat so they have less chance of being beaten.

I agree. I'm not sure this was the tactics of today's challenger though.

Maybe he wasn't bothered about tactics....maybe he just fancied joining in with a show he enjoys. It does happen, you know! :o
