ESCORTING is one of those words that you wouldn’t unravel at first sight unless you’re a seasoned anagrammer. You would very easily fall for the ‘sectoring’ trap, and businesses occasionally talk about ‘business sectoring’. The permutations don’t really make you stop and think they don’t look right. Thought the challenger was a bit unlucky personally.
It’s like the classic ‘elations’ = TOENAILS and ‘Pilates’ = TALIPES pitfalls.

I got it as soon as the last letter was laid down (i.e. before clock started). Normally I'm terrible at words beginning with vowels.Philip A wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 3:00 pm ESCORTING is one of those words that you wouldn’t unravel at first sight unless you’re a seasoned anagrammer. Likewise, but TBF words beginning with vowels other than U in the prefix -UN are quite tricky to unravel.John Garcia wrote: ↑Tue Sep 30, 2025 8:18 pmI got it as soon as the last letter was laid down (i.e. before clock started). A selection like L E H N T A E S P makes you go for words like STAPLE, PLANETS, or even HEPTANES… and after the round you kick yourself in missing an everyday 9 because you don’t normally think of words beginning with A, E, I or O (or U if not an UN- word).
The conundrum wasn’t easy either because of that annoying vowel beginning.

This was a horrible game from the champion geezer. After some good games previously he was lucky to get away with this. Hopefully he'll be back on form next time!
