Apterous Summer Open 2010 Week 4
This week we had a brace of contestants who unfortunately had to withdraw, and one other unplayed game:
Adam Gillard* forfeit loss vs. Ben Wilson
*Since this is Adam's second no-show, I've taken his card out of the deck for future weeks.
Also, this is the last full week for the pool play in the U1400 -- next week will be one game and any needed tiebreakers. In order to make these tiebreakers happen, please please please be prompt in getting this week's games done; use PM here or e-mail via apterous to schedule these games. Everyone has been scheduled (at this point) for at least seven games by the end of the week.
The pairings for week 4 then look like this:
The Open
The U1400
The U1200
The U1000

Open Result: Henry Meier 2 - 0 Karen Pearson
Henry 102 - 74 Karen
Henry 83 - 76 Karen
The score in the first game is extremely flattering to me, it was a far closer game than that result suggests. Game 2's is far more reflective of what were two closely fought, very enjoyable games which could have gone either way.

Re: Apterous Summer Open 2010 Week 4
Kirk won 2-0 with a spread of 3 points
Game 1: Dinos 103 - 105 Kirk
Both players had a 13-max game. It's not often you see yourself 16-0 up on Mr Bevan and unfortunately the lead didn't last as missing DIASTASE meant Kirk could creep past me on the conundrum
Game 2: Dinos 95 - 96 Kirk
Here I astonishingly found myself 15 points ahead despite being pushed to risk the invalid squawed^ and not agent nounifying REMIXES to REMIXERS. I then got my gelatos^ mixed up with my LEGATOS and then Kirk stole the conundrum again
The moral of the story? Kirk iz good.

I got a bit lucky earlier on with HOODIAS (I lost in the AWC thanks to missing it, so it's quite fresh in my mind), and there were some really nasty selections (round 8 particularly - I only got VOGUES after about 28s, having had *nothing* up until then).

Richard Priest 94-83 James Doohan
I was a bit nervous for this, knowing James was no slouch. He was very unlucky mistyping the 9 in game 1 which must have been a big psychological blow for him.A couple of misses in game 2 that I was annoyed with, but overall I'm quite pleased with how I played.Unlucky James.

U1400 Lloyd Pettet 81 - 88 Michael Wallace
Really awesome game this. I took an early lead only to have it destroyed by Lloyd's spots of ANCHORED and SPACIAL (which I'd seen, but dismissed as SPATIAL...), only to get back into contention before the first numbers, which I managed to take to have a modest lead at the end of the first half. Drawn letters games allowed me to take a risk with 6 small on the second numbers which paid off taking me to a 15 point lead. I then managed my trademark miss of an easy 9 to go behind again, but we both spotted the darrenical PRUINOSE to keep the lead at just 3 going into the last numbers. I debated for a bit but decided to play it 'safe' with 1 large, duly setting up a crucial conundrum which I managed to unscramble in a not particularly impressive 9.6s.
Quite an exciting game, I thought.

Open Division Week 4:
James and I both made a couple of mistakes of judgement in our fixture. I played well (for me, anyway) but couldn't capitalise in crucial rounds, and James was solid enough to see himself to a 2-0 victory.

Edward McCullagh 2-0 Scott Gillies
Edward McCullagh 112 - 101 Scott Gillies
Quality game - 13 maxes each, but I edge it on the crucial.
Edward McCullagh 102 - 86 Scott Gillies
This game was not as great quality, but way more gripping. I fluffed NUMERABLE and pick remunable × instead in round 4. Then Scott goes and spots RODGERSIA in round 9 giving him a 19 point lead! Scott: "I came in my pants when I saw that"
Down and out and with 5 rounds to go, I manage to get ESCROWING in round 11 to make it a one-point game, and follow it up with GAUDIES in the next round to give me the lead for the first time. Then it goes to another crucial and I FOREARMED my way to victory.
Two very good games that could have gone either way.

Kai Laddiman vs Chris Philpot
Kai Laddiman 84 - 86 Christopher Philpot
An epic tussle starting with me thinking KETOGEN^ is in, for no apparent reason, and then great spots of AVIARY and SURMISED ensured Chris the victory before the conundrum.
Kai Laddiman 117 - 74 Chris Philpotoftea
Chris unfortunately melted down slightly in the second third, allowing me to get AVIARIES (which I wouldn't have spotted if it wasn't for his spotting AVIARY in Game 1) and a 9 to pull ahead, but the game was closer than it looked. Also missed 2 lovely nines.

Kai Laddiman 102 - 58 Crispy
A disappointing game in terms of quality, but Chris was really unlucky to fall in to the POUNCER^ trap (and no doubt get pounced upon). I liked BOBMEN^, possible JimDic omission?
Anyway, final score Kai Laddiman 2 - 1 Chris Philpot
After the decider we had a game of chessboxing. He got me in Fool's Mate seconds before I flattened him. Then the ref arrived and our game started. (He won.)

Jon O'Neill 100 - 117 Dale Levell
Crucial conundrum this time. I was about half a second behind which is really frustrating after 15 seconds. We both got ABNEGATOR too.
Good games both though, Dale a deserved winner.

Apterous Summer Open 2010 Week 4
Result from Open Week 4:
Marcus Hares 2 - 0 Jim Bentley

Marcus 100 - 69 Jim http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=273878
A personal best score for me in the 1st game which yielded multiple 9's.
A century was not on the cards in the 2nd game at the start as both of us struggled - it improved halfway through, I was very lucky to catch Jim on an off-day, good luck in the next round Jim

Not sure that this is the best posting place for it but for my next round in the open (R5) I am on holiday until Friday 23rd. I will be able to play my game on the Friday evening or the weekend. Hope this doesn't inconvenience my future opponent.

Game 1: Ryan Taylor 94 - 104 David O'Donnell
Not a bad game to start us off (apart from the appalling conundrum).
Game 2:Ryan Taylor 110 - 90 David O'Donnell
My first ever victory over David (including those playing from home against him on TV) came as a result of me spotting a 9 with David missing it. A spot of CONNOTES eased me towards the end.
Game 3:Ryan Taylor 109-99
Lightning struck twice as I won this one on a tie breaker. A 9 was on hand again before David spotted SAMANGO and HEREUNTO to go 10 clear. On the last numbers game still with his 10 point lead he solved it but hadn't clicked it in the box so really it should have been 109-99 going into the conundrum rather than 99-99. The first one passed us by (despite me looking at -MAN). Then with David buzzing early with a 10 I was tempted to buzz with STIGMAING but after a bit of time GIGANTISM eventually surfaced in my head from all those conundrums I did in that marathon.
Good games, but I did feel a shit after winning that last one after the numbers fiasco.

I think I've checked records for missing games, but if you want to double-check that I've gotten your games entered correctly (or at all!), you should go to the tournament website and look at the summary page for the section(s) you are in. Each of the section pages has a grid with results (either game or match) -- all your games should be in the row with your name in it. This is especially important for people in the U1400, and super especially important if your name is "Dan Seasmith", "Lloyd Pettet", or "Niall Seymour".

Liam beat me on a TB last night 74-84 after a pretty good comeback by me. thought he would have posted it tbh. Still no sign of mr dent, can we extend this until next week for his sake.

Sorry, intended to post this and the result of my Open match against Niall together, but then Niall disappeared halfway through the second game.

Apologies to those waiting to play me. Haven't time to pm everyone right now, and will be pretty busy until Wednesday, but i should be able to play anytime wed until 6pm Thursday, so shoot me a desired time if it suits and i'll make sure to be on. I might get a couple of chances to pop in tomorrow but it'll be brief and not sure when yet.

Phil Makepeace has made no appearances on the forum or Apterous for a few weeks.
He hasn't responded to either my pm or my Aptomail either.

Shit. I'm completely sorry. Phil Facebook'd me last weekend and asked me to pass on that he is still fucked for Internet, and has to sadly withdraw from the tourny, sending profuse apologies to all involved.James Robinson wrote:Phil Makepeace has made no appearances on the forum or Apterous for a few weeks.

I was busy when I skim-read it and totally let it pass me by, so I certainly shoulder some of the blame for the torment that his pulling out has caused (uurrghhh).
