Post by Kai Laddiman »

Countdown recap for Monday 6 July 2009. And I hope you've got some fresh pants on.

R06: S S D E A I F T E
R07: P B R I E T I N O
R08: H R D A E O M P E
R09: I O A N L G C N J
R10: 50, 3, 9, 10, 1, 8. Target: 918.

R14: 100, 7, 3, 10, 2, 6. Target: 665.
R15: M A L A R K I E S (conundrum)

With Innis one win away from octochampionismisticness (the first one of the series), can our challenger (who has been on before in Series 20, under the name Amey Deshpande*) stop him? He looks pretty good tbh.

*Made ya look :P

And now a brief interlude before our main feature:

Enjoy the (possibly pant-wetting) show.

Round 1: U A I P T N E N L

C1: PETUNIA (7)
C2: PLANET (6)
DC: PINNATE (7)
OT: ANNULET (7) NUPTIAL (7) PANTILE (7) PINNULE (7)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

A good start for Innis with a classic word. Yeh.

Round 2: V F R A O E S L O

C1: LOAFERS (7)
C2: foulers
OT: AEROSOL (7) ROSEOLA (7)
Score: 14–0 (max 14)

Innis pulls further ahead with another good word.

Round 3: W R X E A M E T O

C1: EXTREMA (7)
C2: WATER (5)
Score: 21–0 (max 21)

This time it's a brilliant darren leaving Chris stranded on 0. We're edging closer to celebration...

Round 4: C D N I O U R C A

C1: AROUND (6)
C2: DRAIN (5)
DC: CANDOUR (7)
OT: DRACONIC (8)
Score: 27–0 (max 29)

And Chris still yet to score! When will this Hazelic performance end?

Round 5: 75, 100, 10, 5, 3, 2. Target: 196.

C1: 196. (100 - 2) x (5 - 3) (10)
C2: 196. 100 + 75 + (5 + 2) x 3 (10)
Score: 37–10 (max 39)

Maybe now with Innis' 'classic' selection yielding an easy round. Yawn.

Donal (on his DC debut) told us an amusing little anecdote about something.

Teatime teaser: MOONSIDE -> DOMINOES

Round 6: S S D E A I F T E

C1: STEADIES (8)
C2: DEFEATS (7)
OT: SAFETIES (8)
Score: 45–10 (max 47)

If you wana know what safeties are, go look it up :P

Round 7: P B R I E T I N O

C1: POINTIER (8)
C2: POINTIER (8)
Score: 53–18 (max 55)

Both contestants get the darren. RIPIENO as a nice 7 tho.

Round 8: H R D A E O M P E

C1: HAMPERED (8)
C2: HAMPERED (8)
Score: 61–26 (max 63)

...And again.

Round 9: I O A N L G C N J

C1: LANCING (7)
C2: CLONING (7)
DC: CAJOLING (8)
Score: 68–33 (max 71)

Innis is getting worse - he's a whole 3 points behind the max :o

OoW: Susie talks about the origin of 'muscle' (pointing to Donal's - I think she's attracted :P ).

Round 10: 50, 3, 9, 10, 1, 8. Target: 918.

C1: 918. (50 + 1) x (10 + 8) (10)
C2: 918. (50 + 1) x (10 + 8) (10)
Score: 78–43 (max 81)

Teatime teaser: NEATHELP -> ELEPHANT

Round 11: N R T I O E Z T A

C1: NOTARIZE (8)
C2: NATTER (6)
OT: TENTORIA (8)
Score: 86–43 (max 89)

A great spot and Innis' score is double his opponent's. Another century and octochampionship get closer...

Round 12: G Y I A S D I I T

C1: DIGITS (6)
C2: DIGITS (6)
Score: 92–49 (max 95)

An easy(ish) max, and Innis is almost on 3 digits.

Round 13: D M R A E S U T E

C1: MASTERED (8)
C2: MASTERED (8)
DC: MEASURED (8)
OT: DEMUREST (8) MUSTERED (8) STREAMED (8)
Score: 100–57 (max 103)

BAM! Innis gets the century he thoroughly deserved and a place in the Hall of Octochamps (near me :D ). Now all that remains is to see what the margin is...

Round 14: 100, 7, 3, 10, 2, 6. Target: 665.

C1: 665. (100 + 10) x 6 + 2 + 3 (10)
C2: 665. (100 + 10) x 6 + 2 + 3 (10)
Score: 110–67 (max 113)

Another stupidly easy numbers game brings Innis a conundrum away from his highest score. And he's got all of them so far. Let's hope it's not a stupid one.

Round 15: M A L A R K I E S

No one buzzes. The answer was SAILMAKER.
Score: 110–67 (max 123)

Yup. A stupid one. Even the audience (AFAIK the first time they've been asked this series) didn't get it. But Kirk did.

Anyway, a worthy octochamp, Innis does his best Bevan impression after winning, and rightly so. He played brilliantly throughout his run, and a total of 861 points (average score 108) is not to be argued with. But we still have plenty of aptotalent on our screens coming up, including Hulme on Thursday. Enjoy!

Recaps Unltd. is an anagram of "curdle pants". Coincidence? I think we should be told.

Brilliant recap Kai.

Wow, what a bitch of a conundrum to stop him getting 8/8. I wonder if that was deliberate.

Congratulations, a brilliant octochamp run, Innis! :)

I'm still catching up on recent episodes on 4OD after my June holiday with my children in Wales - S4C having such strange scheduling.

I know that it's early days in the series, but I doubt that you'll be ousted from number 1 seed for the finals any time soon. 8-)

Commiserations to Chris, surely a teapot-winner against a more average player.

A great recap, Kai. :)

It's not that strange, unless you mean S4C...
