Friday 30th January 2009 (CoC XIII Final)
After 14 days (or just 3 days if you were in the studio) of some truly nail-biting games, we have now come to the final of the CoC XII, which incidentally may be the last CoC as well. Our two finalists are as follows:
Charlie Reams - Charlie's first game was against Series 58 semi-finalist Peter Davies, where Charlie's spots included PETUNIA, FLAMINGO, AMNIOTE and DESOLATE, to secure him the win. Charlie's QF was aginst Series 59 winner Junaid Mubeen, where Charlie gained an early lead, after spotting CRAZIES and after Junaid brought the score to within 3 points after the seconds number, Charlie spotted BUNGEE and the game eventually went to a crucial conundrum. The conundrum SALESGIRL went unsolved by both champions and Charlie won. Charlie's SF was against series 54 semi-finalist Jon Corby. After the first half, the scores were even, but two 8's (WHISTLED and DOLOMITE) gave Charlie a 16 point lead, from which Jon never came back from. At the end of the match Jon hugged Charlie.
Steve Briers - Steve's first game was against Series 59 Finalist Debbi Flack and after one round secured an 18-0 lead with ANTIPODES. Steve's spot of the conundrum MANGANESE after 25 seconds brought his total to 121, being the higest score so far of the CoC. Steve's QF was against Series 58 winner David O'Donnell, where David tied with Steve for the first 7 rounds, but then a spot by Steve in round 8 of PESTICIDE secured him the lead and the win. His SF was against Series 56 winner Nick Wainwright, where Steve spotted OARFISH, CURABLE and LAZARET to get a 5-point lead over Nick, after a bit of see-sawing game, going into the conundrum. The conundrum VARIFOCAL went unsolved by both champions and Steve secured his place in the Final.

Wait - there's more. In the introduction bit, you do a long piece on a "Steve Briers" but if you look at the contestant list underneath, C1 is a "Charlie Reams" and C2 is a "Steven Briers" so I can't find a match.Howard Somerset wrote:Very minor. 9 + 1 should read 9 - 1.Joseph Bolas wrote:Round 5: 100, 8, 4, 3, 1, 9. Re: Friday 30th January 2009 (CoC XIII Final)
I've finally caught up and watched the final at last.
Congratulations to Steve and commiserations to Charlie. Our hero pipped at the post in a final again.
Great game with some excellent spots.
I got OT contestant equallers, but not maxes, of RAILMEN in round 4 and ONLIEST in round 11.
Shame the numbers rounds were so tricky, it didn't help Charlie there. I was one away on all 3, but sat at home, yada yada....
Let's hope there is another C of C sometime, so Charlie gets another chance.
Sorry, Steve, to sound so one-sided in my support, but we all feel we know Charlie so well!
You did brilliantly, Steve, an excellent win.
