Congratulations America!
Congratulations to (all) the American forum member(s) - not sure if Jason is the only one.
I hadn't said anything before, as it's not my place as a Brit to try to influence US voting, but it's fantastic that Obama will be the next president!
Following 'dubya', he can't help but look great, but let's hope he lives up to his supporters' expectations too.

Well said Julie - I think we all breathe a huge sigh of relief, whether American or not.Julie T wrote:Congratulations to (all) the American forum member(s) - not sure if Jason is the only one.

Great news indeed. Hopefully he can get some good stuff done before public cynicism returns to its usual state.

Shouldn't this be in the spoilers forum? I've been busy recently and taped all the run up and the election night coverage. I've thrown the tapes away now.

Who was it that said "Americans always do the right thing in the end, after trying everything else first"?
I wonder what the odds are on Obama's being assassinated before completing his first term?

Just as long as he begins his first term...John Douglas wrote:Who was it that said "Americans always do the right thing in the end, after trying everything else first"?

Ostensibly Churchill, but it's probably apocryphal, like all Churchill quotes.John Douglas wrote:Who was it that said "Americans always do the right thing in the end, after trying everything else first"?

Re: Congratulations America!
We know, Gavin.
But, we shouldn't make judgments about that, just like we shouldn't make judgments if Craig Charles is named the new host of Countdown.

I think that Gavin was trying to be funny, Jason, very trying!
Maybe forgetting that Civil Rights has a more difficult history in the US than the UK, so is a rather more touchy subject.

True, Jason. I think they just reckon that Craig Charles wouldn't have the right personality for a Countdown host.Jason Larsen wrote:We are all equal!
As Ben demostrated, though, it might be fun to give it a try.

Re: Congratulations America!
Joke I saw on another forum, I thought you might like:
One sunny day in 2009, an old man approached the White House from across
Pennsylvania Ave, where he'd been sitting on a park bench. He spoke to
the
US Marine standing guard and said, "I would like to go in and meet with
President Bush."
The Marine looked at the man and said, "Sir, Mr. Bush is no longer
president and no longer resides here."
The old man said, "Okay" and walked away.
The following day, the same man approached the White House and said to
the
same Marine, "I would like to go in and meet with President Bush."
The Marine again told the man, "Sir, as I said yesterday, Mr. Bush is no
longer president and no longer resides here."
The man thanked him and, again just walked away
The third day, the same man approached the White House and spoke to the
very same US Marine, saying "I would like to go in and meet with
President
Bush."
The Marine, understandably agitated at this point, looked at the man and
said, "Sir, this is the third day in a row you have been here asking to
speak to Mr. Bush. I've told you already that Mr. Bush is no longer the
president and no longer resides here. Don't you understand?"
The old man looked at the Marine and said, "Oh, I understand. I just
love
hearing it."
The Marine snapped to attention, saluted, and said, "See you tomorrow,
Sir."
