Cryptic Crossword #4
Here is the fourth cryptic crossword and again it is with a theme.
Download the grid from here and PM me your solutions (or attempts) by Sunday 17th April 2011 and I'll post the answers soon after on that Sunday (around midnight).

Answers
OK so you can download the solution from here.
People who completed the clues and pretty much managed a reasonable enough explanation of the link were: Phil Reynolds, Chris Hare, Bob De Caux, Matt Bayfield, Matt and Heather and Graeme Cole whilst Innis got them all and provided the fullest of explanations, but then again I was only after the link.
Thanks for taking the time to do this.

Cheers Ryan. I'm determined to finish at least one of these. The clues anyway, not worried so much about the link.

What's the bracketed indication meant to be for 33A? It seems to have fallen off.

Divvytits. I could pull our completed one out of the recycling bin and scan it and then import the Word document I made to cover the connection if you want.
Also, shit on you for not keeping me updated with your PC solution via PM. Part-time friend. But yeah, sucks. Bring laptop down with you if you can and I'll see if I can help.

It wasn't so much the fact I didn't keep you updated because I hadn't made any action on trying to remove the virus and ironically was going to attempt it today. Then that's when everything just fucked up. The thing does not start up, it now has the CleanThis virus scam which is literally the only thing on the screen. Task manager, starting in safe mode, pressing F2 and F12 on start up, inserting a disc to just wipe everything. I've tried all them but with no success. It is genuinely fucked but I will lug it down to Landan with me if you want to have a look. I think you will pronounce it DOA though!Matt Morrison wrote:Divvytits. Added: And don't worry about the crossword, I will be able to do it and post it up sometime early next week.

Answers are now posted in the OP. I came home from the pub quiz last night to find that my brother had spent some time fixing what I thought was an irreparable laptop.

Well, I completed the clues pretty quickly, but I'm glad I submitted my answers straight away without waiting to see if I could get the link as I'd never have spotted it in a (lunar) month of Sundays. Brilliant! Thanks Ryan - I enjoyed it.Ryan Taylor wrote:People who completed the clues and pretty much managed a reasonable enough explanation of the link were: Phil Reynolds [...]
Some of the clues were a bit dodgy (Gruyere isn't the Swiss cheese with holes, ginger is a spice not a herb etc) but it was always pretty obvious what you meant. The one I'm still baffled by is 31 across - 27 is MONTH, so why "half of 27"?

Cool, thanks Phil. I can add that Phil had it done within like half an hour or something daft like that! I thought Gruyere cheese does have holes and that ginger is a herb though Apologies there if I was wrong...need to double check myself a bit. And the half I was meaning take half of LUNAR MONTH so take the MONTH part and then the clue becomes MONTH might. But then I suppose because I split it, I shot myself in the foot there! Eek! Will try harder though on the fifth one which will be posted up straight after my recap of today's show.Phil Reynolds wrote:Well, I completed the clues pretty quickly, but I'm glad I submitted my answers straight away without waiting to see if I could get the link as I'd never have spotted it in a (lunar) month of Sundays. Good news all round, you don't have to worry or buy a new laptop, I don't have to fix it when we should be playing HexRyan Taylor wrote:I came home from the pub quiz last night to find that my brother had spent some time fixing what I thought was an irreparable laptop.
Possibly meant to just be "27 might" without the "half of" prefix? I solved it fine at the time without even thinking, but now you point it out...!Phil Reynolds wrote:The one I'm still baffled by is 31 across - 27 is MONTH, so why "half of 27"?

By the way, only Bob noticed that I hadn't clued the WHEEL part of ROULETTE WHEEL unless you were all just too chicken to tell me I'd made yet another booboo? Either way, the fact that you still managed to do it all with some dodgy clues means you are all cleverer than you ever imagined!

I just checked the answers now and noticed it. I didn't get the answer first time around though. Red Black Green is thirteen letters, same as the answer. I thought it was an anagram of those.Ryan Taylor wrote:By the way, only Bob noticed that I hadn't clued the WHEEL part of ROULETTE WHEEL unless you were all just too chicken to tell me I'd made yet another booboo? The answer to 27 is "lunar month" so half of that is month.Matt Morrison wrote:Possibly meant to just be "27 might" without the "half of" prefix? No - the answer to 27 is MONTH. The LUNAR part is the answer to 9.Mark James wrote:The answer to 27 is "lunar month"
