Dog Eat Dog Tournament May-June 2011 - apply here
Registration for this tournament is now closed. Applications henceforth will not count, but you may still be charged. If you have any questions/comments please let me know. Here are the details:
Tourney name.......Dog Eat Dog
Dictionary.............English
Variant..................Dogfight
Format..................Dogfight Letters Attack
Start date..............1 May 2011
End date...............6 June 2011
Matches................Best of 1 (preliminary rounds); QF and SF best of 3; Final best of 5.
Notes....................Straight knockout. Limited to 32 entrants.
Provisional dates.. R32: 1-8 May; R16: 8-21 May; QF: 21-30 May; SF: 30 May - 5 June; Final: 6 June. All matches up to and including SF stage will be decided by random draw.
NB: The Dogfight variant is that used in the daily "Top Dog" games, i.e. Round 1 lasts 45s and the amount of time per round gradually decreases with each subsequent round. Hence, Dogfight Letters Attack is essentially the same as Normal Letters Attack, but with variable length of rounds rather than 30s per round.
No-shows: If a match is not completed within the allotted time period for a given round, the match will be adjudicated at the discretion of the tournament director (me). Edit: "Tourney Owl" games will only be used for adjudication as a last resort; I'd much rather people actually play each other. I would suggest that you do not play against the Tourney Owl unless you are certain that you will not be able to arrange a time to play your opponent. If both players have played against the Tourney Owl and subsequently have the opportunity to play each other properly, they should do so, and the result of the proper game will determine the winner.
There will be some flexibility in the dates, especially in the final stages of the tournament, but there should be plenty of time to complete matches (e.g. each of the first 2 rounds are spread over 2 weeks). If all of the matches of a round are completed significantly before the provisional date for the following round, I may bring forward the next round to an earlier date. You may withdraw from the tournament at any time should you so wish.
Fiddly unlikely scenarios: Should the scores be tied after 20 rounds, games will not be decided by tiebreak conundrum(s) (although these may be played at the discretion of the contestants in order to complete the game so that it disappears). Instead, a "sudden death" custom game should be set up with the following parameters: Full custom... > [Time per round] 3 seconds; [Variant] Dogfight; [Scoring] Winners; [Dictionary] English; [Rounds] Letters attack. In this "sudden death" game, the match is completed as soon as a player's score exceeds their opponent's score (the player in the lead is declared the winner). Any remaining rounds in the 20 round game may be played for the sake of completion at the discretion of the contestants. If the scores remain tied throughout the 20 rounds, then the "sudden death" custom game should be played repeatedly until a (win) result is achieved.
Guaranteed entrants:
1. Innis Carson (Champion)
2. Joseph Krol
3. Ben Wilson
4. Mark James
5. Kai Laddiman
6. James Bradley
7. Edward McCullagh
8. Rhys Benjamin
9. James Nguyen
10. Ian Dent
11. James Robinson
12. Oliver Garner
13. Jamie French
14. Ian Volante
15. Marcus Hares
16. Brendan Duke
17. Scott Gillies (runner-up)
18. Dan Abrey
19. James Levison
20. James Hall
21. Ryan Taylor
22. Thomas Carey
23. Kirk Bevins
24. Ned Pendleton
25. Chris Hare
26. Hugh Binnie
27. Graeme Cole
28. Dave Mattingly
29. Nick Deller
30. Thomas Cappleman
31. Liam Tiernan
32. Jim Bentley
Red indicates that a player has been eliminated from the tournament.

OK; although I never really had any beef with you, just at the time when I signed up to apterous you seemed to be the embodiment of inanity. Now this is much more widespread and I'm not going to hurry to block anyone else (you're unblocked).Ian Dent wrote:I'm in as a truce.

Well I'll make sure everyone is reminded closer to the time. I didn't want this to clash with all the other tournaments going on at the moment.

Yeah that'll be fine; I don't realistically think R128 is going to happen anyway, but I still intend to start the tournament on 1 May, however many participants there are, so I'll make an exception for your match.Nick Deller wrote:In please, but if I have an R128 match, I'd not be able to play it until 16th May because of holidays. Re: Dog Eat Dog Tournament May-June 2011 - apply here
Seeing as there's only a week or so left to apply and there are currently 31 entrants, I'm going to limit this tournament to 32 entrants because it's not likely to reach 64 and 32 is a good number to work with. So that means one more guaranteed entry. Beyond that there will be the option to join a waiting list in lieu of any withdrawals before or during the first round. I'll update the tournament information in the original post accordingly.

Jim Bentley 129 - 96 Graeme Cole
We weren't sure whether were supposed to start at 45 seconds or use the default of 30, so we left it at the default. Might be worth clarifying which is correct for the purpose of future games.

It should be 45 seconds per round to start with; the games will automatically be set up with the correct parameters once the tournament is actually scheduled to start, which is 1 May (tomorrow). I wasn't expecting you keenos to start already...

do we have to replay?Adam Gillard wrote:It should be 45 seconds per round to start with; the games will automatically be set up with the correct parameters once the tournament is actually scheduled to start, which is 1 May (tomorrow). I wasn't expecting you keenos to start already...

Btw I'm fine with if we have to replay because we only did 30 second rounds in ours and I didn't realise the tournament hadn't officially sarted yet.Joseph Krol wrote:do we have to replay?Adam Gillard wrote:It should be 45 seconds per round to start with; the games will automatically be set up with the correct parameters once the tournament is actually scheduled to start, which is 1 May (tomorrow). I'm cool either way, I'll replay if Graeme wants to.

Heh, I just thought this one didn't use the tournament system for some reason.Adam Gillard wrote:It should be 45 seconds per round to start with; the games will automatically be set up with the correct parameters once the tournament is actually scheduled to start, which is 1 May (tomorrow). I don't think it's fair on Jim for us to replay it though - we did agree that we'd play the match as-is when I pointed out the timing discrepancy, so as far as I'm concerned it was a fair match and Jim won it.

Ryan & Joseph / Jim & Graeme; I haven't entered your games into the tournament system at this time because I'd like you to PM me with either "as is" if you want the result to be carried forward or "redo" if you want to do the match again with the proper 45 seconds per round set up. If there is not a unanimous decision within a pairing, then I'll use a random draw to decide whether that match should be played again or should stand as is. I can't really think of a fairer way of doing it. If you agree, then that should be fair; if you don't then it's down to chance whether the match is replayed.

Jim and Graeme: your result stands, so Jim progresses to the next round. I'm just waiting for Joseph's response in order to adjudicate the other match.

I'll just do what Ryan says (which I think is to replay).

OK. Your match has been entered in the tournament system and the previous result is void with respect to this tournament.Joseph Krol wrote:I'll just do what Ryan says (which I think is to replay).

Just as an addition on this, I have some internet access where I am (I tried a quick ascension this morning and it coped with that) but it's flaky and it would be risky to play a tourney game with it. James, I should be highly available from 16 May onwards, so if you'd like to suggest a time to play asap afterwards, I'll fit in with you.Adam Gillard wrote:The random draw for the first round (R32) has been completed. *Nick Deller has been given an extended deadline to play his first round match, therefore I will be flexible with the deadline for Fixture P. Other R32 fixtures must be finished by the end of 14 May or else.
