Also used to like the one where you dropped the glow in the dark skull down the tower which set of booby traps, can't remember what it was called. Ghost House or something like that.

Ah, Ghost Castle looks much more like the one I had. I guess they made a second/better version of it or something? Either way it was awesomefun.

Just had my first ever game of Settlers of Catan. I have to agree it's an excellent game. Definitely up there with Carcassonne.

Has anyone got any confirmation on the reported Scrabble rule change of proper nouns being allowed? If it happens I can't imagine what all the competitive scrabblers would do/say/blow up in protest.

It's just a variant that was released last year, not for use in proper tournaments. Otherwise everyone would be naming their dogs 'qivvyao' and 'cuxporg'.

I've played a few "geeky" board games recently, including Settlers of Catan. I've only played it twice but I don't actually think Settlers of Catan is that good. I mean, I'm sure there's lots of skill and everything, but I just don't think it's that fun. Having played a few other games as well, it's quite a generic "collect wood, stone, clay and wheat and buy things that give you victory points" type of game. There seem to be a lot of them about, and I don't necessarily think Settlers of Catan is one of the better ones.

I've been playing The Resistance quite a lot recently, and despite its simplicity (or because of it), I think it's really good. Also Medici is good, and Abyss, Wits and Wagers, and Camel Up.

I still don't really see the appeal of Settlers of Catan.

Settlers is great, but moved in to a few other ones recently:
Carcasson, Puerto Rico (both like Catan to a certain extent)
Dead of Winter (cooperative Zombie board game)
Pandemic (another cooperative game)

I quite like Dead of Winter and Pandemic as well actually. Interestingly the sequel to Pandemic is the number one game on BoardGameGeek. I've never played it though.

I had another game of Settlers of Catan yesterday, and actually I was probably a bit harsh on it. It is quite enjoyable. It's still a resource management game though, but I think it's better than most because it's not overly complex and boring like a lot of them.

The world Scrabble Championship is in Nottingham this year ( was originally meant to be Doha )
It is from the 22nd to the 27th of August and anyone can enter it is only £100 to enter.
Could be tempted if I can find a cheap hostel/guesthouse.

Off to the Scrabble World Championship in Nottingham.
Needless to say it is an open event.

Had a thoroughly good time at the World Scrabble Championships.
I came 66th (out of 77).
Couldn't believe the standard of Scrabble from all the kids from Pakistan, their word knowledge was phenomenal, probably because Scrabble is on the National Curriculum in Pakistan.
My only claim to fame was I beat the woman who beat Nigel Richards, the No1 seed and I think the World champion elect.

The world championship is an open event and it only gets 77 participants?

There were several reasons why that was the case.
It was switched to Nottingham from Qatar at short notice meaning a lot of players, particularly from Africa and Asia could not obtain visas also the BMSC is taking place this weekend and many people had already booked.
It would have been much less if the dozen or so World Youth Scrabble participants from Pakistan hadn't stayed for the main event.
Also not ONE player the UK entered the youth event.

Anybody ever played starfarers of catan? It's like settlers only with aliens and spaceships and so forth. It's getting re-released in the autumn so worth picking up for any settlers fans.
