Annedown LVII and I was absolutely bed-ridden when this episode was broadcast.

And my recap of this was interrupted by my PCR test kit arriving, which needed to be sent off quickly pronto today.

Countdown recap for Thursday 16 Unknown month '09' 2021.

C1: Champion Mike Lee (2 wins, 209 points.) Apterite "who has two greyhounds when he can remember".

Round 1: L R D T A E A D E

Mike: RELATED (7)
Ryan: RELATED (7)
DC: TREADLED (8) TREADED (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 8, jos 8)
Darren-o-meter: 1/1 (100%)

Both contestants start off on seven, with Susie getting the darren.

Round 2: N F Y S I I O E R

Mike: SENIOR (6)
Ryan: NOISIER (7)
DC: IONISER (7)
OT: RESINIFY (8)
Score: 7–14 (max 16, jos 15)
Darren-o-meter: 2/2 (100%)

Ryan takes an early lead with Susie not getting a max today.

Round 3: 25, 8, 4, 9, 4, 2. Target: 336.

Mike: 336. (not written down) (9 × 4 + 4 + 2) × 8 (10)
Ryan: 336. (8 + 4) × 25 + 9 × 4 (10)
Score: 17–24 (max 26, jos 25)

A good LNAFP from Mike but Ryan equals him with the "normal" way.

Teatime teaser: FISHMICE -> MISCHIEF

Round 4: M T G R E U A E O

Mike: OUTRAGE (7)
Ryan: OUTRAGE (7)
DC: GROAT (5) GOURMET (7)
OT: REMUAGE (7)
Score: 24–31 (max 33, jos 32)
Darren-o-meter: 2/3 (67%)

Both on sevens again, as is Susie.

Round 5: M P N E O I C P V

Mike: NOVICE (6)
Ryan: peonic (try)
DC: MOPPIE (6)
OT: COVINE (6) INCOME (6) MEONIC (6) NOCIVE (6) PEPINO (6)
Score: 30–31 (max 39, jos 38)
Darren-o-meter: 2/4 (50%)

PEONIC^ is actually spelt PAEONIC, so Mike gets another six points and now the gap is down to 1 point.

Round 6: 25, 5, 1, 7, 3, 9. Target: 412.

Mike: 412. (9 + 7) × 25 + (5 − 1) × 3 (10)
Ryan: 413.
Score: 40–31 (max 49, jos 48)

A good numbers solve here from Mike and he takes the lead for the first time today.

Pam talks about the use of her books and how English teachers have come up with different interpretations of her books that she never actually meant, and then gives us yet another poem from her new book, this one with an Ozzie theme and this is about creationism, i.e. that some of the animals were God's leftovers...

Round 7: S L U T E R B A I

Mike: BLUSTER (7)
Ryan: SUITABLE (8)
DC: BRAISE (6) BRUTALISE (18)
Score: 40–39 (max 67, jos 66)
Darren-o-meter: 3/5 (60%)

A lot of hilarity at SLUT emerging off the board here. I'm surprised Channel 4 didn't cut the round out.

Round 8: S M D B A A E U T

Mike: SAMBAED (7) (try)
Ryan: AMUSED (6)
DC: SMUT (4) DUMBEST (7)
OT: AUBADES (7)
Score: 47–39 (max 74, jos 73)
Darren-o-meter: 3/6 (50%)

Rachel Riley never sambaed on Strictly. Although if her salsa is anything to go by, we were saved an embarrassment.

Round 9: 100, 25, 50, 75, 7, 5. Target: 698.

Mike: 698. 7 × 100 − (75 + 25) ÷ 50 (10)
Ryan: 698. 7 × 100 − 50 ÷ 25 (10)
Score: 57–49 (max 84, jos 83)

With the scores so close and Ryan's numbers not being too good, Mike goes for 4 large. Unfortunately it's an Ariana.

Teatime teaser: MOLENOSE -> LONESOME

Round 10: G N C S A I U A R

Mike: SCARING (7)
Ryan: CAUSING (7)
DC: IGUANAS (7)
OT: GUARANIS (8)
Score: 64–56 (max 92, jos 90)
Darren-o-meter: 4/7 (57%)

Both contestants are on seven, and Pam horribly mispronounces IGUANAS.

Round 11: T P F D E O I W S

Mike: DOPIEST (7)
Ryan: DEPOSIT (7)
DC: FOISTED (7) TOPSIDE (7)
OT: PODITES (7) POSITED (7)
Score: 71–63 (max 99, jos 97)
Darren-o-meter: 4/8 (50%)

Pam gets DEPOSIT again, as if we haven't just heard it from Ryan.

Jake Turner emails in to ask Susie about "making a rod for your own back".

Round 12: T G N S O A E L I

Mike: gelations (mass noun)
Ryan: STEALING (8)
DC: GELATION (8) GASOLINE (8) GENITALS (8) LEGATIONS (18)
Score: 71–71 (max 117, jos 115)
Darren-o-meter: 5/9 (56%)

Oof. Mike does something that I've done myself and gets very close to the word he was (presumably) thinking of... but not close enough. Ouch. And now the scores are level.

Round 13: N R S I O E I M C

Mike: minories
Ryan: NOISIER (7)
DC: IRONISE (7) MINCERS (7) MICRONISE (18)
Score: 71–78 (max 135, jos 133)
Darren-o-meter: 6/10 (60%)

This time I'm not quite sure what Mike was thinking of, but this time Ryan takes a crucial seven point lead.

Round 14: 2, 5, 9, 8, 7, 3. Target: 726.

Mike: 735.
Ryan: 727. 9 × 8 × 5 × 2 + 7 (7)
RR: 726. (9 × 7 + 3) × (8 + 5 − 2) (10)
Score: 71–85 (max 145, jos 143)

Ryan goes for 6 small and gets 1 away, whilst Mike presumably overthinks it and tries too hard, I presume. Unlucky.

Round 15: D A N D E S I G N

Ryan buzzes on 2 seconds to say SADDENING which is correct.
Final Score: 71–95 (max 155, jos 153)

Ryan finishes off the game with the conundrum and knocks Mike off his perch.

Join us soonish for Friday's recap.

<<< I'm not quite sure what Mike was thinking of >>>
Mike used to work in the City of London, where there is a road and a pub called The Minories, which I have been in. When he said it, my first thought was that it would be OK, even if I had no idea what it meant.
