Friday 13th September 2013 (8/10 Cats Series 1, Episode 5)

Post by James Robinson »

So, it's a Friday the 13th and we have a 2nd helping of Countdown, or rather this one is infused with a bit of 8 Out Of 10 Cats as well.

8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown recap for Friday 13 September 2013.

Team 1:
* Bob Mortimer, A comedian with a lovable Northern charm, as unique as Vic Reeves (who will be in DC next week for the 80's special). He has brought along his lucky wig, which he wore when he met his wife at a nightclub called Cardigans. :P
&
* Lee Mack, French for "coat". He pulled out of the Paris Marathon, after he discovered that one leg was shorter than the other. He has brought along his nan's ashes in an urn, as she wanted to be on the show.

Team 2:
* Jon Richardson, known as the "life and soul of party", more like a wake. :P
&
* Adam Hills, an Australian entertainer, they got as they couldn't get Rolf Harris  - He has brought along a "lucky" rabbit mascot, which is so lucky that the Australian team its the mascot of have not won their league title in 41 years............  There's also a nice little mention of the now defunct Australian version of this show, called (quite simply) Letters & Numbers, which of course, famously had this letters selection before its demise....... :P  (Unfortunately, like a famous selection in the country, it was fake. :P )

DC: Susie Dent, whose favourite word is "wangdoodle", which means "poppycock" and Alex Horne, a former contestant back in Series 59, he won 3 shows, before being knocked out, and actually had qualified for the finals, but was busy with his professional work. He has also brought along his band, "The Horne Section", who will be providing some tunes during the show. 8-)

RR: Rachel Riley, who will be appearing on Strictly Come Dancing, will be asked to wear longer skirts (I hope not :!: ;) ), and she would love Ryan Gosling as her co-contestant, not necessarily for his brainpower. :P
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1 (Picked by Bob & Lee): B G A E S C Y E O
Jimmy's Distraction: Jimmy reading Lee's autobiography, "Mack The Life", and putting it in paper shredder. :P

Team 1 - Bob: seabag / Lee: bagsey
Team 2 - Jon: CAGEY (5) / Adam: CAGES (5)
DC: BAGSY (5) becos BOSCAGE (7)
Score: 0–5 (max 7)

So, it looks like a good start for Lee's team, as he and Bob have 6's, whereas Jon and Adam only have 5's. But, while Jon and Adam's are good, Bob's uses a phantom A, and Lee's is really a 5, so it's a lead for Jon's team, while DC get the darrenic 7. 8-)

Before picking the numbers, Jon brings up a French beret to become "L'Enfant Countdown", which also calls for Rachel to call the numbers in French. :P  8-)

Round 2 (Picked by Jon & Adam): 25, 9, 5, 3, 4, 6. Target: 528.
Horne Section Music (Used in the form of the clock music, but with a certain style): Regular instrumental for the first numbers game.

Team 1 - Bob: 535. / Lee: 528. Mistake in working.
Team 2 - Jon: 527. (25 x 4 x 5) + (9 x 3) (7) / Adam: 527. (25 x 4 x 5) + (9 x 3) (7)
RR: 528. ((5 x 25) + 9 - (6 / 3)) x 4 (10)
Score: 0–12 (max 17)

So, it looks like Lee is in pole position for this one, even with the presence of "L'Enfant Countdown", but unfortunately for Lee, 5 x 25 does not equal 500. :P So, Jon's team are a dozen points up going into the first break. :)

Alex and his band do a Countdown song in drum and bass style, as he suggests that the music guests that the show has had in the past haven't really been from that genre. :P

Teatime teaser: GAVEHORN -> HANGOVER

The next round saw Bob and Adam take on each other in the letters round.

Round 3 (Picked by Bob): E A I A O M V T D
Jimmy's Distraction: Jimmy chats to Sooty, Sweep, and somehow to Soo too. ;) :P

Bob: motivate
Adam: MOTIVE (6)
DC: innovated
OT: AVIATED (7) VOMITED (7)
Score: 0–18 (max 24)

A huge gasp as Bob declares an 8, to Adam's 6, but he then realises that he has phantomed a letter again.  :P You almost feel like it's going to be one of those days for Lee's team. :P Slightly surprised that both the 7's were missed by DC, but hey-ho. :P

The next numbers game is a matchup between Lee and Jon.

Round 4 (Picked by Jon): 50, 100, 3, 2, 10, 6. Target: 422.
Horne Section Music: Samba style.

Lee: 422. Mistake in working.
Jon: 424. (50 + 3) x (6 + 2) (7)
RR: 422. ((100 - (3 x 10)) x 6) + 2 (10)
Score: 0–25 (max 34)

Oh deary me, Lee goes into a complete rage at messing this one up, that he spills his nan's ashes all over the main desk, even onto Jon's side of the desk. But, it's another 7 for Jon's team, while Bob & Lee are still on course to be only the 3rd and 4th contestants to score 0 in a game of Countdown. :geek: :ugeek:

Teatime teaser: LEESARSE -> RELEASES

As we begin part 3, Joe Wilkinson appears as the back end of a pantomime horse, and bizarrely, the front end of the horse is occupied by Eddie "The Eagle" Edwards :!:  :o :P  8-)

But, anyway back to normality (of sorts...........) :P

Round 5 (Picked by Bob & Lee): U O A E A N T S R

Team 1 - Bob: seats / Lee: -
Team 2 - Jon: TREASON (7) / Adam: AEONS (5)
DC: restaurant AERONAUTS (18)
Score: 0–32 (max 52)

Yeah, normality is certainly here is your name is Bob, as he declares a word with a phantom letter for the 3rd letters game in a row :!: :!:   :o :o That's TREASON in my books :!: :P  A fantastic 9 from DC is worth mentioning too. :D

Another change of headwear for Jon sees him put on a sombrero for this numbers round. :P

Round 6 (Picked by Jon & Adam): 25, 75, 3, 5, 6, 2. Target: 327.
Horne Section Music: Hillbilly style.

Team 1 - Bob: 327. Mistake in working. / Lee: 328.
Team 2 - Jon: 327. ((75 + 25 + 5) x 3) + (6 x 2) (10) / Adam: 328.
Score: 0–42 (max 62)

This time it's Bob's turn to try and solve the numbers properly, and he gets nowhere either. This pattern is getting well repetitive............... :P But, Jon has mis maths brain in gear this time to get the first max of the game so far. :D

Alex and his band does a song using the letters in the notation scale. 8-)

Teatime teaser: COCKTRAP -> CRACKPOT

Well, this game is at its conclusion, as there are only 38 points available in the last 3 rounds, so Jon & Adam have already won, BUT WAIT!!!!......................

Bob & Lee claim there is a rule that states that the conundrum can be worth ONE HUNDRED POINTS!!! So, Joe checks the "rule book" and concurs, so THIS GAME'S NOT OVER YET :!: :!: :!: 8-) 8-) 8-)

Round 7 (Picked by Jon & Adam): W I L N O U K R I

Team 1 - Bob: winkor / Lee: kroul
Team 2 - Jon: WINK (4) / Adam: KILN (4)
OT: KNURL (5)
Score: 0–46 (max 67)

Well, Lee and Bob might have the upper hand with a 5 and a 6, but based on past performances, I'd prepare for disappointment, and I'm proven to be right again, although Bob did at least not use a phantom letter this time, so a slight improvement. :P :) Just an odd 5 there, so nothing bad missed there. :D

A KNURL is a small ridge or bead, especially one of a series, as on a button for decoration or on the edge of a thumbscrew to assist in obtaining a firm grip.

Round 8 (Picked by Lee & Bob): 25, 75, 9, 2, 9, 6. Target: 412.
Horne Section Music: Jazz style.

Team 1 - Bob: 87. / Lee: 409. Mistake in working.
Team 2 - Jon: 416. (75 x 6) - 25 - 9 (7) / Adam: 432.
RR: 412. ((75 - 2) x 6) - 25 - (9 / 9) (10)
Score: 0–53 (max 77)

Well, half our contestants are too far out this time, Jon manages to reach 4 away, while Lee "thinks" he has 409, although it pretty much sounded like he was making a number up! :P And even though he sort of was, he was inches away from 409 whne he could've just taken away (2 x 50) from his (75 x 6) + 9 :!: :!:

So, now, we could be in for all kinds of history here. With this conundrum being worth 100 points, Lee's team do have a chance of winning, which would be the biggest winning margin from the greatest deficit in the history of the show :!: :!:

Jon does agree to go along with it, even though he thinks he'll definitely lose now............... :P

But, equally, if Jon's team get it, not only will Lee's team have the joint lowest score ever, but Jon's team will have the highest winning score ever, as well as the highest winning margin too :!: :!:

RECORDS OF SOME KIND WILL BE BROKEN, GUYS ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek:

Round 9: D A M P U N C L E

C1 buzzes on 4 seconds to say................

not the right answer basically..............., so Jon's team have won, but can they take the chance to make an unlikely piece of Countdown history................ :? :? :? :?: :?: :?:

LET'S SEE :!: :!: :!:

C2 buzzes on 4.5 seconds to say UNCLAMPED which is correct.
Final Score: 0–153 (max 177)

YOU BET HE CAN!!! ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek: ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek: ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek: ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek: ;) :) :D  8-) :geek: :ugeek:

Now, I'm sure there'll be plenty of arguments and debates about whether we can truly accept this as a top score, since you strictly couldn't get 153 in the normal rules of the 9 rounder, and actually this version of the 9 rounder is normally worse, as the max is normally just 122, compared to the 138 of the old 9-rounder :!: :!: :P :P

But, what is without doubt is that Bob & Lee are a hopeless pairing :!: :!: As, another new bit of history was made, as they had a disallowed word or numbers method in ALL NINE ROUNDS :!: :!: :!:    :o :o :o :geek: :geek: :geek: :ugeek: :ugeek: :ugeek:

Well, hopefully Lee will try and redeem himself next week in the 80's special of Catsdown.

Henning Wehn & David O'Doherty will be Lee and Jon's teammates, while Vic Reeves joins Susie in DC.

Join an as yet unnamed recapper for that one. ;) :) :D

I'll be back as usual on Wednesday for the next Series 69 recap.

So, till then, bye bye for now. 8-) 8-) 8-)

If you take out the silly 100-pointer at the end, that's not a bad score, actually, for Jon. I'd love to see him play real Countdown.

What, and Bagface the bee doesn't get a mention?
No wonder poor Bagface had baggage!
