Round 1: B R N P A U E I N

C1: PANNIER (7) - the only 7.
C2: BANNER (6)
DC: BRUIN (5)
OT: PENNIA (6), PINNAE (6), PUNANI (6), PUNIER (6), PUNNER (6), PURINE (6), RAPINE (6), UNRIPE (6), URBANE (6)
Score: 7–0 (max 7)

Round 2: S B S A E L I F G

C1: FABLES (6)
C2: liases (x) - it's LIAISES
DC: ABSEILS (7)
OT: FABLESS (7), GLASSIE (7), LIGASES (7), SILAGES (DA, 7)
not: filabegs (X)*
Score: 13–0 (max 14)

* a FILIBEG (alt. sp. PHILIBEG) is a kilt. Variant spelling "filabeg" was in the dictionary certainly until 2003. I presume this spelling has fallen out of usage as it has certainly fallen out of the dictionary. It is one to be aware of if it appears in old games as valid, in electronic versions and word lists etc. Well spotted Rich Priest.

* I played FALSIES from home thinking it was slang for false teeth. Given what it really means I wouldn't recommend going round telling old ladies they need falsies, you'd probably get handbagged or something.

Round 3: S L R T E O E I S

C1: LORISES (7)
C2: RETILES (7)
DC: TIRELESS (8)
OT: ESTOILES (8) LEISTERS (8), many more 7's including RISSOLE (??, 7)
Score: 20–7 (max 22)

Round 4: T S F T A E A I R

C1: FATTIES (7)
C2: FATTIES (7)
DC: SATIATE (7)
OT: ARTIEST (7), ARTISTE (7), ATTIRES (7), RATITES (7), STRIATE (7), TASTIER (7), ATRESIA (7), FAIREST (7), FATTIER (7), FITTERS (7), TITFERS (7), STRIATA (7)
Not: fartiest (X) - so if that's in your dictionary it needs to be.. ahem.. ripped out.
Score: 27–14 (max 29)

Round 5: 75, 4, 8, 6, 5, 6. Target: 212.

C1: 212. ( 6 / ( 6 - 4 ) ) * 75 - 8 - 5 =(10)
C2: 212. ( 4 - ( 6 / 6 ) ) * 75 - 8 - 5 =(10)
JB: 212. ( 75 - ( ( 6 * 5 ) - 8 ) ) * 4 =(10)
MK: 212. ( 8 * 6 + 5 ) * 4 =(10)
DA: 212. ( 75 - 4 ) * ( 8 - 5 ) - ( 6 / 6 ) =(10)
Score: 37–24 (max 39)

Teatime teaser: GLENSITS -> SINGLETS*

*GLISTENS is an alternative anagram, but it doesn't match the clue of course.

Round 6: C S G E I O R X E

C1: EXORCISE (8)
C2: CRIES (5)
OT: CERISE (6), CORGIS (6), COSIER (6), EXCISE (6), ORGIES (6), SEXIER (6), SOIREE (6), no 7's.
Score: 45–24 (max 47)

Round 7: M D T C A I O I T

C1: DACOIT (6)
C2: TOAD (4)
OT: AMITOTIC (8), DIATOMIC (PM + DC, 8)*
Score: 51–24 (max 55)

DIATOMIC means, unsurprisingly, consisting of two atoms. Similar word DIATONIC is to do with musical scales and partially explains how come percussionist Terry Bozzio has such an enormous kit.

Round 8: S M L T E O A R N

C1: MONSTERA (8)
C2: TERMS (5)
OT: ALMONERS (8), STOREMAN (8), MOANERS (7)* - about 30 more 7's.
Score: 59–24 (max 63)

*MOANERS extends with C, D, G, H, I, L, T, U and V. See end of review.

Round 9: Q S R M U I E T R

C1: MUSTIER (7)
C2: SQUIRMER (8)
OT: SQUIRTER (JB, 8), QUERIST (7), RUSTIER (7), TRIMERS (7)
Score: 59–32 (max 71)

* Alas, Charlie's 38 round scoring run (two previous games) ends with this top spot from David... Doh!

Round 10: 3, 5, 9, 7, 4, 1. Target: 626.

C1: 629x. Mistake in working.
C2: 620x. Mistake in working.
CV: 626. 7 * 9 * 5 * ( 3 - 1 ) - 4 =(10)
Score: 59–32 (max 81)

Teatime teaser: NOTMUSIC -> MISCOUNT

Round 11: N K N C A O E T V

C1: CONVENT (7)
C2: TANK (4)
DC: CONVENT (7), KNAVE (5), CANOE (5), CANNOT (6)
OT: COVENANT (JC + KL, 8), CENTAVO (7), CONNATE (7)
Score: 66–32 (max 89)

C1: DOLLOP (6)
C2: POODLE (6)
DC: NOODLE (6) LOOPED (6) POOLED (6)
OT: ELOPED (6), LOONED (6), OPENED (6), POLLED (6), POLLEE (6), POLLEN (6), POONED (6)
Score: 72–38 (max 95)

*spot the word association going on. The stuff poodles leave behind is often either pooled or a dollop!

Round 13: P Z R Y A O A D R

C1: PARRY (5)
C2: PARODY (6)
DC: PARODY (6) PARRY (5)
OT: PARADOR (NW, 7), ARROZ (5), ZARDA (5) etc.. couple more 5's
Score: 72–44 (max 102)

Round 14: 100, 10, 8, 5, 9, 7. Target: 835.

C1: 835. ( 100 * 8 ) + ( 7 * 5 ) =(10)

Score: 82–54 (max 112)

Round 15: R U N G C L I M B

C1 doesn't start falling to bits like an old building, instead he buzzes in on 5 seconds.....

...
...

... to declare CRUMBLING, the correct answer.

Final Score: 92–54 (max 122)

Very disappointed as I'm sure we all are that Charlie didn't get a century today, but at least he got another comfortable win. Thus far only two people have scored 100+ in all 8 games of their Octochamp run and I would have loved to have announced a third in my 200th review next week. Also I don't think David played his best. Having just watched Charlie score 114 then 126 there's an inevitable feeling of "Oh sh*t" and inevitable studio nerves. Notably in Round 8 there were over 100 better words on offer, swiftly followed in round 9 by one of the two winning 8's halting Charlie's 38 round scoring streak. That's the way the cookie starts RUNGCLIMB, as they say. DC

Where's FILABEGS from? It's not in the ODE2.

Why not just use the recap writer, it can make a recap with no errors in about 3 minutes.

I think what it is, is that Dave normally likes to credit people for any beaters they come up with (by putting the initials next to the word) and also Dave likes to comment on rounds now and then etc and I don't think you can do this if you use the recapper.

Full credit Rich for that. There is a word FILIBEG which has the variant spelling PHILIBEG, it's a kind of a kilt. My version is ODE2 c. 2003. includes the variant spelling FILABEG both alone and specified with FILIBEG. I can only presume this variant spelling has fallen out of use, and hence fallen out of the later edition of the dictionary.

My version of CountMax and the online Review Writer do include this now dropped variant spelling so that certainly would have gone unnoticed.

I wonder who's doing the edits for JimDic (and the version the online review tool accesses), there's a little one wants doing.

Perhaps you'd like to share fridays with Joseph then? I'll look forward to a youtube of you cracking a top quality review out in 3 minutes flat, including all declared solutions from the spoilers thread, interesting sub-optimal words and a few observations and comments of your own on the game.

Actually better still Series 48 wants doing. 100 odd games or thereabouts. 1 hour per night for a week and you'd have them all done. The forum would appreciate your efforts for sure.

I don't think it warranted a sarcastic response like that, Dave. Martin was just making a valid helpful point. Also, Joseph, you *can* add whatever spiel you want on the recap writer, so don't worry about not making it personal.

For the record my best time for a 15 round recap is around 7 minutes, and I'm probably the most experienced user of it. So 3 minutes is maybe a little optimistic.

I may have missed it thanks to getting to grips with my dad's TV thing, but did the site get spelt out today? I didn't notice if it did.

It took me about 10 hours to do my recap of Kai's last game  to be fair I did make it into a bit of a five-volume novel, and while you don't have to (and probably shouldn't) go to those lengths, nor should you, IMHO, see recapping as a bang-them-out-as-fast-as-possible exercise... I think most people will be happy to wait a bit longer for a recap which has been 'personalized' a bit, in the ways that Dave mentions

Dave, with regard to word-list errors on CountMax / the recap writer, post them in the 'CountMax errors' thread in the 'General' section - I'll do that for FILABEG shortly.

Michael Wylie hasn't worked on Countdown for some time, which probably explains this mystery!
