Little and large, small and big!

Post by Dave Preece »

Is anyone else wondering why Rachel seems to deliberately not stick to one way of describing the two sets of numbers?

When the contestant asks for one large and five small, RR quite often says back, "One big one and five little ones", or even sometimes mixes the different words?

Am I just being picky here?

or thick?

Is there a correct way?

"One greater number and five of those lesser shitty ones, please" is the only grammatically correct way.

This level of unpredictability, devil-may-careness and wild uncontrollable danger seeking surely helps to brighten everyone's day.

Going off on a tangent here, but in the early days, it was quite standard for contestants to specify which rows they wanted the small numbers from - you still get hangovers from that era like the "Whitehall" (1-2-1-2) or the inverted T, but generally such formalities seem to have been dispensed with. Never really saw the point of this.

I always thought that asking for rows was what people were "supposed" to do and that asking for "anywhere else" was somehow wrong, although not as bad as asking for specific numbers (as in inverted T) because that's just not allowed! Underspecifying isn't as bad as overspecifying because all you're doing is handing some of your choice over rather than asking for something you're not allowed to.

I remember players in the distant past asking for (for example):

"One from the top, please Carol; one from the next; two from the next; and finally, two from the bottom."

Or even...

"One from the top, and five from the bottom!"

At the end of the day it's contestants choice.

My favourites have been:
Gino Corr's "outisde left" and "outside right", and...
Two from the end of each row (and Carol had to bend over picking two at once from the end of each row thus showing a bit of cleavage)
