Giles is past the halfway point now, and he's done it by averaging just under 121 points per game. It's been a very impressive few games, averaging just under 121 points per game and scoring over 94% of the maximum possible points. We'll see how things carry over in game number 5 today.

Join James for the recap later.

Just got ENDGATES in round 2 to equal DC and beat the contestants.

How many points per game does Giles average?

R14

((7x6) - 5 -5) x 3 x 7 = 672

It would help if I edit my double typing there, wouldn't it? Sorry Jon, honestly just noticed that mistake as you said it.

Dunno but why haven't you commented that he doesn't look away from the conundrum scramble straight away when he buzzes?

Currently on 603 overall, so 120.6 right now.

And truthfully, I do solve the conundrum before I buzz. I just want to make sure the letters don't change or something because I'm scared of getting it wrong. And I can't see the actual board and I might forget the answer if I look away.

I believe you but I'm surprised Corby does.

Or ((7+5) x (5+3)) x 7 = 672.

Excellent stuff again, Giles, you're on for a big octochamp total I think. Great speed on the conundrum again.

A few alternatives for the letters rounds: PONIARD (R1), VARROAS (R10) and MAGNOLIA (R13).

So someone remind me:

a) what's the highest average per game for an octorun?
b) what's the highest octototal? (Is it 943 or something by Jack Hurst?)

Anyway, I think Giles is doing pretty phenomenally so far! An incredible standard to maintain.

946 by Jack Hurst, averaging 118.25 a game.

Super staggering, already passed 600 points, which is super ridiculous after playing just 5 games :!: :!:   :o :o

My results today against Giles and Mark (or 'Other Mark' as I like to call him... I'm the original):

R1 - ORDAIN
R2 - engaged (Only one G in the selection... I think I was muddled as there were two S's in there)
R3 - Mistake in working (but I'd only managed 503 anyway)
R4 - NOTION
R5 - POSTIE
R6 - On Target (5 x 7 = 35 - 10 + 7 - 1 + 75 = 106)
R7 - SUITED
R8 - MACE
R9 - On Target (6 - 1 + 5 x 50 = 250 - 9 - 7 = 234)
R10 - RAVERS
R11 - HANDIER
R12 - BOOSTER
R13 - ROAMING
R14 - Nowhere near.
R15 - Giles beat me, so unknown if I could have beaten Other Mark.

If I'd been in live play against either, I'd have lost. Other Mark was leading 79-55 going into the Conundrum so I wouldn't have won regardless. Giles, as usual, gave me a sound beating at 124-50. Only one more edition to go before I film (or two, if you count 8 Out of 10 Cats does Countdown tomorrow night). Must try and do better.

This is going to be a record anyway if he wins eight games, just like Tom Hargreaves set the record regardless of whether he beat David Williams's total!

(I would probably say the new format is worth about 20 points to an octorun - between 2 and 3 a game.)

Using apterous figures, I've worked out that the new format is worth exactly 2.2389769436420136454774211027368 more points per game, which is 17.911815549136109163819368821894 points per octorun. :D

Actually it might be slightly more, since apterites like to go for those 4 large and 6 small picks pretty often.

Even if I believe that ^ it doesn't alter the fact that once you've buzzed you lose the right to do any more checks (letters not changing etc).

I haven't actually seen any of Giles's games yet either btw so I'm not really commenting either way, I only posted to do that hilarious bit of observational comedy that Jordan had posted Giles's average points per game in two consecutive sentences 8-)

Not surprised they keep winning if they're allowed to choose 10 numbers ;)

KILOTONNE was an excellent spot by Richard / Susie / Damian, and RIchard's story about the other Richard and Penistone was a nice interlude too. Going to watch today's one "live" now, how exciting!
