Post by Tony Atkins »

Countdown recap for Friday 9 November 2012. Last show before Remembrance Day so all are wering poppies.

C1: Champion Heather Styles (2 wins, 203 points). From Sevenoaks. Apterite and regular at Co events. According to
Nick she has "done very well" so far. Possibily the politest ever champion.

DC: Susie Dent and Janet Street-Porter.
RR: Rachel Riley in white with some grey stripes and black vertical side stripes.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Nick talks about remebering the serving forces past and present, and visits to the war graves in Jerusalem (an uncle from 1917) and in Normandy. Rachel says her grandfathers both served and cousin James was a TA Doctor in Iraq.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: D N W E A U R B O

C1: BROWNED (7)
C2: BROADEN (7)
DC: BOUNDER (7)
OT: BANDORE (7) REBOUND (7) REWOUND (7) RONDEAU (7) UNBOWED (7) UNROBED (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)

Sevens all round. BANDORE was James Robinson's favourite here - a brass lute.

Round 2: S D I E O R N A T

C1: RATIONED (8)
C2: RODENTS (7)
DC: DERATIONS (18) NOTARISED (18) ORDINATES (18) STRAINED (8)
Score: 15–7 (max 25)

Heather kicks herself under the tabel for missing the standard 9s. Often this happens because of the order of the letters
and in other orders the 9s become easier to see (well that's my excuse).

Round 3: S R M N O I E U R

C1: URSINE (6)
C2: MINERS (6)
DC: MERINOS (7) MOURNERS (8)
OT: MOUSIER (7)
Score: 21–13 (max 33)

Both players score but miss the fairly easy longer words.

Round 4: S X K O A I S C E

C1: SOCKS (5)
C2: AXIS (4)
DC: SEASICK (7) COAXES (6)
Score: 26–13 (max 40)

What seems a very hard round, makes everyone sick when DC give their 7.

Round 5: 3, 1, 6, 8, 10, 25. Target: 379.

C1: 380. (25+6+8-1)x10 (7)
C2: 378. (10+6-1)x25+3 (7)
RR: 379. (10+3)x25+((8+1)x6) (10)
OT: 379. (10+6)x25-((8-1)x3)
Score: 33–20 (max 50)

One of those reasonably hard 1 larges, so the players are happy with 7.

JSP talks about the Olympics and how she left the country to escape the helicopters buzzing over London.
She noted the increased sales of nuts, crisps and beer over the period which will leave a long legacy on those
who ate them in excess.

Teatime teaser: OLDCRESS -> CORDLESS

Round 6: Y G J A O E F T A

C1: FOGEY (5)
C2: AGATE (5)
DC: GOATY (5)
Score: 38–25 (max 55)

Heather looks at Nick when saying FOGEY, but doesn't mean it of course. Nothing better to see there though.

Round 7: I O I E P C G L W

C1: POLICE (6)
C2: POLICE (6)
OT: GWEILO (6)
Score: 44–31 (max 61)

Even DC see the police, but there is the alternative GWEILO which is a foreigner in SE Asia.

Round 8: H T Q I E A N L O

C1: ELATION (7)
C2: LOATHE (6)
DC: HOTLINE (7)
OT: ETHANOL (7) TOENAIL (7)
Score: 51–31 (max 68)

A few 7s and Heather shows elation at getting one.

Round 9: E I O U D M T L V

C1: OUTLIVED (8)
C2: MUTED (5)
Score: 59–31 (max 76)

Heather spots the Darren to go further ahead.

SD talks about Heart words - Latin Cor which gives rise to cordial drinks and courage.
She notes "I heart" is now common usage, but the verb is old Anglo-Saxon meaning
to embolden and was used by Tennyson.

Round 10: 8, 9, 1, 50, 25, 100. Target: 989.

C1: 990. (9+1)x100-8-(50/25) (7)
C2: 984.
RR: 989. (100+8+(50/25))x9-1 (10)
Score: 66–31 (max 86)

Keith picks three large, but leaves it to Rachel who shines by showing how it's done.

Teatime teaser: SLEEPTED -> DEPLETES

Round 11: T S D E A E N S N

C1: NEATNESS (8)
C2: NEATNESS (8)
DC: STANDEES (8)
OT: ASSENTED (8)
Score: 74–39 (max 94)

The players have neatness, but DC find what Nick is no longer on the bus as young ladies stand up for him.

Round 12: H R S O I U T O F

C1: RIOTOUS (7)
C2: FROTHS (6)
DC: HOURIS (6)
OT: FOURTHS (7) FURIOSO (7) SOFRITO (7)
Score: 81–39 (max 101)

Heather wraps up the win by seeing one of the 7s. SOFRITO is fried onion and garlic used in cooking.
FURIOSO is a musical term. JSP likes HOURIS.

Round 13: I E A E D T L V G

C1: LIGATED (7)
C2: VALETED (7)
DC: VEILED (6)
OT: LEVIGATED (18)
Score: 88–46 (max 119)

They players all get 7, but everyone (including the forum) miss the archaic 9 which means to grind to a powder.

Round 14: 3, 10, 2, 75, 100, 50. Target: 524.

C1: 525.
C2: 524. (50x10)+(100-75)-(3-2) (10)
OT: 524 (50+3)x(10-2)+100
Score: 88–56 (max 129)

Rachel is allowed to chose the selection and plays to Keith's strength.

Round 15: K E N I S D U L L

C1 buzzes on 13 seconds to say UNSKILLED which is correct.

Final Score: 98–56 (max 139)
Heather 8 maxes - Keith 4 maxes.
Raw scores 104 - 91

Another strong performance from Heather. Will she continue to win and overtake mother Phyl's total?
