Countdown recap for Tuesday 17 April 2012.

Welcome to a special 'Repetition Day' recap! (plaudits to Jordan, for that one  )

Unfortunately this will be my final recap for the time being :( Hope you enjoy it!

C1: Champion Hilary White (1 win, 80 points) - a retired care worker from Harrow Barrow, Cornwall (I want to live there!!). She won a closely-fought game against Nathan Steggles yesterday and is hoping to win a second against...
C2: Challenger Steve Middleton - an IT project manager from Croxley Green, Herts. He's had a child in every decade since the 1970's
DC: The delightful Susie Dent and the incredible Margaret Mountford.
RR: The dazzling Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: W L E O G R U X I
R02: D N F O A I N K E
R03: T P R A E H G I A
R04: D L T E A O Y S U

R07: M L I M E N I S E
R08: S G R U I E T A T

TTT: BENSGASH - "Did Ricky Martin live in these kind of places?"
R11: C S D O I O T J U
R12: M L G E I A V F E
R13: R D P I A E S N O

Nick and Rachel discuss the pros and cons of having grey hair! Nick's 'Silver Fox' status has apparently earned him some packages that can't be talked about at 3.10pm as well :D
Enjoy the show.

Round 1: W L E O G R U X I

C1: GLOWER (6)
C2: GROWL (5)
DC: UGLIER (6) LUREX (5)
OT: GWEILO (6) LOGIER (6) LOURIE (6) REGULI (6) REGULO (6)
Score: 6–0 (max 6)

Hilary picks up where she left off here with one of several 6's. Susie explains that LUREX has lost its capital letter over time.
A GWEILO, in SE Asia, is a foreigner.
REGULO is another term for 'gas mark' on an oven.

Round 2: D N F O A I N K E

C1: FANNIED (7)
C2: FAKED (5)
DC: KNIFED (6) OINKED (6)
Score: 13–0 (max 13)

Hilary stretches her advantage to 13 with this darren.

Round 3: T P R A E H G I A

C1: RIGHT (5)
C2: PIRATE (6)
DC: GRAPHITE (8)
Score: 13–6 (max 21)

Steve's off the mark now, but Dictionary Corner (and me!) find the impressive 8. :)

Round 4: D L T E A O Y S U

C1: STEADY (6)
C2: SALTED (6)
DC: OUTLAYS (7) SALUTED (7)
OT: AULDEST (7) LAYOUTS (7) LOUDEST (7) TOUSLED (7)
Score: 19–12 (max 28)

A few 7's on offer but the contestants are stuck on 6.
To TOUSLE is to make something untidy, esp. hair.

Round 5: 3, 8, 2, 5, 10, 2. Target: 768.

C1: -
C2: 763. (5*8-2)*2*10+3 (7)
RR: 768. (5*10-2)*2*8 (10)
Score: 19–19 (max 38)

Hilary blobs on one of her six small selections for the second time and Steve is able to draw level at the first interval.
I thought my alternative method of (8+3)*(5+2)*10-2 was quite simple, to be honest :?

Margaret talks about some of her and Nick's times on The Apprentice.

Teatime teaser: ARRESTED -> RETREADS

Round 6: R P C E A O H R P

C1: REPROACH (8)
C2: REPROACH (8)
DC: POACHER (7)
Nick: PROPER (6)
Score: 27–27 (max 46)

Both are on the ball here

Round 7: M L I M E N I S E

C1: SLIME (5)
C2: SLIME (5)
DC: SIMILE (6) IMMENSE (7)
OT: MIELIES (7)
Score: 32–32 (max 53)

But they ain't for long as DC find the relatively easy-to-spot 7.
MIELIES are South African maize plants.

Round 8: S G R U I E T A T

C1: GUSTIER (7)
C2: AUTIST (6)
DC: GUITARS (7)
OT: AGISTER (7) ARTIEST (7) ARTISTE (7) ATTIRES (7) GAITERS (7) GUTSIER (7) GUTTERS (7) GUTTIER (7) GUTTIES (7) RATITES (7) SITUATE (7) STAGIER (7) STATURE (7) STRIATE (7) TARGETS (7) TASTIER (7) TRIAGES (7) TURISTA (7)
Score: 39–32 (max 60)

Only twenty 7's to choose from here, and Steve can't find one of them
Contender for flattest possible round?

RATITES are any large flightless birds that have a breastbone that makes them unable to fly (or if you prefer, what you can collect on Apterous for declaring a nine containing the letters A, P, T, E, R, O, U and S  )
TURISTA, as well as meaning a tourist, can also be diarrhoea as suffered by holidaymakers by visiting certain foreign countries. Sorry if you were eating then, like. :?

Round 9: N N O E W U V O A

C1: UNWOVEN (7)
C2: UNWOVEN (7)
DC: NOVENA (6)
Score: 46–39 (max 67)

Neither are certain it exists, but it certainly does.

Time for our seminar!

OoW - Susie talks about the origins of 'up the spout' and 'pawn'.

Round 10: 75, 4, 6, 10, 9, 7. Target: 106.

C1: 106. 75+10*4-9 (10)
C2: 107.
Score: 56–39 (max 77)

Time for Steve to blob on numbers.

Teatime teaser: BENSGASH -> SHEBANGS.
Hilarious scenes here, as Susie has never heard of the song 'She Bangs' or Ricky Martin, and so assumes that he was singing about American shelters or rough huts :D Cue Rachel singing part of the chorus... badly

Round 11: C S D O I O T J U

C1: DISCO (5)
C2: JOUST (5)
DC: JOIST (5) JUDOIST (7)
Score: 61–44 (max 84)

JUDOIST makes a swift return - it only came up in my recap last Tuesday.
Rachel's still giggling away.

Round 12: M L G E I A V F E

C1: GAVEL (5)
C2: MILAGE (6)
DC: MILEAGE (7) GLAIVE (6) FEMALE (6)
Score: 61–50 (max 91)

:o !!! Steve may have missed out by not putting another E in his MILAGE (you can spell it both ways), but Hilary is stuck on 5. Close finish, here we come.

Round 13: R D P I A E S N O

C1: OPERANDS (8)
C2: derision
OT: ANEROIDS (8) ANODISER (8) DIASPORE (8) PADRINOS (8) PADRONES (8) PARODIES (8) PONIARDS (8) PRISONED (8) SPRAINED (8)
Score: 69–50 (max 99)

Or maybe not. A nice 8 from Hilary has effectively sealed the contest.
PONIARDS are small, slim daggers.

Round 14: 100, 75, 3, 6, 8, 9. Target: 801.

C1: 801. 8*100+(9-6)/3 (10)
C2: 801. 8*100+(9-6)/3 (10)
Score: 79–60 (max 109)

Simple numbers ensures Hilary her second win.

Round 15: A C E S M O U T H

C1 buzzes on 7 seconds to say MOUSTACHE which is correct.
Final Score: 89–60 (max 119)

And she solves a tricky conundrum to top it all off.

Raw score: 99-83
Maxes: 9-3

Had Steve come across a less hot opponent I reckon he might have snatched a win, but it's not to be and he's going back to Hertfordshire to greet his kids.
Judging by her performances so far, Hilary looks like she could go on to win a few more - join James tomorrow to see if she can win a third. :)

That's it from me now, I hope to be back with a recap for you sometime soon. 8-)

Meanwhile, join James tomorrow, same time, same place, in fact... you be sure of it!!! :D
Good afternoon.
