I'm sad that Denise lost this game, but happy that Ian won it!

I must say, I have never seen a contestant as nervous as Ian ever on Countdown. It looked like he was going to talk and correct something Des had said about him, but he was telling the truth after all. To tell the rest of you the truth, I hope Kate stays on Countdown after this series, because she is a very prolific writer as well as a nice lady.

However, I am equally glad that Ian won because he came out of his "shell." That's one of the ways to win Countdown, to come out of your "shell."

......unless of course you happen to be a hermit crab.

A good piece of advice to remember when wanting to speak is to remember that it's not what you say, but how you say it.

I think you're undervaluing "what" here. Sure, "how" can be important, but you're completely disregarding the importance of "what", which is wrong. But it does explain a lot.

I'm not sure what the typical figure is, but I believe that our communications with someone stood in front of us, a surprisingly small amount of what we communicate is through our words.

Intonation, rising and lowering tones (like French people raise the tone at the end of a sentence to indicate a question, is that right?) our tone of voice overall, proximity, what we do with our arms, eyes and all that.

This probably explains why with text alone we sometimes struggle to not cause offence.

I have noticed that for a really important topic I might want to meet in person, or at least use the phone rather than texting and E-mailing, but didn't know why. Probably because seeing the person allows us to communicate better.

In recent games the women folk have certainly done themselves proud, all power to them I say.

If there's one thing the human condition offers to even the most casual of observers it's variety. It is, I think more worthy a pursuit to consider a persons abilities and positives than to be at all concerned with any perceived inadequacies, which can more often than not be quietly ignored or quickly pushed past... this applies not only to other people, but also ourselves.

The human condition is endlessly interesting in all it's various shapes sizes and guises. You wanna post a link, post a link and I should certainly take a look behind it. Communication breakdowns and such are common amongst everyone, if we realise this we should be able to make them easier to deal with. Given this it is safe to conclude that any condition that complicates matters is probably not quite as extreme as it might appear.

Being interested or not interested is not the same thing as generally desiring that our various inadequacies are given as little importance as possible.

Ah yes, Birthdays. They are very healthy things. Research has indicated that people who have the most birthdays tend to live the longest.

A shame no one remembered to mention that today was National Countdown Day - if I'd only joined this forum a couple of months earlier I certainly would have done.

For those who don't recall, NCD was declared on this date in 2003 by Richard Digance. This year has the first NCD since then; and the next one won't be until 2014. The reason? NCD only occurs in years when the 17th of September is a Wednesday - because WEDNESDAY is the only day of the week whose name has 9 letters; and SEPTEMBER is the only month of the year whose name has 9 letters; and SEVENTEEN is the only cardinal number representing a day of the month whose name is a non-hyphenated word of 9 letters.

Roll on 2014 (anyone taking bets on whether Countdown will still be on air by then?)!

I vaguely remember this. He did a little poem or something. You could also have TWENTIETH as a 9 letter ordinal. Would also make a nice conundrum (WHITETENT)

I remember it (I should do, cos I was on the very show that The Digance suggested it) but completely forgot about it on the day itself. Anyway, it clashes with the feast day of Saint Hildegard of Bingen and I know which takes priority in my house!
