I'd imagine it took quite a bit of buttering up.
The idea of butter being used as lube disgusts me. Olive oil is just about ok (as a concept, not ever needed it) but nothing more dairy-like than that. Where do you stop, beef dripping? Yeuch.

Crisco is, or used to be, a favourite among the American BDSM crowd. But that might be vegetable-based, I'm not sure.
