Maybe personal stuff, unless strictly relevant to the thread, should stay in 'off-topic' or personal messages. I'm rather used to more chatty parenting forums, I suppose. ;)

"I must talk about Countdown", "I must talk about Countdown", "I must talk about Countdown", "I must talk about Countdown", "I must talk about Countdown".

Jason, I suppose that discussing ways around workplace filters isn't quite the 'connection problems' the thread was started for, but not that much of a drift.
It's all part of whether we can log onto apterous or not.

David, I asked my 18 YO, who said, if vtunnel didn't work, then try one of the other proxies that are linked from it. No other ideas if that doesn't work, though.

I do not mean to be tactless, well, I do a little, but try and keep your posts relevant to the thread. For one thing it creates a lot of traffic so that I nearly missed Debbie's post about proxies: tried it, didn't work for me, unfortunately.
Sorry for my part in the thread drift, David! :(

BTW, it was I who posted the proxy site link. Sorry it didn't work.
I'll ask my eldest 2 for other ideas. They both spend far too much time online, and may come up with something.
Cheers Julie, I have no problem with a thread drifting slightly I just thought that locking a useful thread would be a complete over-reaction.

So the night before I (presumably) play Reams in the COGST plate semi (dubbed by some as the most eagerly anticipated Countdown game ever), and it's just hanging on the logging in screen.

Coincidence? Probably! But this shall be my excuse!

Yet another power cut. Getting a bit ridiculous now but I can't move the server until I get Internet access in my own house. Today's Duel will once again roll over to tomorrow.

Maybe your Mum unplugs it to hoover?

Perhaps you should offer to contribute to their electric bill from the apterous donations to sweeten your parents up a bit! ;)

Is Apterous knackered at the moment? I can't log in to play, and the game browser's gone a bit weird with repeating results.

Don't know if it's a consolation to anyone, but we just got our power back after being off for 21 FUCKING HOURS. On average my hands are a normal temperature, because they're bloody cold except for the fingertip I burned lighting candles. Grrr.

Oh, bad luck, Paul! :(

We had power fluctuations yesterday evening, lights flickering and TV/DVD going off and on a few times, but the electricity didn't actually go off.
One of my sons and I were watching 'Dark Star' on DVD, so I thought it rather appropriate, what with power faults fecking up the spaceship controls!

Hi Charlie, i put this at the known bugs thread as well but i can't get on to the playing area.
It says 'Login Failed: java.net.ConnectionException: Connection Refused: connect'
Why does it say this?
Thanks

The server has been done for most of this evening due to the switch to a new fixed IP. This should be the last downtime of this sort, at least. Today's Duel will therefore roll over to tomorrow.

Is apterous down at the moment? I've been having problems connecting from work lately, but of the sort where the apterous homepage was just hanging and not loading up at all. I cleared all my internet history, and now the homepage loads up fine, but when I click play I get the "connection refused" message. Is everyone getting this, or is something strange going on with my work connection?

Hmmm, actually I notice there are no games since 4am today, so maybe that answers my question...

The server was supposed to restart itself at 4am, but it seems it managed to shutdown but didn't feel like coming back up again. We're online again now.

I can't log in at work anymore.

Tried all day but its not loading up the orange java application.

Have you changed something technical Charlie that might affect ports at my end?

Mine was hanging indefinitely until I deleted all internet history (files, cookies everything) and tried again. Maybe try that?

Yeah tried that Jon, still sticking on the Java load-up bit.

I've had the same problem for a few days now. I've tried various suggestions, re-installed java, deleted history/cookies etc, but nothing seems to work. The log in page just doesn't load up.

I've not had this problem myself, but what about if you tried doing a Windows Update? Would that do anything?

"There was an error while executing the application".

No worries, don't dwell on it Charlie, am sure you can put your time to far better use.

My IT dept have said its a problem with apterous as opposed to my PC set-up, Charlie.

Are they telling me porkies?

D
They are (probably) lying.

Just signed up to apterous.org, clicked Play all excitedly and got this:

Login failed: java.io.IOException: Could not log in

What's that all about?

Also, the above message was in a window which wouldn't let me copy and paste text for some reason, so I had to type the error message in here manually, which was a bit of a pain.

I'm thinking about both problems in parallel, although in the case of your problem I'm mainly thinking "WTF".

Try clearing your Java cache: here's a step-by-step guide.

It's a shame when you have to actually earn your paypacket, isn't it ;)

I searched the thread and couldn't find out how to do this, but anyway I tried again some hours later and the problem had magically fixed itself. :)

Then I eventually figured out by pressing random buttons how to play a game against someone. I lost.

Is apterous down ATM, or is it just me? I've tried restarting my computer, but I can't get into it.
I have to get back to cooking the Sunday roast now, so I might be doing the duel later replete with chicken, roasties etc. and a couple of glasses of wine! :)

It's down - you can always guess that by checking game browser to see when the last game was completed and it was about an hour ago. It's given me a chance to do some work for school!

Such a blessing in disguise for me too, I've finally done my English essay.

But now I've finished. Give me apterous. :)

Thanks, Kirk. As Apterous has been down since 6:15pm, will today's daily duel roll over till tomorrow?

The problem is here. You'll need to get your friends in the IT department to allow connections on TCP port 443.
