Richard Samson, Countdown's longest-serving male lexicographer has sadly passed away following a terminal illness. He made over 300 appearances in DC, the last being in Series 50 in 2003.

I chanced upon his Linkedin profile a few weeks ago as we had a few contacts in common.

I find the grace and good humour demonstrated there really moving. I hope he excelled in his final role and that his family and friends made his life wonderful too.

RIP Richard. Although I do not remember much about him, I can recall him being in DC for Julian's extraordinary 146 game.

Terribly sad news. Richard was in DC during all of my games bar one. Nice chap with a good sense of humour. I'm sure he'll be much missed by family and friends.

Just been reading Richard's blog. Wish I'd discovered it while he was still alive.

Thanks for that Phil, just spent a good amount of time reading it all. I confess to having not known of him from Countdown.

My thoughts tonight are with Richard and the family he's left behind.

Other than Susie, I'd say he was the best lexicographer on the show and it was a shame he disappeared from screens when Susie went full time.

RIP Scissors.

I preferred him to Susie actually.

I was never quite comfortable with his tilted-head grinning antics, but aye, a shame.

I had absolutely no idea who he was. But anyway, bye bye Richard Samson who I didn't even know. Hades will look after you!

P.S. Hades is the Greek God of the underworld. That is my fact of this post! ...Most of the facts of my other posts are: I am random and crazy. Thank you, readers, for reading. Oh, and, feel free to call me Randzy (half random, half crazy), Soph The Poph (I made that up myself and I like it) or Cukoos (my friends used to call me that)

RIP - I remember watching you on TV when I was little. Sad to see someone so young (in comparison) leave this world.
