Really? When you say the game browser, do you mean the panel that shows current games in progress, or the pages that show a recap of the game?

The pages showing the recap, specifically this one

http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=867

was definitely against Apterous Rex. I didn't look at the games in progress panel but all the in game dialog used Apterous Rex, as far as I know it's just the recap page that's mislabelled.

Ah, you are correct. Damn database cache. Now fixed.

Not really a bug as such but on the 4th high scoring game down, I clicked on it to read the recap and it said only generous types can read it. I've donated - does that not make me generous?

Did you remember to log in first? If the problem reoccurs, send me the link to the problematic page itself and I'll look into it.

It's fine today, it just says no game details.

The new Goatdown feature is sex on legs but alas has a bug- after picking 6 consonants and 2 vowels, the bot I was playing then picked an S- my understanding of the goatdown rules is that the final pick can't override the maximum vowel/consonant limit like this.

I did check this against the official rules and they make no mention of the traditional V/C rules, so I figure anything goes. Especially because that's a lot easier to code.

I'd definitely keep Goatdown like it is, I'd hate to spot a two vowelled 8 that I then couldn't get because of a 6V/3C restriction.

Also, someone (MW? I'm too lazy to look) mentioned open challenges which would be cool if it's easy, then I could just let apterous run in the background, plus I'm really bashful about challenging people

Also cool would be to see statistics of head-to-head matchups, e.g. win-lose records, total points scored broken down into letters-nums-cons, who's my nemesis and who's my gimp, that kind of thing.

One possibly cool and more probably shite idea for a variant is to treat the letters rounds as conundrums: people keep submitting words and the first one to get the max gets a point (0 if noone gets it, maybe 2 if its darrenic).

And I've just realised this isn't the suggestions thread. Sorry.

Here's an actual bug, or at least undesirable behaviour: my score in the daily duel got announced in aptochat, which I assume you want to keep secret.

Bizarre behaviour on the ratings- losing to Stewy in his first ever game dropped my rating from 580 to 356.

Unlucky :)

I think the same thing happened to Kirk when he lost to Matthew Green in one of his first games. IIRC Kirk challenged him again, beat him and had his rating restored to an even higher level, so see if you can do that!

Of course the real lesson here is to never, ever play anyone new.

Just had a slightly weird one. The game froze after I'd clicked to start rd 8 but before any letters were selected, so I quit and logged in again, and when resuming we got to play round 8 again. Then, when it got to the conundrum, I head the game finishing noise and I got the button to end the game rather than advance to the conundrum, so I quit without playing a conundrum. When I went to challenge apterous again it still had resume and resign buttons active, so I resumed and the game state was with the conundrum finished and solved by apterous. At no point did I ever see a conundrum window. Then the whole thing froze again when I clicked to finish the game and I had to crtl-alt-del.

Also, my chat is dead. Same problem as before, no welcome message, no messages appear.

Just noticed that the above game got recorded twice on the game browser as well:

Also, yesterday's Daily Duel is showing 139 as the max, which includes 7 points for the first numbers game, which if you look at my effort, I scored 10 on :) (and then the numbers went slightly downhill after that).

Do you still score the same on numbers game on Hyper btw? Seems harsh to get 11 away from a 4-digit total and not score, if that is the case.

I think this is fixed now. Would I be right in saying it only ever occurred in Goatdown?

Not really a bug as such but when there are more than one conundrum to be solved, the "max" column shouldn't go up by 10 every time, e.g.

http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=1259

If we had say 20 conundrums going unsolved, you could have a max of like over 300 which just shouldn't happen. Tiny point really.

Hmm. I guess you're kinda right. This is a debate which has never really been solved. I'll think about how to handle it.

Nah, I don't think I would have been doing anything else - I had just selected my awesome 8-letter winner to crush your puny declaration of 4. I saw the outline of the "end of round" dialogue box appear in the top left of my screen (as I occasionally do actually before it repositions itself) but this time everything just hung, and then gradually disappeared.

I've had a couple of problems with conundrums vs. bots, first time the box never appeared, the second time I tried to enter the conundrum and it wouldn't let me submit.

Played Jono at 5 second Countdown a minute ago and I typed in my word, COPIERS and declared it and then it says "declare your word" and nothing moves on.
Also, chat doesn't work a lot of the time so I have to close my browser completely before logging back in for it to work. Not sure why.

I've just signed up for this, and the Applet appears to freeze when I open it. I get the message "Logging in to.......please wait...", but that's all I get. Is this a bug, or am I missing something?

In Hyperconundrums/Hypergoatconundrums, the letters appear too small to be visible- wide ones like Ms and Ws appear as an ellpisis.

A couple of times in conundrums when my opponent has buzzed and got it wrong, some of the letters in it are replaced by dots which makes it rather difficult!

Just noticed another game that appeared twice on the game browser. I think this may have been a game that was abandoned mid round and resumed because Ben got WSOD but I'm not certain.

Sadly the console output is gone but I think I could dig it up if you really needed it.

Unlucky :)

I think the same thing happened to Kirk when he lost to Matthew Green in one of his first games. IIRC Kirk challenged him again, beat him and had his rating restored to an even higher level, so see if you can do that!

Of course the real lesson here is to never, ever play anyone new.
Apterous ratings don't matter that much, do they though? They're (probably) not going to be used for tournaments - well not the main ones like COLin, COBris, COOT, COGST etc.; we're sticking to the cdb ratings for those aren't we?

I guess it'd be at the discretion of tourney organisers, but I don't see any reason not to use the cdb ratings. You're right that the apterous ratings don't mean a great deal, especially when you can do stuff like steal rating from the good bots on conundrum challenges.

Yep. Apterous ratings are a quick and dirty guide to the level of your opponent. CDB ratings are more mathematically solid, have a lot more data behind them, and a track record of several years of giving fairly realistic output -- much better suited to tournament seedings. They can happily coexist.

I'm currently on the applet, and the chat just isn't working for me at all. I've played a game fine, which has made me notice that the two games I played yesterday aren't taken into account in my record: It says I've got one win from 1 game when I lost twice yesterday. Stee-range.

The error is "Thread 220, Java.io.IO exception: An established connection was aborted by the software in your home machine."

Err, no. That shouldn't happen. The 2 games you played did get put in the database, but somehow your game count got out of synch. I will fix this. Thanks for letting me know.

I've just lost connection during a game with the bot, and when I reconnected I seemed to be locked. Unable to continue game, and unable to start a new one.

Having got this far in this post, I went back to Apterous, and this time I was invited to resume the game. However, I was put into a letters round (correct) but only allowed to choose vowels - the request consonant box was missing. After selecting 5 vowels it wouldn't let me do anything.

The only button which appears to be available to me is Resign Game, but when I select this, I'm asked to confirm resignation, but on replying yes, the game doesn't stop.

Error tracker gives the following (got to type it in, as select and copy doesn't seem to be working)

Spectator:[Spectator client] java.io.IOException:An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host
ClientReceiveThread:[]java.net.SocketException:Connection reset
AWT-EventQueue-4:[Failed to resign game]java.net.SocketException:Connection reset by peer:socket write error
{above line 6 times}
AWT-EventQueue-4:[Failed to request games in progress]java.net.SocketException:Connection reset by peer:socket write error
and then the failed to reign game message again, twice

------------------------------------------------

Had another disconnection, then when i came back and logged back in, my game had been successfully terminated, but i was the only person remaining - no bots any more.

With nothing else to do, I decided to accept the Duel challenge. It seemed to be accepted ok, but no game started. Log says I'm playing today's Duel, but I can do nothing. The game's window hasn't opened.

----------------------------------------------------

This time, I decided to reboot. When returning to Apterous, I was put straight back into my game with the bot. {not sure yet what's happened with my game with duel.)

I've just noticed in between rounds, that the main log reports -
Welcome to aptochat Howard. There are 2 other people here. [there was in fact only 1 other person, beside the four bots]
Howard Somerset is playing Apterous Prune. [that comment is correct]
Howard Somerset left the room. [no I didn't. I'm still there, and i'm still listed as an on-line player]

--------------------------------------------------------

I like the new numbers interface, btw. Yet to try it with a timer, though.

I'm stuck in two games against bots at the moment - when I resume, all I can choose is vowels, there's no "consonants" button, so the round can't start. Strange, as all was working fine an hour ago.

Just the same thing happened with me last night - referred to in an earlier post. I didn't notice the window being any smaller than usual. But should it happen again, I'll try as you suggested.

Not a bug as such, more an inadvertent omission by the looks of it. I just had a game of Goatdown with Matt, and in one round he'd picked 2 vowels and 6 consonants - but wasn't forced to pick a vowel as the final letter.

That's been discussed before. It's OK. I chose 6 vowels against Ben Pugh in Goatdown - I think it's within the rules.

Oh, ok then. Is the rule "minimum 2 vowels/3 consonants", or can the selection be absolutely any combination?

This is a small point, and doesn't affect playability.
When you don't make the target on a numbers round, the solver sometimes says "it's impossible" and then goes on to solve it.
