No Countdown next week :(

Post by Howard Somerset »

I've just checked, and see that Channel 4 is devoted to racing from Goodwood from Tuesday to Friday afternoons next week, and there's no Monday programme either.

Time to catch up with some old tapes, I think.

There should be a healthy glut of Series 49 recaps in the Historical Recaps forum to keep you going for the week.

After the show on Friday, there will be no NEW Countdowns until Monday August 25th.

However, for the week of Monday August 11th, there will be 5 repeat transmissions shown.

Show Jason Cullen vs Nigel Fisher from 7/12/07. I really admired the young Jason's fine annihilation of his opponent after a very even start :D

Thats a bit disappointing. I thought with it being reruns it might've been very old episodes from the 1980's etc.

Hmm interesting, sort of.

I was on holiday last year during David's run so will actually be able to pick up on games I'd missed which works well.

A little, in fact a lot, surprised at the choices. Any reason?

Would have thought repeat finals / old specials / tight high scoring games would have featured???

Well in my mind all along it's been pretty obvious they wouldn't choose one with Whiteley or Lynam for a few reasons. Such as they don't wanna have to pay royalties if they can avoid it, because it's only us that would be more excited by some old finals. I'm just guessing but my instincts say that it would be contractually complex for them to show repeats of episodes with a different presenter.

Also old finals are generally more serious, so while the standard of play is better, it's only us who really appreciates that. Old specials were all presented by Whiteley, and if they show non-sequential episodes (such as a few high-scoring close games) old people will get confused.

This is how I guess it was reasoned.

Two weeks of repeats? Has that happened before in 25 years?

Reading between the lines, looks like Des O'C has left you in the lurch and that the parting was not sweet sorrow. He obviously has already recorded his last programme....

Don't be ridiculous. Its just a coincidence.

Des hasn't obviously recorded his last programme - he's due back in August and we've about another 70 shows to make before the series end.

I don't know what lines you were reading between, but they weren't made of white powder by any chance?

I didn't notice any mention of the four week break at the end of today's programme. Indeed, I think Des said something like "See you next Monday for the next programme."

My point was simply that they didn't seem to know about the four week break in advance. It appears to have been a short notice plan.

When it goes off for the Cheltenham Festival or cricket, this is always mentioned at the end of the last programme before the break.

It's a shame the two weeks haven't been used for repeats of classic games, such as finals and Crucial conundrums. Four weeks effectively without it will have rotted my brain - good job I haven't been in most days.

In the opening post of this thread, I mentioned that the week (which developed into four weeks) without Countdown would give an opportunity to catch up with tapes of some old recordings.

For me that opportunity finishes today, as I'm going to be away until the end of the month. But I have used the three weeks I got in the way I predicted, and have managed to watch many old programmes. Most of these have been from series 57, and it was good to get the chance to see at least two members of this forum during that time. I saw Matthew Green's entire run, closely followed by the only programme I managed to get of Dinos. Thanks both of you for entertaining me during breakfast and lunch during the last few days.

Some of us thought it was to do with Des and Carol quitting and therefore having enough new programmes to see out the year but only if a fortnight was lost along the way. However, we are porbably wrong. Damian intimated that during the two weeks of the Olympics there is no point in trying to compete with the Beeb and it was money down the drain to air new porgrammes.

Good to have Countdown back after a month's break. A bit of a scrappy old game, but I must admit I really enjoyed it. It still seems pretty unreal to me at the moment that Carol is leaving, I must confess...

It's nice to have a gameshow that doesn't focus on General Knowledge questions (though some are okay), but Deal or No Deal does goes over the top and it's way too dramatical.

Did anyone see today's episode? Some ultra flamboyant caricature of a man, sadly all too typical of DOND contestants, went right to the end and amusingly won 50p. Then after the game had finished the banker decided to give him 3800 anyway, just because he had a sob story (dead dad, friend needed to pay off a loan :? which he didnt think too much of when turning down an earlier offer of ten grand)

Does this sort of thing happen often? If I was a previous contestant on the show I'd be mightily pissed off, and also it seems a bit shifty in light of the phonein scandals, although I have no idea of this sort of thing is actually against any rules.

I have an interesting phrase for all of you!

That would be a great way for Des O'Connor to applaud until the cows come home!
