Collaborative crossword writing

Following the success of the Cryptic Crosswords thread in this forum, I thought it might be fun to try to compose a crossword collaboratively. There's a couple of ways this could be run, but I plan to do it this way:
  1. People suggest nice clues that they've composed, for any words of their choice.
  2. I build a grid incorporating those words and fill it out with some other words, hopefully with cryptic potential.
  3. People suggest clues for the other words. Some words might be changed if people have better ideas.
  4. I pick the best clues, influenced by popular opinion.
  5. We find some victims to test it on.
  6. Retire happy.
Stage 1 begins now, so let me have your best ideas. I'll probably move to Stage 2 in a couple of days so don't hang about.

I was going to try and construct an actor/actress themed cryptic crossword based on a few clues I'd made so far, but this idea seems much less time-consuming on my part! That and the fact I'm a bit rubbish and would give up half way through and add it to the list of failures in my life. So here they are: I'm sure you'll get the answers easily enough.

1. Initially a fat actress yes, believe it or not! (3,6)
2. How to eat peanut butter cups (5,11)

Here's some clues that are pretty straightforward:

3. Common cause for blessing (6)
4. Calendar period, to Kirk (8)
5. Poll ball gatherer (6)

Oops should have been (5,11) for no 2. I'll fix that.

I'm struggling. Initially a fat actress yes would imply to me that the first word is Fay. However, the answer must therefore mean "believe it or not". Unless the answer is an actress and the clue is cleverly written. Doing a google search produces Fay Wray as the main actress beginning with "Fay" so I reckon I'm barking up the wrong eucalyptus.

I don't know if we are supposed to post the answers here but as you've half done Number 1, I think the answer is actress Fay Ripley. 'Fay' for the reason you have worked out Kirk and there is a TV programme called Ripley's Believe it or Not hosted by Craig Charles so that'll be the second bit then. Number 2 is stumping me for the moment........................

Spot on Corby senior, well done (and Kirk collaboratively) although I think this clue could be improved with some reference to Cold Feet.

My 2nd clue is a bit vague and rubbish. Maybe I should adjust it:

How the peanut butter cup-maker eats yoghurts (5,11)

Darn thats just too easy!

Here's another one: 6. Front desk has good phone signal (9)

I shall give you a clue to this actress but also reveal the answer in faint font: There is a confectionery called _____'s Peanut Butter Cups (5) and for the surname, how do you eat yoghurt? (11) Reese Witherspoon

Damian E wrote:No takers for my clue then?
I am pretty certain that the first word is FROZEN, but I'm not sure of the second word. I am trying to work out which Iceland you are implying in the clue.

My guess of the first word is coloured just incase people don't want to know it

I'm guessing that Kerrry Kattona is horribly wrong, not to mention incorrectly spelt to make it fit.

To be honest Chris I do tend to miss the obvious stuff . Also actually, I wasn't sure if frozen was right for the first word

I don't believe it - I got FROZEN CHICKEN about 10 minutes after Damian posted it but I didn't post this answer as it seemed so easy. I also don't see how it fits the clue (well at least anything cryptic) as it is indeed a cold bird that you would buy from Iceland. Where's the crypticness?

I make that 7 clues so far although I have no idea about the answers to Jo Bo's. 2 more for the pile. The latter is specialised knowledge. Only a forum member would get it (I think).

8. This programme is also in French, we hear. (3,1,1)

9. We hear her in the church seat. (3,4)

I have reposted the clues below, with the answer hidden next to them.

3. Common cause for blessing (6) SNEEZE
4. Calendar period, to Kirk (8) STARDATE
5. Poll ball gatherer (6) POCKET

I was thinking number 9 was MAE WEST (only female name I can think of that is 3,4) but don't think thats right.

Good to see this thread, here are a few more of questionable amusement.

1. Guy has got one in to cock-sucking (8)
2. Exact cost for Jeffrey's shit book (and what he should have paid the prostitute, perhaps?) (3,1,5,4,3,1,5,4)
3. Not for the faint-hearted? (4,7 [or 4,6 probably works too])
4. Ejaculated and left to note exposed genitalia (5,3)
5. Make sure friend wins the game (9)

Sorry if some of these are saucy ... oh wait ... I am not!

The O.C. is the answer to the first one but you haven't set a clue for the "The" part so maybe the second clue is missing something too?!

Exact cost = not a penny more not a penny less

Jeffrey Archer's shit (they were all shit so this just over-eggs the pudding) book= not a penny more not a penny less

The prostitute reference is just an extra because he claimed he wasn't paying her for sex but was making a philanthropic gesture in court.

My 2nd one is Ben Pugh. We hear suggests we are dealing with sound-alike words:

Her = Hur = Ben. Church seat = Pew = Pugh

I know. Not a great clue. Sorry about not having a clue for the "The". Felt uneasy about that one as well. Do you have any suggestions for the "The" bit?

The only thing I would type is that though your clue for pugh - pew is good the other part is twice removed which is usually a no-no in cryptics. As for the "the" in the first clue I am not sure how I would phrase the clue.

Programme has to help everyone initially and french also, we hear. (3,1,1) Not great Dinos but I am sure you can do better than my effort.
