I have Matt Morrison, Josh Hurst and Eoin Jackson.

Matt because we play together so often and I like to believe are fairly equal.
Josh because he is something to aim at, I used to be very slightly better than him but now he is far superior.
Eoin because he seems about my standard and has a cute name.

What happens when you pick someone as a rival?

I have Ian Dent, Heather Badcock and Michael Wallace.

Ian because we play a lot of games and I need to be better than him.
Heather because I need to be able to instantly check if she's beaten me on the Duel, and thus deny her sex.
Michael because I need to be able to instantly check if he's beaten me on the Duel, and this deny him sex.

I have Jono, Raccoon and Jonathan Wynn because the Rival-o-matic told me too, and if I overruled that I'd basically be disagreeing with myself.

Who else did the ROM suggest?

Do you change it up every week when the ROM gives you new people?

Rather illogically, I suppose, once rivals were available I kept adding people who I played. I hadn't realised that we are limited to just three rivals until I tried to add the fourth. I've not changed any of my rivals since that time, as it's gives me a false sense of confidence when I see that I'm higher placed than any of my three rivals.

When I take it a little more seriously, which no doubt I will soon, I expect to pick at least two of them to be people rated just a little higher than me, which hopefully will encourage me to try to catch them.

I have Howard, Ian and Matthew.

Jack H and Edward McCullagh FWIW

James Robinson because he is closest to me in terms of skill but slightly better.

I personally would say the other way round, but nice of you to think that.

My only rival is Matt Bayfield, based on Charlie's ROM machine.

I chose Jack Hurst, Scott Gillies and Daniel Pati, only for the reason that the finals were coming up and this seemed a handy way of keeping tabs on my rivals!

Eoin Jackson, Harvey Davies and Olly Conway. Eoin because we play quite a few games and although our ratings go over and below each other, we're very evenly matched. Harvey for the same reason although he's stopped playing as much recently. And Olly because he's a friend IRL.

Basically I pick those who are closest to me in terms of skill to try to better myself.

I've already switched mine around a few times but my current three are:

Ian Volante - as Ian said, we play quite a lot and are pretty evenly matched. Also because Ian is awesome.
Ryan Taylor - because we're pretty close in the Duel this month and I want to keep tabs on him. He is also awesome.
Matt Morrison - as I wish to help his insane dream of becoming the most-rivalled player on apterous. Oh yeah and he's pretty awesome too.

Previous (awesome) incumbents have included both Hursts, Innis (but this was too demoralising), Marcus and DO'D. I'm going to keep up the rotation though, it's a great feature.

Kai Laddiman - He's my inspiration
Matthew Tassier - We're quite evenly matched at spoilage but the ratings don't reflect this.
Ian Volante - Has me as rival and again, Spoilage reasons.

I have:

Scott Kenyon, as we used to play a lot, barely ever do now but I can't be bothered removing him;
Robert Pajab, as we are both English under-17 males and we are very even on proranks.
