Stuck on a clue today.

"From this, be let out? I must be mad."

I've tried GANDISEEG, but it doesn't seem to fit.

Matt Morrison wrote:(x,x)?
What emoticon is that supposed to be?

Edit: And before we get the letters, I'm going for INSANE ASYLUM (not that it really makes sense).

An asleep owl with one ear. (Fuck that really works. To me.)

x for eyes means dead, surely? Asleep is like -.-.zZ or some shit.

Edit, wiki reckons (ΘεΘ;) for "asleep because of boredom".

It's clearly an owl that has been pecked to death by Mr Woodpecker (the question mark).

I typed "dead" to start with, but then a) I'm not really down with 'x' just representing dead when it looks more like asleep (I don't prescribe to geek rules, you know that), and then b) in combination with the hook-nosed comma, they do actually look like an owl's sleepy eyes rather than any generic sleepy, or dead, eyes.

Also, his ear is pierced with a diamond stud, like Marcus Hares's nose.

I don't know you but I'm not surprised you read The Times.
Surely you would have expected me to read the Mail or the Telegraph.

Don't let them tell you that he's "only sleeping".

I'm afraid the point of all this is that I thought the answer was obvious! To Countdown aficionados at least. Charlie will know.

He's just had a mad night out and fallen asleep in the gutter - see that cigarette that's dropped from his mouth? That's because it was a WILD NIGHT.

You've seen that One Foot in the Grave moment with the tortoise, yeah? Well this is a lot less funny than that.

Sure you bought the right paper? It's not in my copy. Maybe you were passed off with the Telegraph instead.

edit - Ah, finally found it. I like the way you do crosswords. Wait until the next day when the answer's printed, and then do yesterday's crossword. :)
