Why Million Dollar Password isn't spelled as $1,000,000 Password, for example?!

Golden Balls game show probability theory

Posted: Thu Jul 22, 2010 10:56 am
by Dmitry Goretsky
Let's talk about Bin or Win. There can be 6 killer balls in all: 4 in round 1, 1 in round 2 and 1 in Bin or Win round. There are 6 balls to bin and 5 to win. That means, there's a probability that all killer balls are binned. But first, please go here:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial%20coefficient before I start explaining it
OK, are you back? I'm here. The probability of non-killer win is C(n, 5)/C(11, 5) (n - number of non-killer balls).
But if you don't want to calculate, here's the chart

Code: Select all

Number of killer balls Probability
0 Not possible because of required killer ball in Bin or Win round
1 252/462=6/11
2 126/462=3/11
3 56/462=4/33
4 21/462=1/22
5 6/462=1/77
6 1/462
After one binned and one won ball the probability is C(n, 4)/C(9, 4). Here's the chart.

Code: Select all

Number of killer balls Probability
0 126/126=1 (in all cases) LOL
1 70/126=5/9
2 35/126=7/18
3 15/126=5/42
4 5/126
5 1/126
6 Not possible because only 5 binned balls remain
After two binned and two won balls the probability is C(n, 3)/C(7, 3). Here's the chart.

Code: Select all

Number of killer balls Probability
0 35/35=1 (in all cases) LOL
1 20/35=4/7
2 10/35=2/7
3 4/35
4 1/35
5 Not possible because only 4 binned balls remain
6 See above
After 3 binned and 3 won balls the probability is C(n, 2)/C(5, 2). Here's the chart.

Code: Select all

Number of killer balls Probability
0 10/10=1 (in all cases) LOL
1 6/10=3/5
2 3/10
3 1/10
4 Not possible because only 3 binned balls remain
5 THOSE BALLS AREN'T LOVING ME!! :x
6 6 from 5?! LOLOL
Here goes the final decision: which from remaining 3 balls to win. The probability is C(n, 1)/C(3, 1)=n/3. But if you don't want to calculate this simple formula, I still give you a chart.

Code: Select all

Number of killer balls Probability
0 3/3=1 (in all cases) LOLOLOL
1 2/3
2 1/3
3 THOSE BALLS AREN'T LOVING ME!! :x

Just to help you out Dmitry, $ is a monetary symbol that means "Dollar", and without any other letters is usually taken to mean the American, especially if the statement is of US origin. Similarly, 1,000,000 is a mathematical symbol pertaining to the number one million. In correct English prose one would usually write out the number as a word.

Therefore (and this really is quite simple - I'm surprised you didn't understand it) $1,000,000 and one million Dollars mean the same thing.

Hope that helped.

Большие буквы (The Big Letters), Russian game show

Posted: Tue Aug 10, 2010 10:01 pm
by Dmitry Goretsky
It's a children game show where a team of five 2-3 grade students attempts to beat those REALLY BIG LETTERS.
Gameplay
In all rounds except the final the team tries to earn some of the five letter cubes, or perhaps all five. They have to create a 5-letter word from those letter cubes in 10 seconds. Some cubes may be missing. In this case, they try to guess the letters on them. If they create a word, they earn big letters for later use.
Round 1
The team has to find as much letter cubes as they can from 2000 balls in the pool in 1 minute.
First "!"
The team has to name 10 words beginning with one of the big letters in a given time limit to earn "!".
Round 2
Each player in the team is given one paper sheet. The texts on all sheets are the same, except orphographic mistakes are different, each sheet having ONLY ONE mistake. They then have to correct the mistakes in a given time limit, then in turn declaring the corrections. Each correct correction earns the team a letter cube, but if the player makes another mistake, s/he don't earn the team a letter cube.
Second "!"
The team has to name 15 words ending with one of the big letters in a given time limit.
Round 3
Audience round, usually naming some story characters. This round earn big letter/s IMMEDIATELY if won
Round 4
Each episode has different stunt to complete
Third "!"
The players in turn have to name a word with one of the big letters coctaning twice in a word.
The team won't earn "!" if:
1) the player didn't name a valid word;
2) the player fails to respond in 5 seconds.
Final
The missing letters in a word are marked with "!". There can be 3 or sometimes more "!" in a word
The team has to guess a word in a given time limit, sometimes using their "!" to substitute them for letters if they can
If they solved it, they earn a superprize. If they didn't, they earn a consolation prize. Anyway, the word is revealed
Superfinal
The players should make as many words as they can from the letters in the big word (as in Boggle except no direction restrictions) in 60 seconds and extra 10 seconds for each "!" remaining.
The winner of the round wins a superduperprize and gets to say a word or two (as in Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? or The Weakest Link).
