Which Host Would Be Or Have Been The Best Player?

Hopefully title speaks for itself.
On my end, probably Richard just because of the sheer amount of time he was on the show compared to the other three, though I think Jeff may be getting up there.

Jeff comes out with more DC beaters than anyone else, so I'll pick him. I'm assuming here that other hosts weren't keeping quiet when they saw bigger words.

I get the feeling Richard would probably have been a much better player than he let on, but that's not really based on anything. Probably Jeff.

I voted for Richard, just marginally, because I think they're pretty close on words - Jeff sometimes gives his words before dictionary corner gets the chance to speak, Richard always gave them first go, so that gives Jeff a false impression of having the edge - but I think Richard was that bit sharper with the numbers game sometimes.

I don't think you can really count submissions from the host chair, since they're earpieced up.
Des Lynam was actually a contestant once, and beat Sian Lloyd, which is no mean feat when you consider that Sian has NEVER lost to Kirk.

Maybe not to Kirk, but she did get beaten by a Cheeky Girl.
