Countdown recap for Wednesday 9 June 2010.

C1: Champion Scott Gillies (4 wins, 393 points.) From West Dumbartonshire, Scotland. He works as an HR assistant. He's a big golf fanatic and plays at his local golf club. He's a big fan of Glasgow Rangers, and of the up-and-coming music group, Marina & The Diamonds.
C2: Challenger Fran Speight. From Atherton, Manchester. She works in IT support. She once had a disastrous skiing holiday, when she got concussion while chasing beer bottles that had been dropped by her friend coming out of a supermarket.
DC: Susie Dent and John Inverdale, who reveals that he once was involved in a ski accident himself, when he flew in the sky and the end of his ski got inserted into a certain part of his anatomy. :o
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: Q T O I E A J E M

C1: TEAM (4)
C2: TAME (4)
DC: EMOTE (5) EEJIT (5)
Score: 4–4 (max 5)

Interestingly, that's the first time since Scott has appeared on the show when he has not been in the lead. :ugeek: (Obviously with the exception of the very start of each game.)

Round 2: T P F A E I N D O

C1: ANTIPODE (8)
C2: POINTED (7)
Score: 12–4 (max 13)

A very good darren there by the champ. 8-)

Round 3: P T S A E I E T R

C1: TRAIPSE (7)
C2: TASTIER (7)
DC: ITERATES (8)
OT: TEARIEST (8) TREATIES (8) TREATISE (8) PEATIEST (8) PRETTIES (8)
Score: 19–11 (max 21)

Plenty of 8's around, yet only one is found in the studio.

TREATISE is a formal and systematic exposition in writing of the principles of a subject, generally longer and more detailed than an essay.

Round 4: G W T I O E S T M

C1: MOTTES (6)
C2: MOIST (5)
DC: EGOTISM (7)
OT: EGOTIST (7)
Score: 25–11 (max 28)

A very nice 6 by our champ sees his lead go into double figures.

Round 5: 75, 3, 10, 5, 9, 4. Target: 113.

C1: 113. (5 x 10) + 75 - 9 - 3 (10)
C2: 113. (9 x 4) + 5 - 3 + 75 (10)
Score: 35–21 (max 38)

Hmmm, it looked like Scott was trying to blag his way to the target, but I think we'll let him off this time.

John carries on with his theme of "On This Day In History", by mentioning that the first ever Donald Duck cartoon was printed on this day in 1934. So, happy 76th birthday, Donald Duck. ;) :) :D  8-)

Teatime teaser: HOLYFUSE -> HOUSEFLY

Round 6: N S L A A O E G N

C1: NONAGES (7)
C2: angolas
DC: LASAGNE (7)
OT: ANLAGEN (7) ANNEALS (7) GOANNAS (7) LONGANS (7)
Score: 42–21 (max 45)

A very good 7 by Scott, coupled with the slightly made-up 7 by Fran, sees Scott's score upto double Fran's. And as John says, "There's only one Angola", although not in the World Cup, there isn't.

ANLAGEN (plural of ANLAGE) are embryonic areas capable of forming a structure.
LONGAN is the small, one-seeded, greenish-brown fruit of a large evergreen tree, Euphoria longana, of the soapberry family, native to China and allied to the litchi (or lychee).

Round 7: M S I U I U O Z C

C1: MUSIC (5)
C2: MUCUS (5)
OT: MUCOUS (6)
Score: 47–26 (max 51)

Ooooh, Fran said she was sticking with a safe 5, although we never found out what this mystery word was. Makes you wonder if it was the similarly sounding MUCOUS :?:

Round 8: N D C U E I R T U

C1: inducter
C2: CRUDE (5)
DC: UNDERCUT (8)
Score: 47–31 (max 59)

Ouch, following on from violater on Monday, we get another word this week with the wrong suffix attachment on it. But, Fran only pulls back a small way with her 5.

Round 9: C P E I E R R O X

C1: REPRICE (7)
C2: RECIPE (6)
OT: PIERCER (7)
Score: 54–31 (max 66)

Another dodgy 7 chance by Scott, but this time, it works a charm.

Susie's Origin Of Words tells of the nautical origin of "son of a gun".

Round 10: 25, 100, 1, 6, 5, 4. Target: 367.

C1: 367. ((100 - 1 - 6) x 4) - 5 (10)
C2: 368.
Score: 64–31 (max 76)

More dodgyness from Scott, but he does get the target and has one foot over the line, you'd think.

Teatime teaser: CUPSTAYS -> PUSSYCAT

Round 11: F D A E I L T Y O

C1: FOLIATED (8)
C2: FLOATED (7)
OT: FOETIDLY (8)
Score: 72–31 (max 84)

Another good 8 by Scott sees him pull away further.

Round 12: U O E M D S R O H

C1: MOUSED (6)
C2: MOROSE (6)
DC: MOUSER (6) DORMOUSE (8)
Score: 78–37 (max 92)

And that 6 takes the game, although DC find the brilliant darrenic 8. 8-)

Round 13: N R I E A V G L U

C1: REVALUING (18)
C2: VINEGAR (7)
Score: 96–37 (max 110)

What a way to finish the letters off :!: After missing the 2nd E for REVEALING, I thought the chance of a nine had gone, but thank goodness it was a U that came out. ;) :) :D

Round 14: 75, 3, 1, 4, 9, 9. Target: 224.

C1: 224. ((4 - 1) x 75) - (9 / 9) (10)
C2: 224. (75 x 3) - 1 (10)
Score: 106–47 (max 120)

Well, after the slightly dodgy first 2 numbers games, Scott manages to go a completely unorthodox way round to get 224.

So, if Scott gets the conundrum, he'll have the highest score of the series. Will he do it......

Round 15: H E R D S T E W S

No one buzzes. The answer was SHREWDEST.
Score: 106–47 (max 130)

No.

Instead, Josh Hurst, who happens to be in the audience manages to solve the conundrum.

But, never mind, Scott has got his 5th and is now the carryover champion for the next series, which starts a week on Monday.

I'll be back tomorrow with the first quarter-final, which is No.1 Seed Oliver Garner vs. No.8 Seed Claudia Tyson.

So, prepare for excitement, as the countdown to the grand final enters its final stages.

Till tomorrow, tot ziens tot ziens. (That's Dutch for bye bye.)
