X-Posted from the other thread:

Group D:

Germany 7 - 6 Ghana (1-0)

I (incorrectly) assumed Stuart would have a 6 in round 4, a decision that ultimately cost Ghana a surprise draw :(

Will the 3rd group games be played simultaneously to prevent another West Germany v Austria fiasco in 1982?

Congratulations on being the first result put into the grid. Though not on losing like that.

I'm joining in and flagging up my avatar, great touch.

Group D:

Australia 4 - 4 Ghana

Shocking defending gave Australia an early lead, but Ghana fought back only to let in a freak last minute punt from the halfway line.

Group D:

Ghana 5 - 7 Serbia

The Serbs solid defending proved too much for Ghana to break down, and a couple of superb finishes late on means the Africans' World Cup dream is over almost before it had begun. :(

Group C:

England 6 - USA 6: http://www.apterous.org/viewgame.php?ke ... 9832510898

Fair result, an injury to Rooney after 20 minutes halted the game (computer disconnected), and England missed key chances thereafter.

England, as usual, still confident they can win the tournament, when they realistically have no chance, with stronger opposition in Brazil and Spain.

Pay attention Dent. All explained in the organisational thread. No such thing as a draw as far as apterous is concerned, we're just doing them as draws in the AWC group stages cos it's football-like.

Japan 6 - 5 Denmark

Japan took an early lead but then made a silly defensive error on the stroke of half time letting the Danes back into the game. They were revitalised by the half time oranges and took the lead again late-ish on in the second half. Learning from their first half mistake, they got all 11 men behind the goal for the final fews minutes and the goalie punched away an easy shot in the final minute.

A very enjoyable game with Karen. She was just unlucky with curlies in round 2, and that her strategy of 3 large in her numbers worked in my favour.

Except 1) Deutschland uber alles isn't the German national anthem, and ii) singing it was banned (so presumably you could be arrested for it) for a while, which was the main thing I was trying to point out.

To be honest, it was a game of seven sevenths and a pish-poor performance from the Danes. They missed two sitters handing victory to the more consistent Japanese. Even at this early stage it looks like they'll be heading home in their long-boats without any plunder.
Their only chance of retaining any hope of qualifying is a shock win over the more flamboyant and skillful Cameronians. Incidentally, this game sees the fat, greying Danish goalie John Gillies pitted against his son Scott, the dynamic goal-scoring machine from the mighty Cameroon.
Perhaps one of our more knowledgable football pundits could clarify if this is the first time a father and son have taken part in the same World Cup.

Group E:

James Robinson (Netherlands) 7 - 5 Scott Gillies (Cameroon)

Another enjoyable game. Bit unfortunate that Scott tried fearness so early on, as it might've been much closer otherwise.

James Robinson (Netherlands) 7 - 7 John Gillies (Denmark)

A very tight game with John here. I bottled DOLLIED in round 5, which cost me an outright win there, but never mind.

Although, John didn't actually select the Apterous World Cup option, so is it still a proper legal match :?: :?

Other funny bit in the last numbers, when we were both asked to show our methods for getting ZERO :!:

Cameroonians really struggled with their defending here, an open goal in round one and a terrible effort which is normal of paul le guens teams nowadays! very good play from the like of robben and van persie up front for the netherlands tho.

From the article Michael quoted:

"In November 1991, President Richard von Weizsäcker and Chancellor Helmut Kohl agreed in an exchange of letters to declare the third stanza alone the national anthem of the enlarged republic. On official occasions, Haydn's music is used, and only the third stanza is supposed to be sung. For other uses, all stanzas may be performed."

"In 1945, after the end of World War II, singing Das Lied der Deutschen and other symbols used by Nazi Germany were banned for some time by the Allies."

Nowhere in the article, (or anywhere else I can find), does it mention the singing of the first stanza (Deutschland Uber Alles) being banned by the Germans themselves, unlike in the UK where singing God Save the Queen has been banned by police in some areas because it might upset minority sensibilities, which is what I was (obliquely) referring to.

DUTCHMAN TESTS POSITIVE FOR CANNABIS!

Not content from gaining only one point from the hapless Danes, the obviously stoned Dutch captain (wrongly) accused the Danes of a breach of the rules.

I can confirm that Denmark did indeed select the Apterous World Cup option, and are thus not guilty of any infringements. When asked if he would like to replay the match against a rigorously drug-tested Dutch team, the Danish manager replied, "Not bloody likely! We were lucky enough to fluke a draw the first time."

Now that the cannabis has worn off, it must have switched from Apterous World Cup to Custom, since we went to a conundrum.

Thanks, although I reckon it should be England v Rest of the World, rather than Europe v USA.

While I think about it we could bring back the home internationals on Apterous (or 6 nations)
Although formats for team games sounds like a headache.

I have absolutely no interest in golf.

I could be persuaded to consider Wimbledon, as there won't be any real need to do all the matching-up-players-with-real-participants thing, and no need for all those sexy little fucking fiddly flags.

Also, loving the match reports.

The first game in 'The group of Death' got underway at 2 minutes past 1 this afternoon, with African hopefuls Ivory Coast taking on outsiders North Korea. Despite putting the boot in in the first round, the Koreans fell behind, perhaps ominously suggesting they were only fit to clean the African nation's boots. The Koreans fell a goal further behind in round 4, leaving them quite ENVIOUS of their opponent's firepower. By this late stage in the game it was virtually all over with the Côte d'Ivoire eventually running out 7-5 victors, leaving them in pole position in the group and with a mountain to climb for the Koreans to have any hope of reaching the last 16 with difficult ties against Brazil and Greece, er, i mean Portugal to come.

Ivory Coast manager Jim Bentley was apparantly heard to mutter 'Are you watching Brazil' as he left the desk of play, while Korean manager, Irishman Andy Wilson, has called for a fifa enquiry into the opposition's fans hanging of hundreds of upside down Irish flags in the stadium in a needless display of disrespect.

GROUP A RESULT

France 6 - 5 South Africa: http://apterous.org/viewgame.php?game=253613

A disallowed effort from Thierry 'Timerous' Henry that briefly preceded a South African surge was the only highlight from an otherwise unexciting game. Domenech will be looking for more from his team as they prepare to face off against Uruguay later today.

Mexico 5-2 South Africa

After a belter of a start from the hosts the mighty Mexican warriors manned up and hit back with several quality spots, before both teams publicly shat themselves in the final round. Bring it on, Uruguay.
