He hints at how he did in that article, for those sensitive to spoilers.

Jeff mentioned it on Gillette Soccer Saturday. Apart from Matt Le Tissier, have any other footballers been on the show?

Ex-Norwich City player Adrian Coote was on near the end of the last series.Ben Hunter wrote:Ex-Notts County player Neil McKenzie was on the show during series 59.Sally Taylor wrote:Jeff mentioned it on Gillette Soccer Saturday. P.S. It's Neil MacKenzie, not Neil McKenzie.

Re: Another footballer to appear on Countdown
Jeffrey Burgin claimed to play football to a pretty high standard, and be interested in playing for the Phillippines.
<random info> There are already two London-born players representing the Phillippines at football, brothers Phil and James Younghusband. They qualify through their mother, which was found out about by the country's FA when a fan noticed it while playing one of the Football Manager games. Coincidentally, I found out about it on Wikipedia after signing Phil for my Football Manager team</random info>

Having just read through this thread, it seems that you're the first person to mention his name. It's not really a spoiler is it? Clarke Carlisle. Clarke Carlisle. Re: Another footballer to appear on Countdown
I watched Neil Mackenzie play for Tamworth against AFC Wimbledon. He got subbed just after half-time. Much better at Countdown that football, for sure, and the mighty Wombles won 3-0 (1-0 when he was replaced).

Re: Another footballer to appear on Countdown
Footballing Countdowner, Clarke Carlisle, is going to be a panellist on Question Time when it arrives in Burnley tomorrow night, becoming the first footballer ever to appear on the show. Interestingly, Burnley fan Alastair Campbell is also a panellist.

Re: Another footballer to appear on Countdown
Funnily enough, when I saw the headline 'footballer to appear on Question Time' on the BBC website, Clarke was the first name I thought of. When he was announced as a Countdown contestant I thought it was a gimmick, but he turned out to be pretty good - and I'm sure his episodes had higher viewing figures than usual.
As an aside, I wonder if they've thought about having him on Dictionary Corner? Have any other former contestants ever had that role?
