I think it's supposed to be a reference to the Somalian pirates, who are obviously animals of sorts, and obviously had mainsails on their ships that they used to get to some big tankers.

Yeah, exactly that. I can't imagine how anyone would think that SOMALIAN might be lower case. I know everyone makes mistakes under pressure so maybe he just had no 7 to offer, but it's a strange guess.

I remember once spotting Stavanger (a Norwegian town) early in a letters round, and thereafter finding it impossible to see anything else.

I think Saints signed Egil Ostenstad from Viking Stavanger.

There is "some alien" but that's the US spelling.
