A Poll: Who are your favourite members?
On a positive note and for the sake of balance, let's see which members come out on top. You can vote for up to ten people who you like and/or respect, based on their forum contributions. I was limited to 100 names so if anyone's missing then I'm sorry about that. I think all the regular posters are here, though.

Time to double the popcorn order, but will the bloodsport on the other channel prove more exciting? More interestingly, will any candidate be able to come near the top of both contests, and will blatant public canvassing result in disqualification?

I don't doubt it for a moment. And isn't that a sad reflection of our culture: we take more pleasure in showing our contempt than our appreciation.Brian Moore wrote:... will the bloodsport on the other channel prove more exciting?

I voted for Supee and Richard Brittain, simply because they should have been the only candidates.

I'm not entirely sure that it's merely a cultural thing ... there are bits of our hardwiring which respond in different ways to different stimuli. In the visual field, it's extremely difficult to view 2D shapes as 2D shapes, and I suspect that our hardwiring is programmed to some extent, whatever our intellects tell us, to find visceral excitement in conflict and 'blood on the floor'. Stephen Pinker'sThe Blank Slate is worth reading, if you've got good eyesight or a magnifying glass, and don't fully buy this 'cultural' thing.Alec Rivers wrote:And isn't that a sad reflection of our culture: we take more pleasure in showing our contempt than our appreciation.Brian Moore wrote:... will the bloodsport on the other channel prove more exciting?

Re: A Poll: Who are your favourite members?
Personally I think it should be compulsory to vote for yourself, since otherwise it just punishes the honest voters. But there were too many other awesomers to vote for, so I didn't.
Having narrowed it down to my favourite 15 or so, I then picked the 10 who I thought might actually care. For example I'm sure Jono doesn't give a shit, even though his occasional posts are among my absolute favourites, so I didn't vote for him. But I won't reveal who I did vote for until after the closing date.

Re: A Poll: Who are your favourite members?
Two people have so far voted for someone called Supee Juachan, who has never posted at all. Given Alec's specification of the voting criteria ("people who you like and/or respect, based on their forum contributions") I suppose this could be taken as perfectly valid, on the grounds that someone who signs up to the board, then sees what goes on here and quietly decides not to post thereby probably deserves more respect than the rest of us put together.Phil Makepeace wrote:No posts for two months and only five since February doesn't really suggest activity.Jimmy Gough wrote:You forgot Conor.

Supee deserves to be on any list of great human beings simply for attempting to play apterous while clearly having no grasp of the English language.

Re: A Poll: Who are your favourite members?
Or it could be interpreted as a calculated attempt to demoralise any person who has checked the poll every day since its inception in a vain and futile search for somebody, anybody, to have voted for them, despite the fact that such a result would go against years of experience in internet forum-based popularity contests and life in general.Phil Reynolds wrote:Two people have so far voted for someone called Supee Juachan, who has never posted at all. I have not voted because I realised I could not vote for myself 10 times - and this whole exercise could be pretty degrading for some of us.

Re: A Poll: Who are your favourite members?
With so many people on here, being the 11th person someone thinks of (and therefore not receiving a vote) is surely no disgrace. It's not a particularly scientific poll, anyway. Maybe I should have set the voting limit at 99.John Bosley wrote:... this whole exercise could be pretty degrading for some of us.

If you edit the poll options it resets all the counters. So I wouldn't do that.

Brilliant Alec.... and Sue I think you are getting confused. A Corby trouser press is something that works best in hotel bedrooms where, after you have taken off your clothes, you slip in between two rigid sides and spend several hours with it turned on whilst heat is generated, whereas the Corbys.... no, hang on, I am getting myself confused now...........

I voted for Alec, Damian, Dinos, Howard, Jason, Liam, Martyn, Niall, Philip and Rich.Jon Corby wrote:Who did you vote for, James?James Robinson wrote:P.S. Before anyone asks, I did not vote for myself.
Most were based on contributions, as Alec suggested, but I didn't quite reach 10, so the remaining ones are my favourite Apterites, since I thought it would be a waste not to use 10.
EDIT: I was toying around with a couple of other possibilities, but once I'd picked my 10, there was no going back.

It appears Jason hasn't been around since last Wednesday when
he blamed himself because the forum had reached a stalemate.
Not clear about the problem but he seemed upset.
(He had probably spotted his avatar had been borrowed by another.)
But seriously something was preying on his mind.
Hope he's OK.

The reason I included you with Jon, is I thought the same may have happened to others as happened to me. I chose my favourites, and then found that I had got more than 10 people. Struggling to know who to delete, I eventually deleted the Corby who I thought would get more votes, leaving the other Corby on my list.Chris Corby wrote:I am tied with Jason!
