Spoilers for Monday 5th October

I thought I'd create a spoilers thread for a change. I'm only doing this one as I want to say one thing before it starts:

A VFSMB to the first person who can spot the deliberate mistake on Monday's show. Me and Sid picked up on it in the studio audience and they didn't retake. I hope they don't edit it out either but it will definitely be interesting to watch.

If the mistake was deliberate, why would they even consider a retake? Not being picky, just wondering if you really meant it was deliberate. I never spot these things so I want to be prepared.

Haha. Good point. It wasn't a deliberate mistake, no, just...a mistake. Sorry.

Diff way from Rachel in time
5 x 7 x 25
- (8/4) x 5

I did that - I can't do these split multipications in 30 secs

Has this incident occurred yet, I've only just been able to switch on?

What was the mistake?

So did I - don't know if the mistake has been on - I was just commenting on Damian's general evil demeanour

WEEDILY!!! Quick before Susie says it!

Ooh, she didn't. I win!

Didn't notice - I can't play Countdown, post on here AND observe what's happening on the telly.

Was referring to the contestants, Dictionary Corner, and the presenters :)

Damian already said what had happened at the start of this thread, I just had expected it to be laughed about and then a proper consonant pulled out, that was the surprising bit!
Maybe like Kirk said, it was a deliberate mistake after all...

Is it what Damian said?- one of the E's in the WEEDILY (Ker-ching) round was supposed to be a consonant?

Basically, yes!

Think Tony noticed it though as he looked rather puzzled for a second. By the way Damian, nice scramble for the conundrum ULEVERTON, using Tony's surname in the scramble. I spoke to him afterwards and he said it put him off a bit as he saw his own name but I said that he could have used it to his advantage as he might have already studied stuff like LEVERTON + U = VOLUNTEER and LEVERTON + S = RESOLVENT.

By the way David, I also had WEEDLE and was surprised when it was disallowed - don't know what word we were thinking of. WEEDILY, Sue, is not valid I'm afraid.

I'd blame it on nerves on the day but not noticing it a second time? Crikey. I thought they would cut the round but they never did and of course the audience don't get a chance to say anything straight after any round so it was always going to stay like that.

Round 12 - Lexplorer says DC's word, ALOHAS, is invalid.

Round 14 - Simpler solution: (100 + 9 + 3) × 3 - 50 = 286.

R13: FRIEZES for 7

HALONS?
(50X3)+100+((3+1)x9)=286

Same - when not watching live (i.e. all the time) I always presume any actual beaters I spot will have been got long ago.

Some more equallers/beaters:

Round 2 - STAMPERS
Round 3 - EQUANTS
Round 4 - SPOILED & TOPSIDE
Round 13 - FRIEZES (shame Malcolm beat me to it, but never mind.)

Alternative to 3rd numbers:

3 x 100 = 300

300 - 50 = 250

3 + 1 = 4

4 x 9 = 36

250 + 36 = 286

P.S. If Damian can read this, why was the very first letters game changed? (For those who weren't there, the first letters game was immediately withdrawn, just as the last letter was put on display.)

Have no idea, could be for a number of reasons.
Camera out of focus, mikes not working, contestant only picked 2 vowels...........the end is listless.

It certainly wasn't 2 vowels. I have the selection at home. When I get back I'll put it up for proof. I seemed to think that all was well, but that could just be me.

When you're in the studio, there are some TV's above your head showing what would be shown on screen. Yet, they didn't seem out of focus either.

Did the letters spell out "PENWOMAN" or some other profanity?

Okay, so the camera wasnt out of focus and there were more than 2 vowels.
The list is still endless as to what it could have been. It's not an unusual occurence for us to scrap a round and start again. They were just examples i gave. Could have been someone coughing all the way through it, the tape machine jamming, a studio fly, bad lighting, i really have no recollection. 225 rds in 3 days are recorded. Take your pick. Maybe we just stopped for the sake of it. :?

No, they were just an average mix of letters. There might have even been a possible 9.

Fair enough. I was just showing curiosity. It just seemed odd, since there was nothing too obvious to us in the crowd.

Now I know what happened! As soon as I saw those letters coming up I knew I was going to say "weedle", so out of embarrassment I turned over to the snooker on BBC2 because I couldn't bear to watch it. That's how I missed it second time!

What might have been! I suppose when you lose it's always good to have a list of excuses. Here's mine:
1.) 1st lot of letters being cancelled. I think it may have been a sound problem, probably me mumbling into my shirt. I did have an eight letter word.
2.)Having "tokening" disallowed in the retake of round one. Slightly disappointing because it was the first word I looked up in the 2 volume dictionary I got in my goody bag and it's in there as a noun and token is also listed as a verb .
3.) My brother texted me to say I should have got "plantain" and he's right. Unfortunately because of my Thai connection I have been calling them "GUAY" for the last 20 years.
4.) Asking for a consonant and getting an e!
5.) Did anybody get that second numbers game?

Hey you could have added a sixth reason, due to the conundrum including your opponents surname in the scramble, making it potentially easier for him

Maybe the reshoot was because one of the contestants' mothers had a hearing aid in her pocket which was whistling just loudly enough for the cameras to pick up but not loudly enough to be heard anywhere around. It does happen, I can speak from experience.
