Recap for Friday 19th June. Series 60 Final.

Post by Allan Harmer »

Countdown recap for Friday 19 June 2009.

C1: Champion Jimmy Gough (10 wins, 953 points.)
Jimmy has played with much more assurance in the Finals and looks a worthy challenger to Kirk.
C2: Champion Kirk Bevins (10 wins, 1138 points.)
Kirk has looked in sparkling form during the Finals and justified his place as a Finalist with the stunning spot of ECLAMPSIA in a fraction of a second to defeat nice guy Neil Zussman in a nail-biting Semi Final that would have been worthy of the Final itself.
DC: Susie Dent and Dr Phil Hammond.
Phil Hammond has reinforced why he is my favourite DC guest this week with a sparkling 5-step course on how to become a GP. I expect to be taking the Hippocratic Oath at the end of this episode and collect my hard earned medical degree :D
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

This promises to be a real cracker with two of our finest and most liked apterists competing for the coveted Series 60 Championship. I predicted that Kirk would win by at least 15 points so let’s see how they get on.

Round 1: T E P A N E D E S

C1: DEEPENS (7)
C2: NEPETAS (7)
DC: PEDANTS (7)
OT: DEEPEST (7) STEEPED (7) PENATES (7) PENTADS (7) STANDEE (7) STEEPEN (7)
Score: 7–7 (max 7)
DC reminds us that my co Friday recapper Phil (The Pedant) Reynolds. is in the audience by coming up with PEDANTS. Oh! That reminds me of a darts player with a similar name ;)
Round 2: P L L B A I O E R

C1: PARBOIL (7)
C2: PALLIER (7)
OT: BIPOLAR (7) LIBERAL (7) LOBELIA (7) PLIABLE (7) ROPABLE (7)
Score: 14–14 (max 14)

Round 3: N O L U J A N O T

C1: TALON (5)
C2: NOUNAL (6)
Score: 14–20 (max 20)
After a flat start, Kirk comes up with a great Darren in NOUNAL, which is the adjective derived from NOUN, to break the deadlock.
Round 4: M S R E E A L I S

C1: EMAILERS (8)
C2: EMAILERS (8)
DC: MEASLES (7) MEASLIER (8)
OT: MEASLIER (8) REALISES (8) SERIEMAS (8)
Score: 22–28 (max 28)

Round 5: 9, 5, 4, 3, 6, 75. Target: 240.

C1: 240. 75+5=80x3 (10)
C2: 240. 75+5=80x3 (10)
Score: 32–38 (max 38)

Dr Phil gives us the last part of his 5 easy step course on how to become a GP by teaching us how to deal with an emergency and he enlists the aid of 'Buddy' a dummy to give us a very funny demonstration on how to give CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). n.b. Remember to do it to the tune of The Archers or Nelly The Elephant on speed.

Teatime teaser: SADSOUPS -> SOAPSUDS

Round 6: R Y C O E E N O R

C1: ENCORE (6)
C2: CORONER (7)
DC: CROONER (7)
Score: 32–45 (max 45)
Jimmy slips up and misses the two gettable sevens to give Kirk a double digit lead
Round 7: T I F E G A R I T

C1: FATTIER (7)
C2: FRIGATE (7)
Score: 39–52 (max 52)
Well done to both contestants for covering the only two available word options.
Round 8: T Z D A E U A O G

C1: OUTAGE (6)
C2: OUTAGE (6)
DC: AGATE (5) DOTAGE (6)
OT: DOTAGE (6) GATEAU (6)
Score: 45–58 (max 58)
Jimmy has scored consistently with OUTAGE this series and comes up trumps yet again in a flat round
Round 9: K I W A T E M I P

C1: WAIT (4)
C2: WAPITI (6)
Score: 45–64 (max 64)
Kirk comes up with his second Darren in WAPITI, which is a small deer, and extend his lead to 19, which Jimmy will struggle to peg back.

Susie gives an interesting description of how the term 'Sent to Coventry' originated during the English Civil War.

Round 10: 1, 10, 7, 2, 1, 25. Target: 824.

C1: -
C2: 824. 10+7=17x2=34-1=33x25=825-1 (10)
Score: 45–74 (max 74)
A great numbers spot under pressure to give Kirk what now looks an unassailable lead of 29 points.
Teatime teaser: TOOTEDAT -> TATTOOED

Round 11: T E G A F E T M S

C1: GESTATE (7)
C2: METATES (7)
METATES are stones used for grinding grain in Central America. Dr Phil wins his £100 bet with Susie that it is not a medical term. Kerching!
OT: GAMETES (7) TAGETES (7)
Score: 52–81 (max 81)

Round 12: L H S O I O C A R

C1: COOLISH (7)
C2: SCHOLAR (7)

Score: 59–88 (max 88)

Round 13: S E C I B E V R I

C1: becries
C2: SERVICE (7)
Score: 59–95 (max 95)
Jimmy takes an unsuccessful stab at becries and he cries enough and Kirk can't be beaten now, as he pick up his third Darren with SERVICE to pick up three baseball caps in the game.

Round 14: 6, 9, 100, 50, 25, 75. Target: 133.

C1: -
C2: 134. 50+75+9 (7)
RR: 133. 100+(75/25=3x9)=27+6 (10)
Score: 59–102 (max 105)
Interestingly, Kirk is still on a Max. game but goes for a grandstand finish with four large. However, Kirk is tantalisingly one short. There is a twist in the tail as Jeff comes up with a stunning solution to show us that he is no mug, yet again. Well done Jeff! He self-deprecatingly points out that 'Even the blind squirrel occasionally finds a nut'
Round 15: R O V I N G E R A

No one buzzes. The answer was GRANIVORE.
Damian finds a Conundrum worthy of the Final to leave Kirk (along with most of the rest of us) looking totally bemused.
A GRANIVORE is an animal that feeds on grain.
Score: 59–102 (max 115)
So Kirk becomes Champion and he gives a very relieved little pump of the fists to help ease the tension and come to terms with a job well done.

We get a nice montage of Kirk's finest words and funny moments followed by the presentation of the trophy and the Oxford Dictionaries to Kirk. I am so pleased that Jimmy gets a nice cheque for a thousand quid. However, I am sure that Kirk would not swap it for the small silver cup that will always remind him of his series victory.

Many congratulations to Kirk for a record-breaking Octochamp run and a highly entertaining series win, which was greatly deserved.
Commiserations to Jimmy, who gave a splendid display throughout the series and he was in no way no disgraced by being beaten by the 'Kirkulator' in this form.

Thanks to both contestants for an enthralling Final and it has been a great privilege to recap this epic victory by Kirk.
