Co:Lon - 26 August 2023

Post by Thomas Cappleman »

The key details
Host: Ruth Cappleman
Venue: St Andrew's Church Centre, Southgate
Doors open: 11am for an 11.30am start
Finishes by: 6pm
Cost: £10, payable by PayPal (paypal.me/ruthcappleman/10GBP) - please please remember to select the “Friends and Family” option

What to expect
There will be three rounds played at tables of three - you play two matches and host the third, using packs of cards with letters and numbers on. By the end of the day, you’ll have played six games. Each game is 9 rounds long: three letters, one numbers, three letters, one numbers, and a conundrum.
The first round is drawn randomly, but don’t worry if you have a bumpy start – for the second and third rounds you will be playing opponents that have scored similarly to you, so everyone should get some good, well matched games. The aim is to have fun, and there will be plenty of prizes on offer. The top two players after six games will face off in the Grand Final.

Rough timetable for the day
11:00 - Doors open
11:30 - Welcome; announcement of draw for Round 1
11:45 - Round 1
13:00 - Lunch (bring your own, or pop to the nearby shops)
14:00 - Round 2
15:15 - Round 3
16:45 - Grand Final
17:15 - Prizegiving and tidy up

Accommodation
There’s a Premier Inn 0.4 miles from the venue, and a Travelodge 0.8 miles away.

Public transport
The venue is a 5-minute walk from Southgate tube station (near the end of the Piccadilly Line).
If you’re coming from north of London, the best option is likely to be to get a train to Palmers Green, as it avoids the need to go into central London. There are very frequent buses from Palmers Green to Southgate (or it’s a 35-minute walk).
Coming by car?
The venue is a 10-minute drive from junction 24 of the M25. At the time of the event, it will still be outside the Ultra Low Emission Zone.
There is no parking at the venue, but there are nearby residential streets without parking restrictions.

Afterwards
We’ll book a meal (almost certainly Italian) for those interested after the event on Saturday. There are also lots of independent and chain restaurants in the area around Southgate station, so plenty of options for those around on Friday evening as well.

Attending or organising a FOCAL event is subject to the FOCAL Code of Conduct. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult. Please note your name will be added to the attendees list here and on the c4c forum. If you would prefer for this not to happen, please let us know when you sign up.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask!

I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but Grovelands and Oak Hill parkruns are both about a mile away. Southgate station is nearer to Grovelands though so that might work as a tie-break.

Up to 27 sign ups now.

We'll be booking a meal for afterwards (hopefully either at Fantozzi, a nearby Italian, or Pizza Express). If you've not expressed interest on the Facebook post and would like to join for the meal, let me know.

I'm considering signing up for this and if I do I'd be up for the meal. Is there a deadline (for either)?

Do you know which letters sets will be in use? If it's the Board Game sets, do you know when you'll have them from?
Adam Beach wrote: Wed Aug 09, 2023 12:03 am The consistency in the letter packs was because I sat down and sorted through every one of them in the weeks beforehand and gave them equal distribution (yes, I'm sad). I kid you not, one of the packs had 4 Ks in before doing this. I'm all for fairness and everyone playing with the same quantities to alleviate any "advantages".
I''d be keen to help out to try and do this to the BG sets if we have them with enough time before the event.

(Adam's post is from the CoBrum topic about the customer printed sets that Callum made a while back)

I won't have time to do the parkrun unfortunately, but I'm not on a massive parkrun streak so I can take the hit.

I'm staying the night in Finchley. The only parkrun where I can feasibly go from accommodation --> parkrun --> accommodation for shower --> event by 11:30 is Sunny Hill parkrun. So I will be doing that one. (And declare it the official one if no-one else says anything...)

I'm most likely doing dollis hill parkrun (Gladstone apparently) because it's the nearest to my crappy budget hostel. 500 points each if nobody else joins us I guess

Who else is doing mso? I'm signed up (unless I'm not in which case Tony please yell at me)
