Co:Brighton - 13 May 2023

Post by Fiona T »

Lesley and I are delighted to announce the return of Co:Brighton for 2023

When is it?

13 May 2023. Doors will open at 11:30, with the first round draw taking place shortly after. Please arrive by 11:45.

Where is it?

Lewes Road United Reformed Church, a 20 minute walk from Brighton station.

Map

Brighton is an hour from London Victoria by train, or 25 minutes from Gatwick Airport

The venue is wheelchair accessible, and there is parking available.

What will I be doing?

You will play six 9-round games of Countdown in the 'Lincoln' style of tournament. After six games, the top two players will face each other in the grand final.

The first round is drawn randomly, but don't worry if you have a bumpy start - for the second and third rounds you will be playing opponents that have scored similarly to you, so everyone should get some good, well matched games. The aim is to have fun, and there will be plenty of prizes on offer.

What about lunch?

You can bring a packed lunch, or there are plenty of local shops. Tea and coffee will be available at the venue.

And after?

There's plenty to do in Brighton on a Saturday night. More details soon.

I'm in - what do I do?

The entry fee is £10. We would prefer you to pay via Paypal https://www.paypal.me/FionaTitcombe/10GBP. If you can't pay via paypal, then please contact Lesley or Fiona to make alternative arrangements. Please ensure you select the family and friends option.

Please note your name will be added to the attendees list below and on facebook. If you would prefer for this not to happen, please let us know when you sign up.

Any questions, please contact Lesley or Fiona, and we'll do our best to help.

We look forward to seeing you there!

I am sorely tempted as it is my weekend off.
What time is it likely to finish?

Should be done before 6 (probably earlier - think we kicked off the final at about 5 last year)

**** IMPORTANT ****

When paying via paypal, please ensure you select the family and friends option. Paypal charge a massive fee otherwise which will impact our ability to put on a good event - I'd rather the money went on prizes and goodies than paypal's pockets!

I won't be able to make this one - it's the date of cricket fixtures I've already been double-booked for AND it's the date of the Eurovision Song Contest which I'm hoping to go to as well...

Fiona, there is an opportunity to combine the event with a Eurovision watch party afterwards 😊.
There must be somewhere in Brighton showing it

My accommodation is about 45 minutes walking distance from the event and 15 from the station, anybody have any ideas of accommodation which is nearer to both?
No worries if not.

Yep - there's a couple of other big screen events

https://www.onegardenbrighton.com/explo ... 2023-live/ - tickets a tenner (+ annoying booking fee) and include a drink

https://www.visitbrighton.com/whats-on/ ... y-p2170261 - tickets £25 (can't see where to actually buy them)

Suspect these are both outdoors, so might be in the hands of the weather gods

Unrelated to the train strikes, I cannot go after all.
It would seem my partner and my in laws have booked a ferry to Bruges for my birthday, I thought it was going to be week later.
With Fiona permission I would like to offer my entrance to anyone who wants to take my place.
Either way I don't want a refund but I'm determined to attend a Co-event later in the year

If anyone happens to be driving down from somewhere in the Midlands then I'd be very appreciative of a lift (and would pay for petrol!)

Thanks to everyone who came along today. Fortunately the rail strikes didn't have as bad an impact as initially feared, and we had 30 players (29 for round two - long story!) enjoying the day at Brighton.

Once again we were lucky to have Paul Zenon come along to present the prizes, and help re-create the board game box picture with Sandie Simonis and Louis Freedman. :)

Recreating the picture on the box of the classic board game with Louis and Sandie. Paul said it was the first time he's been asked to pretend to be a Conservative politician! Love the effort he made with his t-shirt as a nod to the original!

Just a minor admin note for co:event finals. I think going forward if it's a crucial we need to remember to always have somebody (with a good camera phone) recording the contestants hands for buzzes.

No damage done on Saturday (I didn't event buzz), but if you watch the YouTube video back you'll see none of the hosts (nor the video) looking at the players, and it caused a bit of awkward confusion...

I was wondering what the hell the confusion was about, but I think regardless everything went pretty smooth.

In terms of filming, I think filming from behind the contestants might be the better case; helps get everything in shot. I will say I don't know what the real standard is for revealing conundrums as I've seen 3 entirely different ways that may all need a bit of work because they need to sync up well to the clock or they don't get revealed that quick. However, that's coming from the side of me that gets very pedantic about that stuff so in all honesty the current methods we have worked so far since there hasn't been any big complaints from them.

I think there needs to be more of these full final games filmed and a better way of filming them smoothly. It can still be on the phone but I can offer in saying that there are good phone holders that use gimbals for stabilization and there's probably some remote control operated ones to move left and right. That's all I can say for improvement but so far with what we've got, it does the job for the most part.
