Re: Birthdays
Thanks for all the birthday greetings!
I got breakfast in bed from my daughter, including a toasted bacon sandwich, cards and pressies, and littlest one singing 'Happy Birthday'!
My kids are great!
However, my daughter will be 21 next year, so I'm a bit older than that!

I think the meaning Kirk is trying to convey in his confusing predatory rhetoric (I think its confusingness is why Kirk doesn't have much success with women, despite being great at darts) is that if the progeny is anything like the parentage, he'd like to wed your daughter.Kirk Bevins wrote:Doesn't matter.Julie T wrote:Eh??? ???Kirk Bevins wrote: Happy birthday Julie.

Can that please be enough speculation about my daughter, thank you?
I'm definitely bringing my eldest son rather than her with me to CoLin!

Thanks for the birthday wishes for Henry - yes, he is great, Jason!
There's a special Star Wars Day at Legoland tomorrow, with fireworks at the end, which I'm taking him to with a friend of his, as a birthday treat.

Most years I get annual passes for the group theme parks through Tesco Clubcard Deals, so we go quite often to this sort of thing. I've never known the traffic so bad. And I've been there on days when the park was much busier. I guess everyone was leaving at once after the fireworks. The rides re-opened, but probably because it had started raining, most people wanted to leave then, like us.
Great day, though, yeah? Did you enjoy it? Henry and his friend got lots of pics taken with Star Wars characters, the queues for the rides weren't too bad (just as well, since Henry isn't used to queueing as we usually go with his disabled brother), the rain held off for most of the time we were there, and the fireworks were spectacular!

Re: Birthdays
Yeah it was good, except it got so rammed up where we were that I had to lift my two kids up so they could see for the entire duration of the fireworks. I spent most of the display willing them to end!Julie T wrote:Great day, though, yeah? Did you enjoy it? Ha, I'm only doing this because Paul's so good. It's like Phil Taylor says - he can't afford to only practise for 4 hours a day if Barney is practising 6 hours a day. If the standard was rubbish I might not practise so hard but I know there are some quality players out there and I have to work hard to beat them.David O'Donnell wrote:Rank Type Player Rating Wins GamesKirk Bevins wrote:Happy birthday Paul mate. Aw, don't put it like that, it sounds depressingly old. It may not be the best way of confronting my mortality, but I'm still hoping genetical scienticians will find a way for us to live healthily for hundreds of years, dire sociological implications be damned. They'd better hurry up too. For now though, I still have a full head of hair and the ability to consume a decent amount of booze without suffering an ebola-like hangover, so I'm happy enough.Julie T wrote:Happy Birthday, Paul Howe, and congratulations on reaching your quarter century!
Kirk, I think there are far more efficient ways of practising than simply playing countdown, so in the sense that I define it I haven't practised in over two years. Enjoying the occasional leisurely game of countdown is how I prefer to think of it.

Go on - name me some.Paul Howe wrote: Kirk, I think there are far more efficient ways of practising than simply playing countdown,
Re: Birthdays
1. Make list of about 50 words you're not capable of spotting more or less instantly.Kirk Bevins wrote:Go on - name me some.Paul Howe wrote: Kirk, I think there are far more efficient ways of practising than simply playing countdown,
2. For each word, spend 5-10 seconds turning it into various anagrams in your head: e.g. for NEURITIS you can make ruiniest, turinise, unsitier, whatever. They don't have to make sense, just force you to spend a few moments contemplating the word, trigger associations when the letters come up, and practise the mental process of anagramming. You can do stems like NUTSIER + I instead if you prefer but I find this slows everything down. Also if you have some spare time e.g. a daily train commute, this is an excellent thing to fill it with.
3. Bash the list into jumbletime, and solve it 4 or 5 times. After the 5th time you should be able to get 100% or close to it. At the time you couldn't do custom lists on anahack, I don't know if this has changed.
4. Repeat step 1 again, going through the list manually and spending a few seconds jumbling each word up in your head.
Go through this again a couple of days later, and then for each list once every 2 or 3 weeks or so, and you'll improve very quickly. Aside from the one off cost of making the lists, the above should take about 30-40 minutes.
At some point I'll put my lists of difficult to spot 8's and 9's using high probability letters on here as a learning resource.
