For some reason, this episode is already on All4.

Already available on All4 if you want to watch it in advance, but today's episode sees former contestant Jodine Lawrence from Brum take on Loughborough Uni Maths + Stats student Samuel Williams. Both playing for a game against current champ's chair contestant Adele on Monday.

Very coincidence that two threads for this came up almost simultaneously.

Ah, so this IS part of the regular series, but determines who plays the following series. Interesting.

Also a bit weird that it was a formerly winning returnee vs. a new person IMO.

Wonder whether or not they’ll now put all the episodes on All4 before airing, like some programmes do these days.

I didn’t expect this episode to change both contestants and have it determine who will play the following episode.

Anyway, I thought the whole show was handled very professionally, and I’m gonna say this: Sir Trevor McDonald is the best presenter.

Great to see Jodine back. I had the pleasure of meeting her in the green room during filming day of the Series 78/79 carryover.

Is Jodine the first person to appear in a normal series on 3 separate occasions? (not counting people carrying forward from one series to the next). There certainly can't be many others, albeit her circumstances are somewhat different - I presume she was invited back for this episode specially, rather than reapplying.

No, Mick Purdie did this in Series 78, but I believe Jodine may be the first person to have two winning runs + one losing run.

Yeah thought it was great, given that they were all brand new to it. Loved Anne-Marie writing in the squares

Could well see Anne-Marie being Rachel's maternity cover...Trevor was good- his presenting style reminded me of when Nick was at the helm. Enjoyed Lemn's OOL section and found Marverine to be engaging. Good job all.

I enjoyed the change from the usual shitey adverts during the breaks.

I thought this was a great episode too, good job by everyone.

Anne-Marie's job is the most hands on and it probably takes a little while to get in the swing of things - getting the numbers out quickly while everyone's watching you without being self-conscious about it etc. - so I wouldn't really judge her too harshly.

Not sure if I've shared this story on here before. In Belfast (and the surrounding area) how you say that letter aitch/haitch, is often used as a certain signifier. In the 80s (apparently) people would be stopped and asked to say the alphabet.

I taught in a school in which the majority of pupils said one particular version. Teaching maths, I often used the letter in examples etc. I just decided from the off to use the version that the majority of pupils used.

Every so often however I would drop in the other version. You would very often see the pupils glancing round at eachother, like I'd sworn in the middle of trigonometry or something.

Yes, I remember the discussion, and it was that discussion that I was alluding to and was connected to the "joke".
