I think I fixed it. At least, I can't make it happen to me any more. Unfortunately it may have broken some other stuff, so this probably isn't the end of the story.

Whilst I was having problems getting the game to work for me (I think I was using the wrong version of Java), I entered a number of games which I had to adandon. Now there is a list of five games marked "adjourned" which makes me look like a splitter. Is there any way these can be cleared now that I seem to have sorted the problem?

Alternatively, If Harry and Eoin want to resume the games sometime...
