Susie made a brief mention of the "I before E except after C" "rule", giving "forfeit" and "glacier" among words that break the rule.

I was taught that the rule applies only when the "ie" or "ei" has an "ee" sound, meaning that "forfeit" doesn't break the rule. Though this is debatable, it amazes me how many people have never heard of any version other than that it doesn't depend on pronunication at all.

But I'm convinced that, in "glacier", the "i" and "e" are pronounced separately. The rule relates to the digraphs "ie" and "ei". When the letters aren't forming a digraph, naturally the letter that comes first is the one that is pronounced first.
