Yes, I think you're right. Well spotted. Though I can't work out the way you use brackets, or has maths changed the way it does it now? I don't find your method very intuitive. Mind you, I can't even get the old method down properly!

You do whatever is in the brackets first (BIDMAS), so your method I would write my next line down as:
(500-3) x 5
My next line would then be:
497 x 5, which is obviously not what you meant.

With my method, I would start with the brackets: 100-75/25

Now, in maths, we don't read from left to right necessarily - we apply BIDMAS so do the division first, so our next line is 100-3. This is 97. Then it reads 97x5.
