That used to be valid, but I'm afraid it's been removed (PAINTY must not be specified) -- have tried it multiple times before on Apto!
Apto is the place to practise!Cathy Summerside wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2019 4:39 am Thanks Johnny - I checked 'PAINTY' on https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/ but I'm not on Apto (yet! - I'm going to keep practising first!)
So you're saying that for PAINTIEST to be valid, PAINTY must Not be specified? Just checking.....Johnny Canuck wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2019 1:39 amThat used to be valid, but I'm afraid it's been removed (PAINTY must not be specified) -- have tried it multiple times before on Apto!
MICROXEA in the COMRADE/EXORDIA round, though I still prefer the full-sized xeas.
It's not that simple. e.g. girly is allowed, girliest is not. If you look at the examples in the OED it might make sense. My interpretation is PAINTY = paintlike.Philip Wilson wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2019 8:15 pmSo you're saying that for PAINTIEST to be valid, PAINTY must Not be specified? Ah right, thanks Fiona. Fwiw I'm using the same dictionary as the one linked in Cathy's post. The examples shown there suggest paintiest would have a meaning - fingers etc.Fiona T wrote: ↑Sat Jun 08, 2019 9:15 pmIt's not that simple. e.g. girly is allowed, girliest is not. Sounds good to me Cathy, lol. Susie would say it's not used enough, I guess.Cathy Summerside wrote: ↑Sun Jun 09, 2019 10:15 am Yes, that's where I was going with it, Philip - having had toddlers with 'painty' fingers there could be a competition for who had the 'paintiest' Thanks, Fiona
Thanks for the clarification, Tony.Tony Atkins wrote: ↑Tue Jun 11, 2019 2:11 pm Painty is specified. Paintiest or paintier is not. The rule is that single syllable adjectives can be changed to -er or -est
without them being specified. Unfortunately painty is not single syllable. I came unstuck online recently with unfairest for the same reason.
