Countdown in London (CO:LON) 2019 - Saturday 11th May 2019
If you were at CO:LON in 2017 or 2018, you may have noticed some little extras to enhance your experience. We’re talking individually rhinestoned goody bags, glow-in-the-dark aubergine badges, a proliferation of prizes, and GIFs or drawings to accompany people’s sign-ups.
Not this year. This year, we’re stripping back.
Fear not, everyone will remain fully clothed (and anyone who tries to strip off will be banned for life). But the embellishments of the past 2 years will be reined in. No longer will you leave the venue with your pockets weighed down by tat, or feel offended by my piss-poor portrait of you.
What does that leave? It leaves the classic Co-event experience: Countdown, trophies and prizes for the most notable achievements, and a 6pm exodus for the nearest pub with a dartboard.
....and some Chuck Tingle books.
When?
Saturday 11th May 2019. Vague timings will be posted below.
Where?
The Christian Street Community Hub, on Christian Street. Unlike last year, it’s now correctly listed on Google Maps! (Anthony Endsor, you have no excuse.)
It’s about 5 minutes from Shadwell DLR/Overground station, or walkable from Liverpool Street. If you’re unfamiliar or uneasy with getting the tube, post below – your route and timings will almost certainly overlap with other people’s, so they can accompany you safely to the venue.
What?
Six 9-round games of Countdown in the ‘Lincoln/Edinburgh’ style of tournament, where you play in small groups. The top 2 players after 6 games will play each other in the grand final.
[Edinburgh style is briefly explained here: https://focalcountdown.co.uk/how-do-events-work-2/ . Please contact FOCAL for more information.]
How much?
Entry will be £10 per person. Payment should be made through PayPal to Jen at this link: https://www.paypal.me/CoLon2/10. If you don’t have PayPal, a bank transfer can be arranged - please contact me to arrange this.
The event is not-for-profit; your fee pays for venue hire, trophies, prizes and sundries. Food isn’t included, but the venue may organise a pop-up café on site to sell sandwiches, drinks and snacks – however, there are plenty of food options in the local area.
Where to stay?
There are plenty of hotels in London (obviously), but the likes of Travelodge, EasyHotel and Premier Inn will be the cheapest options. Hostels and AirBnBs are another option - you are strongly advised to book AirBnBs that already have reviews and positive ratings, to avoid being conned.
If you’re nervous about London transport, I would strongly recommend that you book a central hotel rather than somewhere in Morden, Walthamstow, or – God forbid – Luton.
Why should I go?
This event has been endorsed by Graeme Cole, which is like a 5 Michelin star rating.

Re: Countdown in London (CO:LON) 2019 - Saturday 11th May 2019
***It is EXACTLY one month until CO:LON 2019! Please read on for more details about the event... Otherwise you might get a surprise on the day.***
SIGN-UPS
Firstly, we are currently on 52 signed up, so 20 spaces remain. For budgetary reasons*, if you know you can make it, it would be really helpful if you could pay up sooner rather than later; if you can't pay up riiight now but are DEFINITELY coming then let me know so I have a better idea of numbers and can order stuff without overspending
CONUNDRUMS
This year's conundrums will be a mix of 8s, 9s and 10s.
Why? I don't like to make unnecessary tweaks to formats, so I really sincerely apologise if it's a tweak that concerns you. But this gives me a wider pool of 'real word' conundrums that can be well-scrambled, gives you a little bit more of a challenge without giving you impossible words or ones that have been recycled dozens of times at events, and tbh makes planning the event significantly less miserable for me. I really hate writing conundrums.
Please don't be too irked - doing this makes it more likely that London 2020 will happen!
PRIZES
Prize-winning categories will be:
- 1st/2nd/3rd place
- Wooden spoon
- Best new player
- Most improved player
- Rudest word
- Best dressed #FashionWatch2k19
There may be a small commemoration for anyone who makes a proper effort with their outfit. A *proper* effort.
AFTER-PARTY
All being well, we will be revisiting the The Brown Bear pub (location here), a 7-minute walk from the venue - or 8 if you're feeling exotic - and just down the road from Aldgate East. It has a dartboard, a jukebox and more alcohol than you can shake a stick at.
Think that's all. If you have any questions, or need a buddy for travelling across London, please let me know. And sign the fuck up! x

No. If there's a consensus after the event that the conundrum format would have benefited from this (or was just pure shite) then I'll reconsider for potential future events, but I think this is the right approach for now - after all, the aim is to unscramble the letters in front of you.Bradley Horrocks wrote: ↑Sun Apr 14, 2019 4:20 pmInteresting - will we know the length beforehand?Jennifer Steadman wrote: ↑Thu Apr 11, 2019 9:51 pm CONUNDRUMS

(As usual, there will be no plurals, proper nouns or answers with multiple answers.)

It looks as though the Southwark parkrun is the one to do in the morning before CO:LON. Me and Fiona T should be there. Anyone else?

If there was a simple numbers game (e.g, 100 1 6 5 4 9 - 105), would it be possible to stop the timer early due to it's easiness?

But yes, to answer the question seriously, rounds are very regularly ended early, if an easy numbers or very common nine comes up.

***IMPORTANT TRAVEL INFORMATION - PLEASE READ***
Due to Tube engineering works, it looks like Aldgate East might be an absolute arse to get to on Saturday. So I would STRONGLY RECOMMEND trying to divert via Shadwell.
Shadwell is on the Overground and the DLR but if you're not au fait with London transport then follow this guide because the Overground is a labyrinth:
- If you are coming into EUSTON, ST PANCRAS or KINGS CROSS, go south on the Northern line to Bank, then change to the DLR to get to Shadwell.
- If you are coming into WATERLOO or LONDON BRIDGE, get the Jubilee line east to Canada Water and then change to the Overground to get to Shadwell.
- If you are coming into LIVERPOOL STREET or FENCHURCH STREET, save yourself the hassle and walk. It's about 20 mins.
- Apologies to anyone coming from PADDINGTON or MARYLEBONE: not the best journey as you'll have to go south on Bakerloo to Oxford Circus, then east on the Central like to Bank, then onto the DLR to Shadwell.
- VICTORIA? Go north on Victoria line to Oxford Circus, then east on the Central like to Bank, then onto the DLR to Shadwell.
- BLACKFRIARS or CANNON STREET: wall to Bank and get the DLR to Shadwell.
- If you're one of the bizarre people who enjoys exercise (???) before a Co-event (????????????) and are therefore attending the Mile End parkrun that Gevin is trying to make a thing, you'll probably be walking 40 minutes from there to the venue - the Central line to Liverpool Street or Bethnal Green might shear 10 minutes off your journey, but it's still an interesting diversion.
Any relevant questions?
