Plenty at stake today. A win for John gives him a place in the finals - it would take eight more games to push him out of the top eight, and there are only seven more preliminaries left after today. Even if he loses with a score of 99 or more, he gets on the leaderboard, with a chance of a final place.

Ian John in the preamble! Surely, Des should've said Ian St John.

I hope John does it, he will surely illuminate the finals with his positive glow.

(Des claims not to know what a STANDPIPE is. Must have seen them during the war, surely.)

Ha, best bit of sarcasm ever there. I couldn't believe how much I got in to today's game - I really wanted the challenger to win. It was a delight to watch her enjoying the show and it's about time we saw someone who looks like they're enjoying themself. Even when subtle (or not so) hints were dropped to John, he barely raised a frown.

Regularly failed to look up when being spoken to, or talking himself. I think he may have some "issues".

Shame that DAPPIEST wasn't allowed in round 3, since I got that too! ;)
I also had NAPPIEST, which is allowed, although not as good as Susie's STANDPIPE, obviously.
DAPPY as an adjective does exist, although not in the OED2r unfortunately:
