Why would you think they were faces?
There was a previous discussion about what Monster Munch are supposed to be, but unfortunately it seems to rely on images that aren't up any more. But there is this article. And this. But they'd be the whole monster, not just the face. I can't see them as a face at all.

One of the "other" sides of the cheese grater can be used to generate cheese slices.

(Yes, I really hadn't realised that.)

When people refer to The Plough as The Big Dipper, it's not because it looks like a fairground ride. It's because it looks like:

I read that the other day and wasn't sure if I'd heard that before or not. I think I even considered this thread.

The Mirror of Erised in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is so named because it shows one's desire, and Erised is Desire backwards (like a mirror image).

Is this a joke? If you've read the book or seen the film, it tells you anyway. Otherwise you wouldn't give a shit.

Yeah turns out it is more or less in the book. Had a little search and turns out the mirror is inscribed with "Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi", so not exactly subtle but disguised enough to pass as some nonsense magical language to my seven-year old self at the time of reading. No idea about the film, I've seen it but the films made little impression on me.

There's an original Poldark. Not that I've watched either, but I found out because the main guy in the original series was in an episode of Fawlty Towers, and when they repeated it recently, I looked up some of the random people that appeared in it.

Just took mine off to have a look, and then realised they weren't reading glasses, as I'm short not long sighted. SMH.

The question is, without your reading glasses, how would you read what they say? Does everyone who has reading glasses need two pairs so that you can read what the other say?

Been listening to Radio 2. Was a bit confused to hear an interview with Gilbert and Sullivan, and they were playing a load of music that didn't sound like the normal operettas.

Turns out, it's Gilbert O'Sullivan and he is an entirely different (and crucially, living) artist.

Never give money to charity. I've worked in the charity sector for a few years now and having seen what goes on I would never give them money. If you want to help society, pay your taxes and encourage everyone to pay their taxes and encourage politicians to make millionaires and billionaires pay their taxes. The fact that charities exist is another failure of capitalism and they are more often used to launder money, fund executive salaries and evade tax than to help anyone.

This seems a bit too sweeping a statement for me. Are you saying there are no charities worth giving to?

Are you aware of charity effectiveness evaluators such as GiveWell?

Do you think, say, £20 given to the Against Malaria Foundation does less good than £20 given to HMRC?

Yeah, probably overly sweeping. And obviously current governments are horrible and spend our taxes inefficiently or immorally but I would still prefer to pay higher taxes if I knew they were being spent on providing for everybody's needs and improving society rather than give money to charity that is oftentimes subsidised by taxes anyway and pays exorbitant salaries to its CEO and upper management. I guess you could say politicians get exorbitant salaries too and governments can be just as corrupt as a badly managed charity but at least you have a vote to change the government.

In tight spaces, Allen keys should sometimes be held shorty-longy and other times longy-shorty depending on the space. I was always holding them longy-shorty and accepting that I could only do about three quarters of a turn (then remove and repeat) before hitting the side of the thing I was assembling. Sometimes still have to do that but only in very tight spaces. Much prefer using a screwdriver though.

You can buy Allen key bits that fit in a drill or appropriate screwdriver.
You do pet more purchase using an Allen key the conventional way

I'm sure everyone knows this but I only just twigged...

If you've got a multiple of 11, then you can reverse the sum -

so 77 x 9 = 99 x 7 , 44 x 3 = 33 x 4 etc etc...

Whole new number skillz unleashed!

If a=b/c, then c=b/a. Saved my neck on a couple of exams where I otherwise might have run out of time.
I'm not dead yet. In a rut right now because of stress from work. I'll be back later in S89. I also plan to bring back the Mastergram - if I can find a way to run a timer or clock through pure MediaWiki without having to upload to Vimeo every time.

yeah it's like the x% of y = y% of x thing - very obvious when you think about it, but took someone to point it out!
