Countdown recap for Tuesday 27 October 2015.

RSI is fucking my hands again so there will not be much commentary on this, except to say that today's challenger Andrew is quite cute.

Round 1: T T C A V O R I E

Zac: COVERT (6)
Andrew: COVERT (6)
DC: VICTOR (6) COTTIER (7) ROTATIVE (8)
OT: TRACTIVE (8)
Score: 6–6 (max 8)

2 covert 8s hiding in the selection, neither especially obvious.

Round 2: P O A S D M I R E

Zac: PRIMED (6)
Andrew: PROMISED (8)
DC: PARODIES (8)
OT: DIASPORE (8)
Score: 6–14 (max 16)

A deceitfully 9y selection.

Round 3: 25, 4, 6, 1, 7, 10. Target: 990.

Zac: 988. 4 x 10 x 25 - 7 - 6 + 1 (7)
Andrew: 988. Mistake in working.
RR: 990. (25 x 4 - 1) x 10 (10)
Score: 13–14 (max 26)

Image

Those who know split multiplication will be very unimpressed.

Teatime teaser: SLAPHATS -> ASPHALTS

Round 4: D T G S O E O G W

Zac: STOOGED (7)
Andrew: GOOSED (6)
OT: STOGGED (7)
Score: 20–14 (max 33)

GOOSE as a verb means to poke someone's bum. Hehe. STOG is an American word meaning to be bogged down...

Image

Round 5: T N Y T A U I E D

Zac: TAUNTED (7)
Andrew: TAUNTED (7)
DC: TAINTED (7)
OT: ATTUNED (7) DITTANY (7) TENUITY (7)
Score: 27–21 (max 40)

***FLATTER THAN A FLATFISH***

Round 6: 25, 7, 1, 5, 3, 8. Target: 562.

Zac: 562. Mistake in working.
Andrew: -
RR: 562. ((25 x 7 - 1) x 3) + (8 x 5) (10)
Score: 27–21 (max 50)

Harder than it looks, but surprisingly Rachel doesn't rectify Zac's aborted attempt that starts with 25 x 8 x 3 (she could've gone (25 x 8 - 1)*3 - 7*5) and takes until after DC's spot to solve it.

Round 7: X N T B O U A E F

Zac: ABOUT (5)
Andrew: BOAT (4)
DC: BUTANE (6)
Score: 32–21 (max 56)

Image

Round 8: R N S G U I A S I

Zac: GRAINS (6)
Andrew: ASSURING (8)
OT: ARISINGS (8)
Score: 32–29 (max 64)

A good 8 spot puts Andrew back in contention.

Round 9: 75, 7, 5, 10, 2, 6. Target: 661.

Zac: 660. ((7 + 2) x 75) - 10 - 5 (7)
Andrew: -
RR: 661. ((10 - 6 + 5) x 75) - (7 x 2) (10)
Score: 39–29 (max 74)

Andrew's numbers kinda suck, but Zac hasn't maxed a numbs round yet this game either.

Teatime teaser: SNAGSNOW -> SWANSONG

Round 10: M V C H E O I R A

Zac: armcover
Andrew: CHROME (6)
DC: CHIMERA (7)
OT: ARCHIVE (7)
Score: 39–35 (max 81)

A decent attempt is fruitless both because it's not in ODO and because it has an extra R. Andrew's just 4 points behind now...

Round 11: M R N S E I E O B

Zac: bromines
Andrew: MINERS (6)
DC: ENROBES (7)
OT: EMERSION (8)
Score: 39–41 (max 89)

And now takes the lead - in Nick's words, "not through any great effort of his own". Harsh but fair.

Image

Round 12: R N T L A O E I S

Zac: SALIENT (7)
Andrew: RELATIONS (18)
DC: ORIENTALS (18)
OT: TENSORIAL (18)
Score: 39–59 (max 107)

How the tables have turned! But let's face it - if you can't spot RELATIONS, you probably shouldn't be an octochamp.

Round 13: K P F D E A U P I

Zac: KIPPED (6)
Andrew: PEAK (4)
OT: FAPPED (6)
Score: 45–59 (max 113)

Surprisingly DC does not mention the SALTAY!! alternate 6.

Round 14: 50, 7, 2, 6, 4, 5. Target: 141.

Zac: 141. 50 x 6/2 - 5 - 4 (10)
Andrew: 141. (50 x 2) + (6 x 7) - (5 - 4) (10)
Score: 55–69 (max 123)

Andrew has sealed the win...

Image

Round 15: R O U G H N I N O

Andrew buzzes on 7 seconds to say HONOURING which is correct.
Final Score: 55–79 (max 133)

Bit of a weird game, that. Very competitive, but mostly due to mistakes instead of raw skill. Anyway my hands hurt so I'm going to go out now, BYE.

Pretty sure the subtitles said MINORS. Although I agree that he almost certainly said/meant MINERS. Just thought that was a fascinating footnote to add.

Loved the juxtaposition of Nick dissing the challenger's skill with a big 'fuck you' nine in the very next round as well.
