I think the premise is that Russia won the space race to land on the Moon.
I do like alt history.
Also if we are talking quality over quantity then Apple TV leads the way

Yeah that's the one, and yeah everything I've watched on there has been quality, but yeah they don't have the volumes that Netflix has

Some brilliant misdirection and a great payoff

Just watched Rain Man and, like me, Charlie Babbitt seems to be a game show fanatic.

Matilda the Musical Film. I love Tim Minchin but wasn't sure his Matilda musical would be my thing so a film version was perfect for me. Emma Thompson is superb as Miss Trunchbull; I really wasn't expecting the film to be so damn funny but I laughed very hard so many times when she was on screen.

Interesting, I thought Lashana Lynch was excellent as Miss Honey but did think that her singing style didn't quite suit the songs where Miss Honey took the lead (her singing was very good, this isn't a question of quality, just a different style), with the exception of the closing number which was written especially for the film so might have been composed with her in mind as the performer.

So if you enjoyed the movie version of My House, you'll probably like the Stageplay soundtrack version more, and personally I love Tim Minchin's version performed at some awards show.

Similar with When I Grow Up, the imagery was cool in the film but I don't feel like the song hit too hard, whereas it's the centrepiece of the musical soundtrack, and Tim Minchin's version of it is brilliant too.

Anatomy of a murder. A nice courtroom drama, although very much of its time too. A good contrast to the modern proliferation of such stuff.

Was hoping to catch a few more movies over Christmas but only got around to three I hadn't seen before.

Mullholland Drive. Not as good as Blue Velvet but David Lynch is certainly something.

Glass Onion. Brilliant. Like Knives Out it once again makes the case for a best Ensemble Cast Oscar. Daniel Craig is especially good.

Red Rocket. Another hit for Sean Baker who is fast becoming one of my favourite directors.

All Quiet on the Western Front (2022)
Brutal film about the first World War but probably the best WWI film I've ever seen.
It really does spell out the futility of war (17million people died for).
It also highlighted the fact that there were French soldiers who fought too, considering most WWI films usually show Germans v British.
The opening scene was fantastic and book ended the last scene.
The graphic violence was almost too brutal and one particular scene in a quarry will probably stay with me until I die.
If you have the stomach for it, then watch it.
Probably best film of 2022 and it has certainly earned its 14 BAFTAs

Knock at the Cabin.
Pleasantly surprised.
Lately M Night Shayalaman has had great ideas with poor scripts.
Happening, Glass, Split and Old, but this one is from a book and is well written and you will just have to find out,at the end, what, if any, the rug pull is.
Watch it before it's spoiled

I watched Schindler's List for the first time recently. I'd recommend it.

I also watched Ghostbusters II for not the first time. Good film.

Great though Schindlers List is, Like The Pianist and more recently All Quiet on The Western Front, once is enough.
Ghostbusters 2 once is enough for a different reason.
Probably the most over rated film franchise out there

Bladerunner 2049 is MUCH better at the cinema.

How to Blow Up a Pipeline
Essentially a film about Eco-terrorism which goes against my natural feelings about protests.
This film plays like a thriller and it is a times edge of the seat stuff
It uses the Reservoir Dogs playbook of character back story flashbacks.
This is a really good thriller except its not a heist movie but plays like one, though interestingly there is no whiteboard scene.
Probably one of the better US made thrillers I've seen in years.
With a couple of nice twists.
I do hope Stop Oil protesters don't watch this though

Oppenheimer.
Yes, believe the hype, this is really a superbly well crafted biopic and don't think just because it's a Nolan film it's not for you.
This uses some of the best tricks of Kubrick, Lynch and Wells.
A film that is a horror story effectively.
There are still some of Nolans tricks, like the poignancy of the first scene, returning to other scenes with a changed perspective and obviously huge practical effects.
If you go to the cinema once this year see this not Barbie
Though I have seen both, Barbie can wait for the DVD or VOD

I watched Event Horizon last night. One of the most ridiculous films I've ever seen.

Also recently watched When Harry Met Sally and Memento. Both better films. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider was pretty bad.

Event Horizon had a crazy as fuck twist but like a lot of films with such twists I have no desire to rewatch.
Memento is great, I even watched it in chronological order once.

Event Horizon has a twist? It just gets ever more bizzare and incoherent in a fairly progressive manner - I'm not sure I could pinpoint any specific twist.

Not so much a twist as a complete genre change from Sci Fi to Horror

I watched Brief Encounter yesterday. And for what is supposed to be a classic film, I thought it was pretty awful. I thought it started off fairly promisingly. There were some amusing moments with the peripheral characters, but this all went away when the main story took off. Ultimately it was nothing more than a pathetic love story between two pathetic and miserable people with no substance whatsoever. It's quite self-indulgent and it's hard to really root for the main woman because she's so weak and pathetic. And for what is actually quite a short film it still manages to drag.

Plus the guy in it is a doctor of preventative medicine and he's going on about lung disease caused by inhaling dust from mining etc. The geezer smokes.

I've seen the third film in the series which was about aliens, so I'm not sure what happens in the second one to bridge the gap between the first and third films.

Jackass 4.5. Will it ever not be funny?

Watched Rambo III the other day, again late night telly. Amused at an American film with the Afghans as the goodies. Predictable bollocks, but Stallone excels in running towards the camera as something explodes in the middle distance behind him.

They Cloned Tyrone on Netflix is pretty good.

Where do you guys stand on watching films in parts? Often I'll watch a film on the iPlayer or C4 online and I'll watch maybe an hour and watch the rest later or the next day. I have a couple of friends who think this is the most egregious thing ever. I say they're wrong. What difference does it make anyway? It's much easier to watch a film if you don't need a guaranteed 2-hour free time slot, sometimes longer.

Some films would lose some of its impact if you paused it, like an Indians Jones Film or a Star Wars films.
Some shows on Netflix play out like a 6 hour film like for example The Queens Gambit

What film? Films. Most films I watch. Just pausing The Godfather to go to bed.

I think a sprawling Epic like The Godfather is perfect to watch in bite size chunks abd if I remember correctly the Godfather trilogy has been shown in episodic form.on tv before.
Edit: In 1977 there was a 3 part tv series called The Godfather Saga I think in 2 hour chunks of the first 2 Godfather films

I watched Captain Phillips last night. They must have cut out the bit where the Tom Hanks character gets stuck on an uninhabited island for a large section of the film.

Really enjoyed this, Killer Smiths Soundtrack.
Lots of references to 70s TV shows.
Internal monologue is right up my street.
Michael Fassbender is great in this, barely a dozen words of actual dialogue let he is in every scene.
Not a heavy plot driven film but it works

The Expendables. Somewhat ridiculous, but fun. First time I'd seen Jason Statham in anything too. Seemed up to the rigours of the role.

Also, Terminator Dark Fate. Same as the others really, but I quite enjoyed it anyway.

This explores texting dating and preconceived ideas.

Watched the Michael Flatley movie Blackbird. Was hoping it would be a so bad it's good kind of movie but it was just bad. The opening few scenes raise a chuckle because they're chock full of cliché and there's a hilarious hat switch moment but other then that, it was dull as ditch water.

Michael Flatley as a secret agent, IMDB rating 2.7.
Id have to have been forcefed some ketamine to watch that one

I was away on holidays with a group of lads and we thought it would be a laugh to check it out but it wasn't. 2.7 is generous.

Just watched Leave The World Behind on Netflix.
Very enjoyable., also divisive, my stepdaughter didn't like the ending it but myself and my partner did.
I think it's because I have spent a greater part of my life, in the pre-nternet age.

Poor things.
If you can get over the basic premise (I suggest you Google it) Its a very well made film.
Its basically a feminist film in a steam punk victorian world about sexual awakening (warning there is a lot of sex in this though not titillating) and control.
If you have seen Yorgos previous films you will no that the weirdness is dialled up to eleven but it's hilarious and Emma Stone is a tour de force and deserves an Oscar

Rambo: Last Blood. Some of the most over-the-top gore and violence I've seen outside the horror genre. Almost made the film worthwhile!

Killing of a Sacred Dear. Was OK. Definitely picks up as it goes although the dialogue choices are a bit strange. I wonder if they filmed multiple endings.

Blood Simple. Enjoyed it. Not my favourite Cohen brothers flick but still good.

No Hard Feelings. Throwaway but enjoyable enough.

Rewatched some old favourites too.

Adjustment Bureau. More of a RomDram than a RomCom but I really like it. Gotta love Emily Blunt.

RED. Underrated action comedy. Cast is great across the board.

I watched The Lavender Hill Mob the other day. Quite enjoyable.

Watched about 10 films at the cinema already this year.
Stand outs are American Fiction. Yes Americans really can do satire, really funny.
The Zone of Interest, probably told more about the horrors of Nazi concentration camps than Schindlers List.everyone should see it but I think only once
Argylle, far better than it has any right yo be.
Critics hated it but I loved it.
Probably helps I adore Bryce Dallas Howard, especially when she managed to morth into a kick ass Claire from Steps.
Really good soundtrack and visuals.
All of Us Strangers, really good adaptation of a Japanese novel, superb acting all round

Poor Things was absolutely batshit. Loved it. Very funny.

Off to see Argylle tomorrow.

Argylle was rubbish. Can't remember seeing a worse film. Massively disappointing. Couple of decent tunes in the soundtrack. Cat was momentarily cute. Otherwise shite.

Well not necessarily just film and actor but Oscars clump together in a suspicious manner.

One of the few subjects I can profess to be something of an xxpert on is the Oscars.
There have only been a handful of films to win the big four.
I do take your point that best picture winners tend to win multiple awards but that's understandable.
The Last Time best film and Actor was from the same film was The Artist, very over rated film imho
