CoNut then, at Leazes parkrun:

52 (1). Dan Byrom - 23:28 (54.97%) (667 points)
164 (2). Fiona Titcombe - 30:40 (58.26%) (333 points)

And the table:

1. Thomas Carey - 3257
2. Dan Byrom - 2410
3. Fiona Titcombe - 1490
4. Mike Springett - 1214
5. David Hilton - 971
6. Gevin Chapwell - 929
7. Bradley Horrocks - 786
8. Matt Gould - 600
=. Jonathan Wynn - 600
10. Callum Todd - 500
11. Dinos Sfyris - 429
12. Stephen Read - 400
13. Adam Latchford - 286
14. Chris Marshall - 271
15. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
16. Adam Dexter - 143

This gives a total of 14,500 points from 29 scores, averaging 500.

The only change is that Fiona jumps from 4th to 3rd. Also David Hilton was in the wrong position on the last list. He should be 5th not 9th, but his points were right.

I see that that Fiona Titcombe and Stephen Read did Edgbaston Reservoir yesterday, presumably before CO:Brum. Did anyone else?

Nope - just the two of us. Other people scuppered by trains and soft beds. It was pretty grim weather-wise!

I still need to do the points for this. And then we had CO:LON, so I need to sort that out too.

OK, so Edgbaston Reservoir parkrun:

53 (1). Stephen Read - 25:11 (53.01%) (667 points)
100 (2). Fiona Titcombe - 29:14 (61.12%) (333 points)

And the table:

1. Thomas Carey - 3257
2. Dan Byrom - 2410
3. Fiona Titcombe - 1823
4. Mike Springett - 1214
5. Stephen Read - 1067
6. David Hilton - 971
7. Gevin Chapwell - 929

13. Adam Latchford - 286
14. Chris Marshall - 271
15. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
16. Adam Dexter - 143

This gives a total of 15,500 points from 31 scoring events, averaging 500.

Fiona stays in 3rd, whereas Stephen leapfrogs up to 5th from 12th.

Before CO:LON, Dan Byrom and Thomas Carey did different parkruns, and under official rules, these count as separate events and they both just get 500 points.

Gladstone parkrun:

9 (1). Thomas Carey - 21:17 (60.61%) (500 points)

Sunny Hill parkrun:

13 (1). Dan Byrom - 25:32 (50.52%) (500 points)

And the table:

1. Thomas Carey - 3757
2. Dan Byrom - 2910
3. Fiona Titcombe - 1823
4. Mike Springett - 1214
5. Stephen Read - 1067
6. David Hilton - 971
7. Gevin Chapwell - 929
8. Bradley Horrocks - 786
9. Matt Gould - 600
=. Jonathan Wynn - 600
11. Callum Todd - 500
12. Dinos Sfyris - 429
13. Adam Latchford - 286
14. Chris Marshall - 271
15. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
16. Adam Dexter - 143

This gives a total of 16,500 points from 33 scoring events, averaging 500.

Tom and Dan were 1st and 2nd anyway so nothing changes.

OK, so Blackpool on 16th September:

13 (1). Thomas Carey - 22:01 (58.59%) (800 points)
63 (2). Callum Todd - 26:34 (48.56%) (600 points)
98 (3). Stephen Read - 29:42 (44.95%) (400 points)
120 (4). Fiona Titcombe - 31:49 (56.16%) (200 points)

And the table:

1. Thomas Carey - 4557
2. Dan Byrom - 2910
3. Fiona Titcombe - 2023
4. Stephen Read - 1467
5. Mike Springett - 1214
6. Callum Todd - 1100
7. David Hilton - 971
8. Gevin Chapwell - 929
9. Bradley Horrocks - 786
10. Matt Gould - 600

12. Dinos Sfyris - 429
13. Adam Latchford - 286
14. Chris Marshall - 271
15. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
16. Adam Dexter - 143

This gives a total of 18,500 from 37 scores, averaging 500.

Tom extends his lead at the top, Fiona stays 3rd, Stephen climbs 1 place to 5th and Callum climbs 5 places to 6th.

I was the only parkrunner before CO:Braintree on 4th November, at the Great Notley parkrun.

3 (1). Gevin Chapwell - 21:48 (65.06%) (500 points)

And the table:

1. Thomas Carey - 4557
2. Dan Byrom - 2910
3. Fiona Titcombe - 2023
4. Stephen Read - 1467
5. Gevin Chapwell - 1429
6. Mike Springett - 1214
7. Callum Todd - 1100
8. David Hilton - 971
9. Bradley Horrocks - 786
10. Matt Gould - 600
=. Jonathan Wynn - 600
12. Dinos Sfyris - 429
13. Adam Latchford - 286
14. Chris Marshall - 271
15. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
16. Adam Dexter - 143

This gives a total of 19,000 points from 38 scores, averaging 500.

I jump from 8th to 5th. With just one event left now and only scores lower than 1000 possible, Thomas Carey is guaranteed to be champion. (Although maybe we should do a winner-takes-all from the top 8 at the last event, like at FOCAL!)

A bit late but Milton Keynes saw the final round of the 2023 CO:parkrun championship. So let's see what happened at Linford Wood parkrun:

4 (1). Gevin Chapwell - 19:49 (71.57%) (909 points)
20 (2). Thomas Carey - 23:25 (55.09%) (818 points)
28 (3). Jonathan Wynn - 24:08 (55.32%) (727 points)
40 (4). Bradley Horrocks - 24:56 (51.74%) (636 points)
44. (5). Dan Byrom - 25:06 (51.39%) (545 points)
52 (6). Callum Todd - 25:31 (50.56%) (455 points)
95 (7). Dave Ryan - 29:00 (53.91%) (364 points)
122 (8). Suzy Turner - 30:33 (57.01%) (273 points)
132 (9). Fiona Titcombe - 31:17 (57.11%) (182 points)
185 (10). Chris Marshall - 37:22 (36.80%) (91 points)

As you may be aware, Thomas Carey was awarded the prize for being champion at Milton Keynes before this table was calculated. Let's see if it stacks up...

1. Thomas Carey - 5375
2. Dan Byrom - 3455
3. Gevin Chapwell - 2338
4. Fiona Titcombe - 2205
5. Callum Todd - 1555
6. Stephen Read - 1467
7. Bradley Horrocks - 1422
8. Jonathan Wynn - 1327
9. Mike Springett - 1214
10. David Hilton - 971
11. Matt Gould - 600
12. Dinos Sfyris - 429
13. Dave Ryan - 364
14. Chris Marshall - 362
15. Adam Latchford - 286
16. Suzy Turner - 273
17. Eeshan Malhotra - 214
18. Adam Dexter - 143

This gives a total of 24,000 from 48 scores, averaging 500. So Thomas Carey is indeed the champion! (Actually, this was known beforehand because his lead was unassailable.) Luckily for him we don't do a top 8 shoot-out!

We have a new season on our hands. And before COLIN, a load of us went to the relatively new Yarborough Leisure Centre parkrun (something about collecting parkruns beginning with every letter of the alphabet), and here are the results:

6 (1). Gevin Chapwell - 18:59 (75.24%) (889 points)
27 (2). Dan Byrom - 20:57 (61.58%) (778 points)
48 (3). Thomas Carey - 22:32 (57.25%) (667 points)
73 (4). David Hilton - 23:48 (56.09%) (556 points)
79 (5). Callum Todd - 24:31 (52.62%) (444 points)
137 (6). Bradley Horrocks - 28:44 (44.90%) (333 points)
141. (7). Fiona Titcombe - 28:55 (61.79%) (222 points)
192 (8). Chris Marshall - 34:58 (39.32%) (111 points)

So the points table is just the above. 4000 points from 8 scores, averaging 500.

After nearly a year, I've finally updated the PB list. As well as a new entry from Matt Gould, there were improvements from Matthew Tassier, Junaid Mubeen, Jonathan Wynn, Dan Byrom, Stephen Read, Kai Laddiman and Adam Latchford. Adam Latchford improved from 29:29 to 20:35 - nearly 9 minutes! He was 54th. He is now 19th.

Sadly won't ever happen. Parkrun have removed all the course records from the website.

It seems there's a vocal group on twitter who are objecting that female course records could be held by trans women. Really WGAS - it's parkrun, not the friggin' olympics. (FB comments suggest there actually may be one record at one parkrun that falls into this category - hardly an endemic problem!) Sad times.

I think the best solution is to change "gender" to "sex" on the sign-up and leave people to it. They don't demand proof of age.

It's very sad indeed, and I feel very sorry for any trans people who are caught up in this. Parkrun isn't a race or a competition, and I've always loved that it's inclusive. Having said that, if I was elite, I'd probably be pissed off if my record did get taken by a trans woman. But I imagine those cases are extremely rare and this feels like a sledgehammer approach. I hadn't realised till yesterday that this was an issue at all. I remember this story a few years back https://blog.parkrun.com/uk/2020/02/12/ ... s-welcome/ - one of the things she felt relief over is how easy it was to change your gender on your profile. It's so sad that people who are already facing huge challenges around acceptance now have this furore round something I've always seen as inclusive and welcoming, whoever you are. Not sure there is an easy answer (especially if some cis men, as twatter claims, are changing their gender on their parkrun profiles just to get the records - really is this true? - and what's to stop me registering as 85 for the same reason?) A lot of people get a lot of pleasure from the records, and it's always exciting when a course record gets broken. Such a shame.

Edit https://support.parkrun.com/hc/en-us/ar ... 137-Gender - parkrun's position on gender (prior to the latest stuff) which seems pretty reasonable. I guess a trans athlete who was breaking records could request for their performances to be excluded from the records. Everyone happy.

Well, here's the relevant bit from their webpage:
After careful consideration and extensive consultation–both in 2019 and in 2023, we decided to continue categorising people based on gender rather than sex. We feel this is aligned with us as a health and wellbeing charity that provides non-competitive socially-focussed physical activity, and allows people to identify in the way they feel most appropriate and comfortable.

In order to ensure that those who do not identify with the gender binary are not excluded from parkrun, in 2019, we decided to expand the range of options that a person could choose from.

In all countries we operate in, parkrunners can record their gender as male or female, or alternatively they are free to keep that information private by selecting “prefer not to say”.

Further, in the majority of parkrun countries we also offer a fourth option of “another gender identity”. Note: We have a duty of care to our communities and volunteers, and as such in a small number of countries this option is not available for legal, cultural and/or safeguarding reasons.
I would, however, do it differently. parkrun is supposed to be inclusive and as much as possible apolitical. They should also not be asking for more information than they need. The reason for asking for someone's sex is purely for results separation and age-graded scores*. If they weren't doing that, they should probably not ask at all. That's why they shouldn't be asking for someone's self-identified gender. They simply do not need to know.

What they could do is have the sex question at the end with a qualifier. So something like "If you want to receive age-graded scores along with your times, you will need to select your sex as male or female. Otherwise you can leave blank or select "other" or "prefer not to say"."

*They call them age-graded scores, but really it's age and sex.

Do they even check IDs? Is there anything to prevent me registering as a 100 year old woman? Or using the barcode of an actual 100 year old woman? Are they concerned that there are people with age-related scores greater than 100%?

FWIW I did my third ever parkrun yesterday. If anyone's considering Crosby parkrun for CoLiv it's very scenic. You can see Snowdon on a clear day and you start by running out to one of Antony Gormley's iron men statues and back. But that does mean it's partly on the beach, and the whole course is very exposed.

Good stuff - a very impressive time too! Course sounds lovely. I'm committed to Birkenhead as that's where I'm staying but will look it up next time I'm in the vicinity.

There's no checks and the results often have errors. My PB for a long time was recorded 13 seconds faster than it was - I think the results were one place out. I contacted the event organisers but they didn't correct it. There's people pulled by dogs, people missing laps (used to happen a lot at Sandurst till they changed the order of the course) and all sorts of other errors. The trans row misses the point that it really isn't a race, but the stats are of interest to a lot of people and some of the stuff that's been removed (attendance records for example) makes no sense. I really don't see how the stats are off-putting to newcomers - I think the name parkrun is probably more of a barrier to the "I can't run 5K people". But for the vast majority of us, it makes no difference to our Saturday run - I was at Bushy on Saturday (the largest parkrun event) and only overheard one conversation about it.

At my parkrun the JW10 record (so girls 10 and under) was at one point held by a 40-ish-year-old man who used the wrong barcode. I suspect deliberately because he did the same at another local parkrun. There's also something a bit off about this guy in general.

I did contact the event director (and pointed him to the photo evidence) but he didn't do anything about it. He didn't explicitly refuse but didn't act on it either.

Change of heart - unless the weather is really grim, I'm going to try and get to Crosby - it looks lovely! If you're there, look out for me (orange parkrun Frimley Lodge t-shirt) and say hello :)
I normally watch the parkrunners go by while I'm having my breakfast, but I'm walking in Wales tomorrow so I'll probably be gone. Enjoy.

It was fabulous - weather was perfect - one of my favourite parkruns I've done and very glad I made the extra effort, so thanks for the recommendation!

I think I was the only co:eventer running in Liverpool, but Stephen did his home run in Warrington before the event so probably counts towards the gev table!

By the way, I've added Tom Rowell to the PB list, with his time of 35:37, but I haven't gone through all the times to check for new PBs, so I won't quote the whole list again.

you're due to have some people for the corug park run that won't be playing in the event but are very much affiliated with countdown (rachael montgomery melody coupe and maybe adam beach) so assume you're counting these guys?

They would have to at least be at the event in some capacity to get points, even if they're not playing. Otherwise anyone doing a parkrun that weekend would have to count. There's no official parkrun for a CO-event. You can do any parkrun and attend.

Edit - I can add them to the PB list though.

Stephen, Maus, Dan, Melody Coupe, Dave Robjohns, Rachael Montgomery, Adam Beach and I did hilly muddy Rugby. (Adam and Rachael were doing the computer and conundrums and other general event stuff rather than playing the event - the rest of us played). Jonathan Wynn and David Hilton did Warwick. Dave, Rachael and Adam's first ever parkrun! Lovely jubbly!

24 (2). Thomas Carey - 24:22 (52.94%) (778 points)
51 (3). Stephen Read - 27:00 (49.44%) (667 points)
80 (4). Dave Robjohns - 29:25 (43.85%) (556 points)
90 (5). Fiona Titcombe - 31:11 (58.04%) (444 points)
116 (6). Rachael Montgomery - 36:43 (40.35%) (333 points)
136 (7). Adam Beach - 41:47 (30.87%) (222 points)
137 (8). Melody Coupe - 41:48 (35.45%) (111 points)

Warwickshire Racecourse:

47 (1). David Hilton - 23:23 (57.09%) (667 points)
60 (2). Jonathan Wynn - 24:00 (55.63%) (333 points)

And the table:

1. Dan Byrom - 1667
2. Thomas Carey - 1445
3. David Hilton - 1223
4. Stephen Read - 1167
5. Fiona Titcombe - 1166
6. Gevin Chapwell - 889
7. Dave Robjohns - 556
8. Callum Todd - 444
9. Bradley Horrocks -333
=. Rachael Montgomery - 333
=. Jonathan Wynn - 333
12. Adam Beach - 222
13. Chris Marshall - 111
=. Melody Coupe - 111

10,000 points from 20 scores, averaging 500.

I will need to add some of these people to the PB list as well - Dave Robjohns, Rachael Montgomery, Adam Beach and Melody Coupe.

Probably a bit late to tell you now but when my uncle Walter did the London Marathon we made sure to record the whole thing on the TV so the next day we could spend 4 hours playing Where's Wally

Excellent stuff :) Having failed dismally to get to the Cutty Sark to see my daughter, we realised the Gev-pace athletes were passing us, checked the app and realised he must be close, so gave him a shout around 18 miles in :) Managed to see my daughter at 15 miles, then again just before the end so all good. She finished smiling, so a successful day's marathoning, though I swear spectating as just as knackering as running the thing!
