Countdown recap for Tuesday 14 April 2015.

Image

It's Tuesday which means I'm on recap duty once again, so welcome to todays recap. Gerry Tynan has looked impressive so far and will want to pick up as many points as possible to climb the table in this tough series. How will he do today

C1: Champion Gerry Tynan (5 wins, 537 points.) An apterite and accountant from Lucan. Also his daughter Sarah's 10th birthday today, so Happy Birthday Sarah.
C2: Challenger Nella Mathieson. A retired physiotherapist from Little Addlington near Kettering, who once lived in Houston while her husband worked on the oil rigs with the "southern dudes."
DC: Susie Dent and Janet Street-Porter.
RR: Rachel Riley.
OT: Other words or solutions.

R01: C B U A P G U O N

R07: C T D I R E A N E

Enjoy the show.

Round 1: C B U A P G U O N

Gerry: GUANO (5)
Nella: BANG (4)
DC: CAPON (5)
OT: BACON (5) BANCO (5) BOGAN (5) BUNCO (5) CONGA (5) PONGA (5) PUNGA (5) UNCAP (5)
Score: 5–0 (max 5)

A difficult looking selection to start but plenty of 5's available and Gerry gets one of them to start the day off. Nella originally declared 5 but corrected herself in time.

GUANO is the excretment of sea birds and bats. LOVELY

Round 2: S H T A O A I D S

Gerry: TOADISH (7)
Nella: HOSTAS (6)
OT: SHAADIS (7)
Score: 12–0 (max 12)

Excellent spot from Gerry to extend his lead. My subtitles on 4od/My4/All4/whatever it's called now said Nella declared HOSTIRS but I'm guessing HOSTAS was her actual spot.

Round 3: 10, 1, 8, 10, 3, 100. Target: 978.

Gerry: 978. (100-3)*10+8 (10)
Nella: 978. 100*10-(8+10+3+1) (10)
Score: 22–10 (max 22)

Following on from yesterday, yet another easy numbers game but at least it gets Nella on the scoreboard.

Teatime teaser: WEEKSPAN -> NEWSPEAK

Round 4: N S B A I E R T U

Gerry: URBANITES (18)
Nella: URBANISE (8)
DC: BANISTER (8) TRIBUNES (8)
Score: 40–10 (max 40)

I don't know if Gerry was fishing for U but either way it's a fantastic spot and gives him a 30 point lead. Also our first Darren of the day!

Round 5: S F O A N Y L E M

Gerry: FLAMES (6)
Nella: MEANLY (6)
DC: FELONY (6) LEMONS (6)
OT: AMYLOSE (7) FLAMENS (7) SALMONY (7)
Score: 46–16 (max 47)

AMYLOSE is the crystallizable form of starch, consisting of long unbranched polysaccharide chains.

Nella gets her first letters points of the day but the entire studio misses a smattering of 7s

Round 6: 2, 1, 2, 6, 50, 75. Target: 584.

Gerry: 584. (75-2)*(6+2) (10)
Nella: -
Score: 56–16 (max 57)

Simple trick here extends Gerry's lead to 40 points. It's going to be hard for Nella to come back from this in the second half.

JSP gives some tips of people "of Nick's age" to live in the present and look forward.

Round 7: C T D I R E A N E

Gerry: RETAINED (8)
Nella: CREATED (7)
DC: DECANTER (8) CREATINE (8)
OT: CANTERED (8) CRENATED (8) DERACINE (8) DETAINER (8) DICENTRA (8) INCREATE (8) RECANTED (8)
Score: 64–16 (max 65)

(For non musicians, I am emphasising this is a very flat round)

Round 8: L M S O E A N W O

Gerry: MELONS (6)
Nella: SOLEMN (6)
DC: LEMONS (6)
RR: losewoman
OT: WOOLMAN (7) WOOLMEN (7)
Score: 70–22 (max 72)

Nella is SOLEMN with her answer but it gets her more points on the board. Rachel gets creative and nearly spells out JSP's other show, but a pair of 7s were available.

Round 9: 3, 8, 9, 7, 10, 25. Target: 130.

Gerry: 130. (25-9-3)*10 (10)
Nella: 132.
Score: 80–22 (max 82)

Once again Nella misses a simple trick and it's 10 more points for Gerry.

Teatime teaser: LESCAMPI -> MISPLACE

Round 10: D R V I A E N R A

Gerry: ARRIVED (7)
Nella: ARRIVED (7)
DC: RAVINED (7) VERANDA (7)
OT: ARANEID (7) DRAINER (7) INVADER (7) RANDIER (7)
Score: 87–29 (max 89)

Another flat round
Image

Round 11: K Z Q E O I M G U
Image
Gerry: QUIZ (4)
Nella: QUIZ (4)
DC: MIKE (4)
OT: GIZMO (5)
Score: 91–33 (max 94)

Horrible selection in this QUIZ but hiding in there was today's second Darren (or is it Darron?)
Image

Round 12: M W T E I U G T E

Gerry: TWEET (5)
Nella: MITE (4)
OT: WETTIE (6)
Score: 96–33 (max 100)

I wonder if anyone will send a TWEET informing us of today's third Darren, again missed by the studio
Image
OoW: Susie talks about the origin of the term 'carte blanche' as giving someone complete freedom of action.

Round 13: F R O V E T O L H

Gerry: HOOVER (6)
Nella: LOOTER (6)
DC: HOOTER (6) FOOTER (6)
OT: FLORET (6) FOETOR (6) FOOTLE (6) HOOFER (6) LOFTER (6) RETOOL (6) REVOLT (6) ROOTLE (6) THROVE (6) TOOLER (6)
Score: 102–39 (max 106)

That round fell like Forest's promotion bid. FLAT! I've run out of gifs/similes/whatever.

Round 14: 1, 6, 2, 5, 25, 100. Target: 859.

Gerry: 864. (100+5)*(6+2)+25-1 (7)
Nella: -
OT: (25*6+2)*5+100-1 (10)
Score: 109–39 (max 116)

Nella declares "I can't do this on TV, obviously" but it was a difficult one. Gerry gets 7 more points and Rachel needs another look. Has she gone rusty from all the easy games recently?

Round 15: I G R I N A L O T

Gerry buzzes on 3 seconds to say TAILORING which is correct.
Final Score: 119–39 (max 126)

Nella was never really in today's but she clearly enjoyed her trip to Salford and seems happy enough with her goody bag. As for Gerry he is now on 6 wins and will be at finishing off the job in the next two days. If you think you've seen the last of me for this week, think again, as I will be recapping once again tomorrow as Robbo is on holiday, and this makes up for me missing the recap on two weeks ago. So I shall see you all tomorrow.

Ciao!
